I've gotten v4 up and running on two computers, thanks to the assistance from this thread. I had a prior problem though, that I hoped the new install would fix, which it hasn't. Previously I had installed Docreader & Editpad, but uninstalled them the usual way. What I discovered is that Palm Desktop still looks for their integration pieces and gives me an error message for each program, telling me that the .exe file for each is not available. All I have to do is click "ok" and everything is off and running, but I'd like to eliminate having to dismiss the error message if I can. I've tried looking for "obvious" solutions, but haven't found anything.

Does anyone know how to disconnect Palm Desktop from these uninstalled integrations?

    Thanks!

Does anyone have the problem of alarm not working when the Palm Desktop 4 is closed, even when I set it to work otherwise? I installed it over the Handspring Desktop 3.01, then I have this problem.

When I uninstalled everything, and installed only the Palm Desktop 4, the problem went away.

    Question for people using 4.0:

Does Palm Desktop 4.0 allow easy _entry_ and _modification_ of Todos while looking at the Calendar/Event screen? I notice (from the screenshots) that it allows you to look at Todo's from the Event screen, but can you modify those Todos and add new ones?

I find the Visor's Datebk3 screen very useful because the Event/Todo functions are combined (and found Desktop 3.0 useless because they aren't).

Given all the problems people have had with installing I'm hesitant to install it just to answer this question. Your reports would be very helpful to me.

    Thanks,

    Stoph

I tried, but I couldn't do it. If you double click on a ToDo to edit it (at the DateBook screen), it'll jump to the full ToDo screen. And a right click over a ToDo doesn't work, either.
But when you edit a ToDo it will display a 1 month calendar, so it may help (if calendars are what you need to judge when to put a date in a ToDo, etc.).

[My original message didn't mention the calendar thing in the ToDo, sorry]

I just downloaded the palm desktop 4-eng and failed to install it. I got a message reading that my hotsync manager does not support this upgrade.

what am I doing wrong here? Anyone have this problem?

    See here for some background.

What you can do is rename your HotSync.exe file before running the setup for Desktop 4.0. You'll probably want to exit the HotSync manager first before renaming.

The memo pad edits have the usual "OK" button that we're all use to.

    Just wondering.
I believe that the first post in this thread is still the best way to install Desktop 4.
I, too, had the problem mentioned above with the "&" before the "OK" on all edit buttons except for Memo.
I think I tracked it down to the file cmds21.dll.
It seems to work with the Desktop 3.01 version (not the 3.1 or 4.0).
    Anybody else run into this?

Yep, I have. And I'm using a Spanish Windows...
    It's a shame.
Oh, and something else: Has anyone noticed this? In Address, you can't have multi line fields (except for the address itself). So if you want to type 2 different phone numbers, say, in Work, you must type one following the other... It doesn't accept a Return press. But if you later on edit it in your Visor, it works!
    Am I making myself clear?

Try hitting "shift" + enter, and see if that works. That might solve you're problem.

I had the same restarting problem with Win2K, I fixed it by uninstalling the Handspring Visor device using the Add/Remove Hardware icon in the control panel.

After clicking on Add/Remove Hardware, click Next.

Select Uninstall/Unplug a device, click Next.

Select Uninstall a device, click Next.

Click Show Hidden devices, and select Handspring Visor from the list.

The next time you hot-sync it will reinstall the Handspring driver.

    This worked for me.

    Ah very cool:

The version of Palm Desktop 4 that comes with the m500 will hotsync with a Visor out-of-the-box, with no tweaks necessary.

I'd had fears that Palm would use a different USB sync scheme and there would be problems using USB Visors and USB Palms together. No such problem--smooth sailing with both my Prism and the m500 together.

does this mean that the newest version on their site will do that too?

    Everybody,

Palm Desktop 4.0.1 works great for the Visor handhelds, no modifications required. Just download the file from Palm, run the setup app, and it works great! I did notice my Handspring Visor device driver was re-detected, but then everything synced perfectly.

    Finally....

There was a problem reported in another thread regarding AvantGo. Evidently you cant sync a Visor to AvantGo with the 4.0.1 desktop. Has this been resolved? Perhaps with AvantGo 4 which has since been released?
  18. #58
Yes, with 4.0 it does work fine. All other conduits are working as well.
  19. #59
So Jason, you are saying that I can download 4.0.1 and run it without having to do anything special?

    <Standard disclaimer applies>

Yes, it seems to work perfectly. I have 5 3rd-party conduits installed and they all work fine. So, have fun!
