This was so awesome and easy. All I really wanted to do was to get rid of RealPlayer and that GetBC or whatever that crap was. Using this tool and the PDF on shadowmite.com, it was easy getting rid of them. Windows XP even had the Palm Treo 650 Bootloader driver built in.

Thanks to all involved. I'll experiment more now that I've got a successful attempt under my belt.

argh. ran the romtool. pulled only a few of the things that are marked as 'safe to remove' on the shadowmite document. removed the alternate language connection db files, realplayer, the tutorial, and little more. uploaded, rebooted, everything seemed fine. until i tried making a phone call. it dials, and connects - then "Spkr-phone" button disappears from the screen. and throughout, i have no audio. aaaaaaaAAAAAAAA!!!!

i ran romtool again, and upload the unmodified file directory that i kept as a backup. ran fine. no problem.

but i still have no audio any more. what the heck did i do wrong? ay-yi-yi...

all have been restored since then. but still - no audio. i poked at my prefs audio settings, and changing tones on things works and i can hear them - but when running regular apps, or the phone - no audio at all.

thankfully, my bluetooth headset *does* still work - so i can use the phone. but i sure would like my normal audio back. can't imagine what the heck caused this - everything running the romtool went just fine and uneventfully. no crashes, glitches, pauses, or anything. weird.

    ah hahahahaha!

it's not the romtool or the rom or any of the hacking. it's the bad audio jack issue. i bought a cable for my treo to hook it up to the car stereo just yesterday, and tried it out. that must have busted that lame solder joint again (it broke once before a while back). heh!

Paul, you're not the first one to be fooled by your Treo. In my case it was a bad earmic, intermittent wire in it, that made me think the jack had broken. So I got my revenge by getting an Athena plug (that's what they call the plug that goes into the bottom of a Treo) and wiring up a STANDARD 3.5mm earphone jack into it, so I can now plug in any standard earsets without using the internal 2.5mm jack at all.

Along the way...the damned Treo tried to terrrorize me again. When I went to test the earphone connections, only the left channel would play. It turns out the phone is just Too Damned Smart, it won't send out the right channel audio UNLESS the left channel circuit is already connected. Apparently it uses the presence of the left channel audio to determine whether it is using a mono/stereo/earmic connection. Duh! <G>

I opened a separate thread in this forum for my issue with Treo650. NoDint get much help. However, I'm hoping for some response in this thread.

I broke my treo 650 (unlocked GSM) and been trying to restore it with no success. It always comesuo with the bootload 0.24 error screen. I could user rom tool and 650 restore tool to upload custom rom from this forum. When I reboot, the phone is stuck at the Palmone screen and doesn't respond and my phone info in rom tool still shows the partition as NVFS, while the custom ROM has FAT32.

Any help will be appretiated. I cannot hard reset/ZOR my treo, is this required to upload custom rom?

i'm trying to use the romtool, but i am an absolute neophyte. i need detailed instructions (***** proof) like 1. turn on treo. (or not) 2. push reset button under battery cover (while holding up arrow?) 3. hold hotsync button. ...... and so on. what does the rainbow bootloader look like. i see a palm one menu but,.......
    HELP!!

News is that I made some progress but still have minor issues

-- ANY reset will take me to the bootload 0.24 screen.
-- If I hold up arrow and power button and do a reset, and release the keys once I see the PALMONE logo, the phone boots properly, I placed sim can placed calls successfully.
-- If the phone goes into a sleep mode, I cannot get it working, the screen will go blank. I will have to repeat the above steps to get it working.
-- When I uploaded custom ROM, I removed realplayer and used FAT32 but my phone still shows NVFS file system and real player still exists.

Please help me with this issue...I relly need to see my treo working before I go on a long vacation to my home country next week.

Did you try getting an original ROM from your provider through an updater? It's been a while since I did it, but I believe Shadowmite's forum had a process where you extract an original ROM from an updater so that the ROM tool uploads just the ROM and you don't run the updater.
  13. #593
I'm making slow progress. Got rid of Real player and Versamail but still have issues with unable to "unlock" the phone once its goes to sleep more. One way I figured to get it back to working state is to connect and disconnect the power cord. This would activate the phone.

Not sure if its a keyboard issue, the center button in the 5-way navigation works and my tough screen works properly.

Any thoughts on how to get rid of the keyboard issues? apart from opening it up and trying to clean...I do not have the tools needed to open my treo..will shop around if thats the only alternative.

    Hi,

I have messed up big time and bricked a Treo 650. Since Nverase did not run on Treo 650, Unknowingly, I ran a "flashtest" comand on MTTY and after that the Treo 650 has gone dead - no lights, no boothing no charging even with a charger. Appears I have flashed the ROM totally. Is there a way to revive the Treo? Will really appreciate your help. I have a nvbackup and a CDMA backup.pdb on my
hard disk. Will appreciate your help. Someone suggested Jtag, but I have no clue what it is or what to do with it?

Will appreciate any help. Please CC reply to "brainbraym at yahoo dot com"

    Thanks

    Hi,

I need to replace the motherboard of a bricked Sprint CDMA Treo 650. I would like to know three things:

    1. Are the CDMA and GSM motherboards for Treo 650 are identical. Can a CDMA motherboard be replaced with a GSM motherboard for a different carier and vice cersa.

    2. Besides the motherboard, is there anything else that needs to be changed to convert a phone from CDMA into GSM or the opposite.

    3. Is it possible to replace the Palm OS (650p) motherboard with a Treo 650w - Windows based motherboard and have the treo 650 working on Windows.

Thanks for your help in advance

Please cc a reply to brainbraym at yahoo dot com

    thanks

I need a Sprint CDMA Treo 650 ROM. Preferably before 1.12a or 1.13a.

    1) Yes they are, you'll need the ROM tool to swap out your ROMS.
    2) Take the radio (daughter board) off old phone and put on new.
    3) No such thing as a 650w, or WinMob running on a 650.

I've swapped many CDMA mother boards to fix GSM phones. Trust me, it works.

I have just done my second custom ROM [first one was a very stripped out version without extra languages, Versamail] adding FAT32, Butler, iSilo and TakePhone. Your discussions and instructions [esp the RomToolGuide.pdf] were very detailed and complete. Thanks to you all esp mmastrac.

Somethings I think I understand are:
    1. Total memory on Treo 650 (about42 Mb).
    2. Divided into ROM (about 20 Mb) and RAM (about 22 Mb).
    3. Smaller sized ROM means more dBcache.
    4. More dBcache means better performance.
    5. Better to remove unneeded files from ROM and use such custom ROM.
    6. Also better to move some programs to ROM and use such a ROM.

A few questions I have are:
    1. Is the free space on RAM also of any addition to the dBcache.
    2. What is the maximium space I should leave over in RAM for best performance.

    Thanks guys
