    A mac mini.

Unfortunately, projects like these just take time. I just hope to finish before the GSM 7x0 comes out and all the Treo 650 users disappear.

UPDATED: I've got a Mac now, so this will certainly be supported in the first release. Windows, Linux and Mac all together.

Well, I just got a PC laptop (new job provided it), so I finally took the plunge and dug into my 650's ROM. Everything went pretty smooth, no panic moments, no bricks. I erased some minor stuff (foreign language junk mostly) and replaced fatfs with fat32. My 4GB card is working great and I couldn't be happier! Now I've got the courage to attempt some more daring modifications, maybe adding some actual apps into the ROM, deleting some of the bigger things I don't use (the built-in mail program and Wireless Sync). It would really be sweet to reduce the size of the ROM to have more available RAM (that works, right?).

    Thanks to everyone, especially mmastrac!

Sorry guys for resending this but I still can not solve my problem. What does WARNING: Status = 27 mean? Thanks all for your patience.

Error 27 means "sector not found", I think, which means that your ROM overflowed the amount of storage. Delete some files and try again.

Because you said you 'removed the foriegn lang stuff,' I am assuming you are running a Rom w/ a larger Rom Partition.
So yes, you can reduce your partition to as small as 7.1.
What Rom are you currently running?

Thanks for the response. What I did was just download the ROM and then removed the other languages except English and uploaded it and that was the log I got.

Does it have something to do with the ROM version? As I mentioned in my earlier post I was successful in doing customizing the ROM for version 1.13-ROW.

I have tried it several times already with the 1.20-LAP and still no success.

    Any suggestions?

    Regards.

Please Help!! My phone is stuck in reset mode after attempting a custom ROM. I don't know what i did wrong...I tried to follow the instructions step by step. The only thing that i changed is that I deleted old FAT added FAT32 and deleted the realplayer files. Now my phone is stuck in reset loop and i have no idea what to do next.
I would be very thankful for any help or direction that anyone could offer!

I did even less than GuWa7... I only removed fat.prc and replaced it with fat32.prc. Everything seems to be working (except my phone doesn't recognize the 4gb card) but I also got the WARNING: STATUS=27 messages. ROM Tool then told me "ROM is too big."

Considering I only swapped one file, this seems odd.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Can anyone with the "WARNING: Error 27" message let me know if before they tried to upload a ROM it showed a very large negative maximum ROM size?

Yes, it did. "-64,XXX" or something like that.

I disconnected the Treo, soft rebooted it, reconnected, and restarted the rom tool. All was OK. Seems to be a problem when it downloads the original Treo configuration, before even trying to replace the ROM.

I've had this happen 3-4 times in the last 2 weeks (I keep updating Chatteremail in my ROM).

This error shows up randomly for you?

Yes. I thought maybe I started the rom tool before the computer recognized the Treo via USB. In most cases, I was running several other programs at the same time, so computer operation was a bit sluggish.

No large negative ROM size before uploading on my treo. Everything looked normal... "largest rom" field was about 7mm or so.. can't remember the middle value and the free space was around 150k.

I reloaded the original ROM back last night (swapped fat32 for fatfs) and re-uploaded. Same problem occured at the end.. 3 "Error 27" reports in the log. Again though, phone seems fine and free space on the device is about 18M. I'm glad the phone works but I'd still like to figure out what's going on...

treoprius: can you click the "Download ROM partition" item from the debugging panel, then FTP it to:

    Site: ftp.grack.com
    Username: u35479509-treo
    Password: treo1treo2

I wonder if there's something different about your ROM partition.

I experimented with this again. Seems if the ROM tool is started while the treo is connecting (computer is in the process of recognizing USB device), or if the treo cable is disconnected before closing the ROM tool, the next connection with the ROM tool gives the error.

    To repair it:

    1) Shut down ROM tool
    2) disconnect the treo (unplug the sync cable)
    3) do a reset of treo and boot normally
    4) reconnect the cable
    5) soft restart holding the sync button to get into the boot load screen
    6) start the ROM tool.

I was able to repeat this process 2 times, both the error and repair.

I have screen captures of the ROM tool of both the error, and then a good start after a subsequent repair, if you would like to see them.

This has happened to me on numerous occassions after downloading the ROM, especially the "-64,XXX". Always has corrected itself when I have double checked connections, made sure SD Card was out, and hot synch was closed, and redownloaded the ROM

In every case this has happened to me, it was when I got in a hurry and forgot to follow the recommended steps.

In other words, for myself, I consider it "MY" user error.

Hello All, I'm a newbee here. (one of my assigned passwords)

First off, (the good) this tool is really amazing. My palm recognizes the 4 GB card!! WOW! Excellent work. I have not seen a 'down in the guts' program this easy to use.
First side affect, (the bad) I lost my contact list I have not figured out how to restore it. Everything is still in the Palm Desktop after a resync. (the FAT32 file is still in the 'phone info'.) I'm sure we all can figure this out.
Now for the Ugly (Coyote Ugly). I think I trashed a 4 GB card!! (purchased before the price drop) I tried to format the card with window XP in a USB adapter. The card is now in the RAW format. I found a Panasonic SDFormatter V1.3 via Googling (another neet tool.) Unfortunately, this program sees the card in the 'write protect' mode no matter where the switch is...
Question for all!!!!!!!!!! There is a new 8 GB card that will be mass produced in 4Q 2006 ( http://www.dcviews.com/press/Pretec-8GB-SDHC.htm ). CAN WE DO THIS????

    Ta Ta's for now.

While I have an old Dell Windoze machine still working, I'd prefer to use my new Mac because I don't know if the Dell is that stable.

Is there any way to use the ROM Tool on a Mac, or is there an alternative?

I've already contacted Verizon, Palm, and Real Networks about removing RealPlayer, and all refuse to help. I'm now ready to write a real nastygram to these people.

I am a lazy azz and feel free to flame me if you want, but where do I start reading to educate myself about this mysterious ROM update stuff?

There are 27 pages here and I would love to read something more concise that explains what this whole ROM tool is about?

Please bear with my newbie question and tell me what page to read that explains in laymans terms what this is all about.

I read the first couple of pages and the last couple of pages and I am more confused than when I started....
