This is probably a dumb question....but what are the benefits of a custom ROM? Does the treo perform faster? I know you can delete some unused apps in ROM and replace with some RAM apps but are there other benefits?

    1) Kill off useless stuff like Versamail, RealPlayer, Tour, etc.
    2) Add stuff that you really NEED
    3) Less things in ROM improve the pitiful dbcache situation.
    4) Definite speed increases.
    5) Can add the proper Graffiti 1 libraries, the FAT32 driver (for 4GB cards)

It won't give you much, but it'll help you through until they finally release an upgrade to the pitiful memory in the Treo 600/650
Treo 755s in good condition available on ebay for $50-$75. No need to pay for insurance or buy a Pre.

    Agree, I've done that.

But surely adding stuff reduces the possible gain in 3) below.

Agree, I gained 2mb. Very useful.

    4) Definite speed increases.
I assume this is loading speed. but at the cost of the above gains.

    5) Can add the proper Graffiti 1 libraries, the FAT32 driver (for 4GB cards)
Agree, done the FAT32, but I still have the G1 files in RAM, see 3) above.

Strip out and just add FAT32 for me

    Thought of the day :
No sense being pessimistic, it probably wouldn't work anyway
