At least every day upon logging into TreoCentral we all see a "What is the Best Software to ________ " under the new posts. Most usually asked by someone new to our little corner of the world, the responses range from informative to .... well you know the drill.....but in any case, a lot of time is spent searching for links to answers and reading a few non answers. Thought we could make this a "sticky", then n00bs could easily find what they are looking for, vets could easily refer to this post and those in the middle will educate a little and learn a little.

I am defining "utilities" as something that is used to operate, maintain, tweak your Treo. To get listed need:

    Name of Program
    Latest version (as of date)
Type (Freeware / Shareware / Commercial)
    Cost
    Developer
    Developer Site
    Download Location
Vendor Description (try and remove all the wow wow adjectives )
    Editorial Comments

If a program performs multiple functions, try and keep the description down to the categorized one. I'll try and edit to keep up to date and categorize in a logical manner.

And of course "best" for me might not be best for you .... or best for the person looking. Consider this as a "contenders" thread. It will be assumed all products work on 600/650 unles sotherwise indicated.

Use STOIC (STay On In Cradle) to force your PDA to stay on when charging via the cradle or cable. This solves issues with handhelds that don't have a "stay on" option or for situations where the stay on option isn't working properly.

It does what it says it does. Very handy though a small number of errors will be encountered mostly due to developers who don't place appropriate tags in programming.

VolumeCare will also allow you to adjust your voice volume (microphone) so others will hear you loud and clear. VolumeCare also allows you to set pre-defined default volume listening levels for each speaker type on your Treo. So you can preset the listening level for your earpiece separately from the Speaker Phone. Also lets you adjust default volume of programs.

Well it would make it easier for me to answer without doing a search and wading thru the list to find all the threads myself

Disagree with your contention that BBVFS "should provide all you need."

What if you out and out lose your Treo, or have it stolen? Having your backup in the device that just disappeared won't help at all.

That said, I find Backup Buddy very annoying. It decides on it's own when to restore files. I did a hard reset because something corruped my Treo, re-installed everything I wanted by hand, got everything just the way I wanted it. The next time I synced, BB put BACK all the stuff I had deliberately left off.

That's bad program design. NOTHING should write to my Treo without my express permission.

    You Mean Resco Explorer, right?

    I'll second that one.

I'm listening. BUBVFS covers your device. Hotsync covers your data. You oughta be saving all your prc's, receipts, codes and related data soemwhere else. Your mail is also somewhere else. What else do you want to protect ?

That said, I find Backup Buddy very annoying. It decides on it's own when to restore files. That's why I don't like it either....that is I am assuming that you are talking abou the windows desktop thing. I mean if your RTFM's and asked TS when encessary you'd e fine but a program that you need once in a blue moon should be more intuitive,

That's bad program design. NOTHING should write to my Treo without my express permission.
    You must hate Hotsync

It seems like Z Launcher does some things that some other utility programs do. Any opinions?

Will the Back up buddy mentioned above store all my button preferences, and my speed dials? After a hard reset, I had to reload software and all my speed dials. Would this have been done by the Backup Buddy?

ZLauncher essentially is PowerRUN + a Laucher + a skinner. ZL does have a larger footprint and a small number of peeps here on TC have reported that switched away from ZL to alternatives becaue of problems. But ZL does have loyal following so it must be making peeps happy.

noob question - I am buying a backup untility this week and I have a question about OnGuard - is it meant to be an enhancement to your existing BU program or is it indeed a backup program on its own? The package with Uninstall at NorthGlide looks attractive. I am looking at Backupbuddy or Resco too. Thanks.
