I have a 2 week old Treo 650 (Sprint). Went to Best Buy to get a set of 2.5 jack Stereo Headphones. They only play in one ear. We tried a second set but they also played only in one ear. Then we tried another Display phone and that phone also played only in one ear. Please Help.
    Thanks

The 650's jack is designed for a telephone headset (with mic), not stereo. To use it with stereo headphones you need to use a stereo adapter in the jack.

I am confused?! So there is no such thing as a Stereo 2.5 jack? Why do they sell stereo headphones (w/ 2.5)?

I would recommend buying the adapter in Post# 4 and a stereo headset with a 3.5 mm jack.

That works for all of us and the headset is usable in lots of other devices if it has a 3.5 mm jack.

I assume it is possible to get a 3.5 with the mic and evrything to use for phone calls and everyhting?
Are these 3.5 then also needing an adapter?

So there is no way to avoid the adpater. I dislike having more parts.
But if it is what I have to do I will.
    Thanks

Seidio makes a combo headset (stereo music and micophone) with 2.5 mm jack. No need for adapters using those.

Why is his stereo headphone with 2.5 mm (not 3.5 mm) jack producing sounds in only 1 ear?

    Sorry about mis-typing your name..

SO I called the TreoCentral accessories store and asked and he said That it is a common problem. He stated I could buy the seido headphones with 2.5 and they would work.
How is it that one set of 2.5 would work but another 2.5 will not????

I have to jump in here and say that I am very happy with my Treo stereo combo headset/mic. I think they were a bit pricey. . . ~$25, but well worth it. Works perfectly and doesnt screw up the jack. Cord is a bit long though.

If I'm repeating what someone has already said look at how long the thread is and ask yourself if you really expect me to read the whole thing.

There was a thread last week about whether there is a stereo 2.5mm standard, and whether the Treo conforms to that standard. No good answer for now. The Motorola iTunes phone (ROKR?) uses a stereo 2.5mm jack and headphones for the ROKR won't work in the Treo and vice versa. I was hoping Seido would chime in and clarify the standards issue.

I have the Seido combo headset and I love them. I didn't want an adapter b/c of numerous posts indicating the adapter can break the jack.

The Treo has a rather unique architecture for that jack. The way it switches between a stereo out jack, and a phone out and mic in jack, is rather peculiar, I understand. Therefore you need one specific to the Treo650.

You have to return what you bought. Then you can either get an adapter and use any stereo phone with a standard 3.5 jack, or a hybrid headset/headphone, as sold by Palm, Seidio and no doubt some others.

I can't comment since I don't know anything about the 2.5 mm headphones being used. Your bes bet is to get some special headpones for the 650 or get an adapter.

There is such a thing as a 2.5mm stereo plug, and it can work with the 650:

I bought one of these and replaced the 3.5mm plug on my Sony headphones. It took some trial and error to figure out what to solder where, but it works fine. I would guess that the 2.5mm headset you bought is wired up differently. I'm not sure if there's a standard; if so, it seems likely that the pre-built headphones you bought conform to the standard and that the Treo does not.
