    I'm just curious.
The 1.20 updater for Mac still hasn't been released.
There are many many Mac users in the Palm world. Why the disregard?
  2. #2
There are, statistically, very few Mac users.

The money is business and business is 95% Windows. Home is the same way.

Personally I find that out of every hundred people I know, about 4 use Macs.

Not trying to make an Apple rant, just stating the facts.

What is it that you're looking or waiting for? I have a Mac and I sync my locked Cingular Treo (with the latest update) with Entourage flawlessly. I also have Kinoma video viewer/producer, which is a Mac-oriented software and I've been enjoying my Treo 650 for almost a year now. I even have Ptunes that show playlists that sort of resemble the iTunes screen. I don't know of any PC Windows people here that have a better advantage than mine. Did you check the Mac section for whatever problems that are bothering you or preventing you from getting the most of your Treo?

Maybe Bill got the Palm people drunk at dinner one night and made them promise to delay the Apple updater release.
  6. #6
All the more reason they just should release these as SD-based updates. Screw the platform-specific installers. Hotsync (either platform) frequently causes more trouble than it's worth anyway.

Treo Rat: I'm talking about the 1.20 updater not being available for the Mac platform. Mikec: Sorry, I disagree. There are more than 4 out of 100 Mac users. And the number grows everyday.

Based on what? Do a google on "Apple market share" and 4% is a generous amount. (US figures are close, but World-wide is probably half that.)

Give it time... I go to school in the midwest and I've been here for awhile. Sort of a career college student, but when I first started in '99 there were literally NO macs. Now, our bookstore is packed with Dual G5's, iMacs, iBooks, and Powerbooks. EVERYONE on campus has an iPod. And I'm guessing many people will end up doing what I did: I was a DIE-HARD pc user and mac hater for the first 23 years of my life. Then I bought an iPod and thought, this is amazing. I got so sick of having to completely clear and reformat my PC once a year and stuff always crashing and viruses/spyware and Windows in general. So I bought a Powerbook. And my computing life has been 100% less stressful. I used to work for a computer repair place, I know computers. And I know that I want a simple, easy interface with unlimited possibilities and that's what Mac gives me. My Treo and my Mac have been getting along fairly well for 3 months now. But yea, the full integration is not there and probably won't be until we see a 700p.

Just counting down the months until Apple finally makes a beatiful, amazing perfect cell phone with iTunes, iPhoto and iWeb all built in. I can't wait!

    I totally agree.
What I don't get is what's taking them so long. There is NOTHING different that's necessary for the mac installer. Just zip or stuff the necessary files and either sync them or transfer them onto the SD card. It should have taken Palm 15 minutes to get it ready for the Mac. It has now been almost 2 weeks and it's still not there. That won't go over too well with mac users.

There are various hacs out there, but it may be difficult to judge what's different and how genuine the hacs are. If it's a matter of a few more days, I prefer to wait, but I'm getting more and more frustrated. Not the best busines strategy for Palm.

How long should we wait? Apple isn't a startup company...it has been around a long time and during that time it has emassed a whopping...4%. Look, Im not anti-mac, but to imply that Apple will overtake the PC in the near future isn't even close.

Well I think the Rokr was a start. I think it will all be GSM anyway so that doesn't help me.

I was going to wait and see the positive vs. negative posts anyway...but, again, it's been too long.

I hate iPods (and Apple), too proprietary, can't play wma's. Maybe they'll change my mind when they come out with their new mobile phones.

Maybe it's just me, but I've met MANY Apple users. I was also an Apple user and would like to go back except for the fact that software companies only kiss MSFT's , so that almost everything is either incompatible or I had to buy 2 sets of the same software.

Just saw this in another thread. Looks like MSFT might be up to their old tricks again. I definitely have a love-hate relationship with MSFT.

I would like to see an Apple device too!
HP has officially ruined it's own platform and kicked webOS loyalists and early TouchPad adopters to the curb. You think after you drop it like a hot potato and mention it made no money and is costing you money, anyone else wants it??? Way to go HP!!

And some people are fools to keep believing their hype. HP has shown they will throw webOS under the bus and people are still having faith in them??? News flash: if it's own company won't stand behind it, it's finished!

I'm sure there is data out there regarding % of mac users within the palm community. Which is what digitalearth was actually saying. My hunch is that it is a higher % than windows vs mac pc users.

But alas...it probably is not high enough to motivate them into fast action with updates.

heh. you know, i have been hearing this since the ms-dos days, then the windows 3.1 days, then the windows 95 days, and finally the windows xp days. it always sound better than the classic "640k is enough" joke.

Palm has been treating Mac users like second class citizens for a long time. The solution is quite simple... Apple needs to get on the ball and produce their own device. They produce their own 'everything else.'

Okay, using DarwinPorts I've been able to "mostly" get to where we want to be...

Now, in ~/treo/unshield/Ace_Update you have the ROM files that would have been HotSync'ed by the installer, and you could then just sync them to your Treo...

NOTE: I have not done the final step since, I run Verizon & when I do an upgrade I use my wife's Windows PC to make Custom ROMs ala Shadowmite.

NOTE #2: There are other PRCs in SwapApps & Checker that you may need to sync as well.

I hate iPods (and Apple), too proprietary, can't play wma's.
Wow. Now there's an oxymoron. Windows Media is probably the most worthless proprietary format out there. QuickTime is not only better, but Apple pushes Mpeg-3 and Mpeg-4 as their codec of choice.

The world of digital audio & video would be a far better place today had WMA never existed.
