Anyone know of a secure, FTP app for a Treo 650?
I hear that VFSFTP sends clear text for logging in?

All standard ftp applications send authentication data in the clear. Only secure ftp or scp apps are going to use encrypted authentication.

I haven't heard of any for the palm yet.

Same here, haven't seen an sftp, scp, or secure FTP client to date. Another option would be wrapping it over IPSEC VPN?

pssh (an ssh client) is open-source. If you're a developer, this looks like a good starting point:

I wonder if there's a Java-based client out there which would run on the palm. Here are some starting points:

I use EzFTP version 4.1.1 by Gilles Fabre, I believe I purchased it from Palmgear a few months ago. It has a simple graphical interface and is very easy to use.

Work great. I use it to transfer the movie files I've taken with the video camera when Sprint was charging for that.

Of course most mail system do handle large files too good and your force to use an FTP Client instead. Of course you have to have a service to go to.

My friend set up a MS server and have his FTP turned on, so I transfer my large files to his server.

Highly recommend the software, I've tried one or two other but they were too difficult to use.

Unless I'm misreading the documentation, EzFTP only supports traditional FTP, not secure FTP (sftp), so your password is sent in the clear over the internet.

This is probably fine for the uses that you're describing, but not OK for the original poster.

I've been waiting years now for a good, secure FTP program. I'm a webmaster and I need this type of thing. I'd really love some sort of a wysiwyg web editor for the Treo as well.. Isn't it about time?

I was checking to see what options they have (EzFTP). All I see is a place to enter your name and password and an option to set 'passive mode'.

I do remember one thing about the developer. He will add features upon request if it improves his product.

Might be worth contacting him to see what he can do about the security issue that you are describing.

Again, I got this product from Palmgear and I'm sure the developer's address is located there, I just checked and it's not within the product itself. And I can't find the documentation, it's somewhere on my computer.

Still looking (everywhere) for a Palm SCP client. Any new developments in the past few months?

It looks as though JCTermMIDP might work:
    http://www.jcraft.com/jcterm/
    http://www.jcraft.com/jcterm/README
although there's a lot of setup required on your PC to get it compiled.

If you manage to produce a working Java Midlet which will run on a PalmOS Treo, please post back here.

Thanks for the links, jae 63. I'll see what I can do, but don't hold your breath. I'm a COBOL programmer, so all this OO stuff like Java makes my head hurt .

Then again, the fact that I can SSH in and SCP files around on the remote server but can't reference the local SD card may be enough to motivate me. So close, yet so far...

Wifile http://www.handshigh.com/html/wifile.html does WebDAV over https. Gives you secure auth but is somewhat harder to set up.

Also, a VPN solution gives you encryption, and then you could use Wifile to access your windows-machine or a ftp-server.
