    Hi

I live in Australia and bought my treo 650 recently when I was in Hong Kong. It came with firmware 01.28 and software Treo650-1.13-APR

So its the Chinese version of the phone.

I cannot install the new update for it. The unlocked GSM 1.20 software will not install, saying something like "This Pacific Rim Version 1.13 cannot be upgraded with Unknown version 1.20."

As a last resort, I tried installing the 1.13ROW that is on the Hong Kong Website, but this installer runs on the palm and says "updater is not compatible with this device".

I presume its because I am trying to update English only software onto an English/CHinese sfotware phone.

Is there anyway I can force the update ? Or is there anyway I can convert this phone into an ROW version (ie English only) so that I can run the 1.20 update ? Im desperate to run the upate as the phone resets almost every night about 2.30am.

Any help would be really appreciated.

The easiest way is to go here: http://discussion.treocentral.com/s...6297#post886297 and download the top file. It is for doing an SD card install which is much easier and it includes a file that was left out and was causing a few audio problems.

    You should do the following:
    1) hotsync
    2) hard reset your Treo
    3) use a card reader to rename the "palm" directory on your SD card to "palm orig"
(some people recommend using an empty SD card but I have used this method several times without any problem)
    4) unzip the downloaded file and step through the directories until you find the one named "palm" and add it to your SD card
    5) connect your Treo to the usb/charge cable and make sure it is charging
    6) turn the radio off (the update will do this anyway but I like to be extra cautious and avoid any chance of damaging the SIM)
    7) insert the SD card and be patient, it will install the firmware then the ROM and reset several times in the process
    8) When it is finished you will probably get the same screen as after a hard reset asking if you want to proceed which will delete all data, remove the SD card and proceed
(A couple of times I have not got this screen and it has finished cycling through resets and shows either the launcher app or the SD card screen which at this point looks empty, again remove the SD card but then do a hard reset.)
    9) Use the card reader to remove or rename the installer file "palm" then rename the "palm orig" file back to "palm. Once the hard reset is done you can again insert the SD card.
    10) You can do a sync here and it will restore most everything but I recommend going into the palm (or palmone) directory on your ocmputer then in the "username" directory rename your backup file to something else. I usually rename it by adding the date so I know when it is from. Then hotsync and reinstall your apps one bye one and reset all your preferences. This method is more tedious but avoids problems and gives you the cleanes results in the end.

Thank jamesgangut for all the work he has done to make this possible.

I also recommend you spend some time reading the forums first to get some more background and understand some of the problems people have had and why.

    Good luck.

Thank you jgm for your reply.

I have read all of the posts regarding the upgrade, but being a being of a newbie som eof the custom rom stufdf went way over my head. I was hoping to avoid the SD card method, as I had read that many people, most (all) of them more experienced than I, had problems with teh method, some of which ended up bricking their phone !

But it appears its going to be the only way to write over my APR version so that I can upgrade.

Reading and re-reading all the posts, I wasnt sure whether it was best to 'downgrade' back to an old ROW version, then apply the Palm update, or whether to use jamesgangut's version only.

You are suggesting the latter, yes ? Im going to buy an SD card reader ( I assume all the SD readers also write ?? ... gosh Im hopeless at this stuff), and give it a go tonight, by installing the top file in the link below.

By the way, your link did not work. Im assuming you were pointing here ? :

Thanks once again. I hope tommorrow to report back with success !

Most people don't brick their phones. If you do Shadowmite has tools to get it back. Just make sure you have a USB cable handy.
    PalmIII > PalmIIIx > PalmIIIxe > TRGPro > Handera 330 > Zire71 > Treo600 > Treo650 > Treo680 > Treo750 > Centro > TreoPro > iPhone 32GB 3GS
