    Go here: http://www.palm.com/us/support/downl....html#download

(Or, if you live in a different country than the US, use the "select a country" link on the top right corner of that page and work your way to the support - downloads - treo650updater - unlockedgsm page)

    Read carefully. Follow the instructions...

You may download the 1.20APR upgrade package from Palm Hong Kong:

Since upgrading 3 weeks ago, my 650 has been far more stable. So far, I have had zero resets, zero freezes and zero slowdowns. Prior to 1.71, I was having resets at the end of most HotSyncs, freezes about once or twice a month and slowdowns about once a week.

    Regards

are you sure that's due to the firmware upgrade? i think the rom would help more with stability... my treo has been rock solid. no freezes/resets/slowdowns... works great! however, i did upgrade the firmware from 1.51 to 1.71... my rom is still a customized 1.13 as i'm too lazy to make a new rom ...

I have a used unlocked Cingular t650 from ebay. no idea if the unlock was done by Cingular. It sounds like you did the latest firmware update for the UNBRANDED, UNLOCKED,t650 and it works. Please confirm, and I'll try it too. My phone info says Firmwar: 01.05, Software: Treo650-1.04-CNG. any advice most appreciated. Rob

You actually have an older version of CNG fw. So you have a couple options. You could just update the Official CNG fw, available from Palm. Or you could go w/ ENA.
Now, if you go w/ ENA, even though you can go back to CNG, it sometimes can be difficult. And CNG may still be coming out w/ another update. You could always just do the CNG Update and see how you Like it. I went Unbranded some time ago because Palm was dragging their feet releasing the CNG Update. I believe aprasad is still w/ CNG, you might check w/ him also.
p.s. Some have found it easier to customize ENA.

    Dear berdinkerdickle or Jamesgangut,
that is great, thanks. seeing as how i am usually in Canada or Italy, ENA is the obvious way to go for me rather than the cingular update. So, being pretty untechie, this might be a dumb question, is the straightforward updating process as per the sequence described in Jamegangut's message #50 (using one of the ROMs from msg#564), or do i first use the unlocked updater from the Palm website. For my end result, i love the idea of a customized ENA that strips out the things I never use. thx! btw,you guys are putting a lot of work into this forum. most appreciated.

Question from a nervous Mac user:

This discussion is VERY helpful. Thanks to everyone who is helping us, especially Peter who has exchanged private messages with me.

I'm a Mac user who wants to upgrade my unlocked GSM to 1.20ENA. I have two options (I think): (1) using the SD card option and JamesGangut's ROMs, or (2) I have access to Windows computers in my lab at the university where I work. So I guess I could just download the Windows updater from Palm and install it on one of those computers. Right?

Other than being able to do a custom ROM, is there any reason to prefer one method over the other? I will probably clean reinstall all my apps from scratch and just rely on backups for data.

You really need the Palm updater if you want a completely "kosher" installation. Using the custom or even the full firmware installations without the Palm updater will result in several files not being installed.

However, you may not be able to install software on university Windows computers in order to be able to use the Palm udpater.

    My advice: just wait.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't make it entirely clear: these are Windows computers in my lab, so I do have access to what can be put on them. I just always use my Macs for my personal stuff.

    Thanks again, everyone.

CraniumFunk and jamesgangut, you guys are doing an amazing job. I've read this thread and as a newbie, am probably asking an obvious question. I have a used unlocked Cingular t650 from ebay. no idea if the unlock was done by Cingular. My phone info says Firmware: 01.05, Software: Treo650-1.04-CNG. I'd love to install your custom 1.20 ENA in msg567. Do I do the Cingular update first, followed by yours? I want to end up with an unlocked phone at the end of this process. any advice most appreciated. Rob

    Directions to install:
    1. Backup Treo.
    2. Using card reader, rename PALM folder on SD card to PALM-old.
    3. Download the ROM & extract the PALM folder from the zip file. Copy the PALM folder to the root directory of the SD card.
    4. Hard Reset, do screen calibration. Should be at Phone app. Push Home button to get to Palm Launcher (you will see program icons).
    5. In Palm Launcher, insert SD card. . . Wait. . .Firmware updates. . .Wait. . .ROM updates. . .Phone will reboot a couple times.
    6. When u get to touchscreen calibration, remove SD card. Do calibration to get to Phone app.
    7. Hard Reset (to be safe).
    8. Restore Treo.

These can be customized using Shadowmite's Treo650 Custom Rom Tool available here:
    http://shadowmite.com/T650Tool.zip

Be sure to check this Master File Description about which files can be deleted:
    http://www.shadowmite.com/filelist.pdf

Looking for the ROM fix for SMS emoticons in 1.20? Replace the file below in your custom ROM.

Wanna know what the Palm 1.20 updater is technically doing?? See the attached pdf below for the procedure.

Looking for the FAT32 fix? Remove the file FATFS.prc from the custom ROM & replace it with FAT32.prc (Using Shadowmite's T650 ROM Tool)

A new limitation has been identified in 1.20. In order to hold CarrierDB 255 after Hard Reset, you *must* leave at least 2 languages in ROM. It seems the language selector app after Hard Reset triggers CarrierDB 255 & AmrDecLib to be created from ROM.

Wanna thank Jamesgangut for all his testing & time! [/QUOTE]

    Hi,

I have an unlocked GSM Treo 650.

I recently upgraded to 1.20 LAP and has installed CJKOS and Penpower for the Chinese language support.

When I read that the 1.20 APR came out, I am thinking about trying to change my current 1.20 LAP into the 1.20 APR because it will save the RAM currently being occupied by CJKOS and Penpower.

If possible, how do go around doing it? Sorry for the questions as I am quite a neophyte in such problems.

I've installed the stripped ROM with Fat32 but now my fat16 card is not recognized.
is this a problem of Fat32 driver ?
    what can I do ?
  16. #836
Do you have a card reader you can check it with?
    PalmIII > PalmIIIx > PalmIIIxe > TRGPro > Handera 330 > Zire71 > Treo600 > Treo650 > Treo680 > Treo750 > Centro > TreoPro > iPhone 32GB 3GS

  17. #837
well it works if I hard reset; but after the restore my card is not recognized. Even I hear no "connected" beep.
  18. #838
Make sure in your restore there is no FATFS.PRC
    PalmIII > PalmIIIx > PalmIIIxe > TRGPro > Handera 330 > Zire71 > Treo600 > Treo650 > Treo680 > Treo750 > Centro > TreoPro > iPhone 32GB 3GS

  19. #839
card reader reads the card. also Treo reads it but after restore it does not read it.
  20. #840
there is no fatfs.prc in my backup directory.
