Today's Best Buy circular (Jan. 15) enclosed in the local (10001) Sunday NY Times describes a Verizon Treo 650 as EVDO-capable at $349 after $170 instant savings. Did I miss the announcement? When did the Treo 650 get this upgrade?

Wow I just saw this too. The Best Buy's ad for Las Vegas, NV this week shows a Treo 650 that's capable of EVDO. Maybe it's misinformation by Best Buy or maybe it's a Treo 650 with new firmware that adds EVDO...

Either way, it's a Verizon Treo 650 which might mean that their Treo 650's will get the firmware update first.

I would think that there would have been a post or two on these boards if this was coming. BestBuy cant tell the difference between their *** and their elbow.

Well, when I went in to the Verizon store to buy my 650 in December they had an info card next to the 650 on the display that said it had DUAL 320x320 screens and a 1.3megapixel camera. This was a Verizon logo'd Treo 650 info card! The store was clueless, but I guarantee you my 650 came with neither feature!

EVDO requires a seperate radio- so it is not like a software patch could ever enable it. Even a revised 650 that simply added evdo would be worthwhile IMO.

Well, if Best Buy says it - it's GOTTA be true.....
Treo 755s in good condition available on ebay for $50-$75. No need to pay for insurance or buy a Pre.

That's correct. There's no way you can add EVDO to a 650 with just the software - it simply doesn't have the hardware to support it.

    I think they got their 650s and 700Ws mixed up . . . .

    So, since the 700W IS EV-DO capable -- maybe they will sell you that one for $349 . . . . .

hmm, wishful thinking, but maybe a rev B hardware tweak? Something they snuck in to test the next gen Treos on EVDO? Or maybe the ad was done with DtG?
Unlocked Treo 650 (Nov 05) BTW: T-Zones sux!

Interesting,I'm not even sure I saw the Treo at all in our local Best Buy advert (10021),I'll check to see if we still have our inserts from any of the Sunday papers.I'll have to go check.

Our local Verizon stores didn't have a clue about the Treo 700w's specs, and still if you go in today, you might luck out and get someone who knows what they're talking about.(We went,my s/o is a WM fanatic, and briefly considered going with Verizon for the 700w)

My guess is that Sprint/Verizon 650s won't be 'upgraded' to EV-DO, but the extra bandwidth provided by EV-DO may allow us to get average speeds closer to the maximum burst speeds on 1x. Just a guess.

Not likely- if anything EVDO is going to hurt us. Sprint only has 1-2 T1s to per tower that backhaul transport to their IP network. It is not like they ran fiber in preperation for EVDO unfortuately.
