Just an FYI for those of you who might have been interested...

I've put work on ChatterEmail's OWA plug-in on hold indefinitely, but I have made the plug-in available for those who want to try it. It works with the Beta ChatterEmail on my website, and requires MatrixSSL if your OWA login requires SSL. The plug-in has no expiration date; it is possible a more complete version will be available for sale at a later time, but I have no immediate plans for that.

The plug-in is nearly full-functioned, but I don't consider it ready for sale - I am not actively supporting it, there are Exchange implementations on which it doesn't work, and attachment sending isn't implemented. Push is implemented for phones on Sprint and Verizon's network; timed syncs are available otherwise.

The code and instructions for use are available in the Downloads section of www.chatteremail.com; I have set up a "support group" board in my Forums where people can "meet" to discuss, ask and answer questions, etc.

Thanks to all who have inquired about this!

    Marc

Dear friends of ChatterEmail and Nextworks:

You may have heard from Marc Blank about issues surrounding the joint venture between Nextworks and Blank-Hitchcock Associates (ChatterEmail) with regards to Nextworks’ patent-pending mobile Exchange connectivity technology. We understand Mr. Blank’s position and felt it fair to publicize the rest of the story, so that we can all get back to supporting the community of Treo users wanting to access their Microsoft Exchange data.

In October Nextworks and ChatterEmail signed a contract granting ChatterEmail the exclusive rights to use Nextworks’ patent-pending mobile Exchange Technology for Email on Palm OS Devices. The contract was drafted by Marc Blank and agreed to by both parties. Nextworks thought it was a good contract, and so must have Mr. Blank, since he drafted and signed it. Development began, the usual technical problems were encountered, were worked around, and by December a workable version was released to beta that was truly a very useful and functional product.

Marc Blank came back to us in December and wanted to change a few provisions of the contract, and after discussions Nextworks proposed a set of changes that gave Mr. Blank exactly what he wanted and in return, provided Nextworks with changes it wanted, too. However, rather than negotiating the changes in good faith, Mr. Blank rejected the whole thing and posted what you saw Thursday.

We here at Nextworks know ChatterEmail to be the premier email client in the Palm enabled mobile space. This is why we were thrilled to join forces with Marc back in October to offer our technology and know-how so that all of you, the Treo/Palm mobile community, could benefit. We are very disappointed that Marc has decided to pull the plug on a product that is very close to release because of something we have done. We feel it imperative for all of you to know that there is nothing from our side keeping this product from becoming a reality. The original contract that Mr. Blank himself drafted and that we both signed is still in effect, allowing him to deliver this product to each and every one of you, should he be so inclined. We just wanted to clear the air on this issue so that the whole story be known to the community.

We do not feel this forum is an appropriate venue for discussing private business issues, however, if you would like to discuss this in private, feel free to call Mr. Dionne or Mr. Bedsole at 256-468-6398.

    Very respectfully,

From the Team here at Nextworks

    Hi Marc,

I went to your web site looking for the download of the OWA plugin you described here, and all I found on the download page were the instructions for installation, and not the download.

Yes, I've removed it until it is clearer how things will play out.

    Hello Marc,

I have not been one of your OWA testers but am saddened by (my understanding of) the current situation of this project.

However, although Blank-Hitchcock Associates and Nextworks are not seeing eye-to-eye at the moment, based on the previous posts of this thread, it appears that both Mr. Dionne and yourself at least share common ground in appreciating the benefits of achieving a commercial-ready product, and by extension the benefits of collaborating to continue development on this project. I do also appreciate your priority to continue developing ChatterEmail so as to maintain its position as the premier Palm OS IMAP/POP/SMTP client.

Based on the contents of the previous posts as well as the fact that you removed the file for download, it also appears to me that there remains some goodwill on both your parts. I do hope you both have maintained the fundamental foundations necessary to re-build your business relationship. Although I am not an OWA user, I would like to see you both resolve your misunderstandings and any other issues to turn this situation around.

I hope I have not over-stepped appropriate boundaries with my comments but I have interpreted the fact that you both posted your comments as not only as information sharing but also as an invitation for feedback. I have always enjoyed our correspondence and do trust that you will make the right decisions.

Good luck and keep up the great work!
    Keith

I installed the OWA beta the day before Marc announced that he was cancelling the project.

From what I observed during the few days I used OWA it looked like it was shaping up to be another great product from Marc. There were enough issues with it and the fact that the project was cancelled that I decided to un-install it (that was an experience) but am hopeful that Marc and David can get things worked out so Marc can restart the project.

David, you need to get a RELIABLE web server if you expect people to take you seriously as a company especially if you want corporate customers which I suspect you do. I started trying to get to your web site back when Marc first started OWA and I have successfully accessed it only a couple of times. You've got broken links and missing graphics on the front page. There are also links in messages you've posted that don't work. That type of thing doesn't inspire confidence in a company. Before someone parts with their money they need to believe that you're going to be around to support the product they're buying.

in the mean time is there ANY email client for the palm that has OWA access?
  11. #11
I've given up on Palm-based email clients entirely and now access my OWA account through Blazer, which works fine as long as I have a Verizon 1x signal. I just wish that Blazer would remember atleast my login name, and not always ask me to authorize connecting to the server.

Anything new here to report? This Chatter/ Nextworks product is exactly what I and so many others are looking for. Has the feud been settled?

    There's nothing new to report.

I'm probably the only sucker who paid for this (Nexchange Pro). I made the bet that there would be improvements coming that would build in the OWA sync which was the only way I had been able to sync while out of the office (apart from bizconnect, but you had to stay logged into your computer for that to work, which was not an acceptable solution).

Hopefully the Windows Treo will work better.

To be more precise, they won't talk to me any more (Nextworks), so it's hard to know what they're thinking.

Don't know if this matters, but this is the last hope for me keeping my Treo. I've got about 10 days to find a push client that works or else I have to move to a crackberry. I simply cannot sync "every 15 minutes".

P.S. If anyone who has the previous beta wants to PM me and send it that would be nice... nod nod wink wink.

Well, I wouldn't give up hope. I suspect something will come of it, but probably not within 10 days.

I have OWA through work but you have to be authenticated through RSA SecurID first. Is this just for OWA or can it handle that authentication as well? Are there actually companies that have OWA wide open?
  19.    #19
The large majority of OWA implementations don't require SecurID or other security layers. Among my beta testers, over 90% had no trouble at all with authentication.

Im hoping something comes, whether it is Chatter OWA, BB connect, or something.

I got VersaMail setup on activesync last night to check every 5 minutes only to find that when I woke up my treo was frozen and had to do a reset to get it to come back alive. This happening within the first 24 hours is not a good sign.

The treo is an amazing PIM device, but horrible corporate communications device. Crackberries are excellent corporate communication devices, but average PIM devices with no camera and very little media functions.

I've got hope for either the 700w push, or someone getting an inexpensive email client that runs ActiveSync... someone other than good, or versamail.
