Is there a way to use the Visor (with Multimail or Avant Go or some other program) to retrieve e-mail from Hotmail?

You have always been able to get Hotmail with outlook and outlook express after version 4, so syncing your hotmail onto your visor is very easy. Just run mail setup and have it sync with outlook express after setting up your account in outlook express to retrieve hotmail.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear. I mean is there any way to get mail sent to Hotmail *directly*, using a Visor modem, not by first getting it via the PC and then syncing.

Or did I misunderstand your reply?

I know what you were thinking, Micheal.

I was thinking about this last night myself, but stopped when considering one would need to authenticate - I would therefore imagine its not possible, but wouldnt be surprised if a secure shell became available in an app or something that allowed connections of this nature to become possible ...

    Anyway -- just thoughts.

Would be interested to see if there is any development, etc as it sounds very qewl.

    nacro,

Yes, I was thinking since AOL which is also a proprietary e-mail format has it's own palmtop program and even AIM, that maybe MS had also come up with one for hotmail. But I guess, for now, any advantage in such a program is deemed outweighed by the desire to push CE devices over Palm OS ones.

Web-based email uses either JavaScript, or more likely, Java applets.

Today's palmtop browsers cannot handle either.

Blazer works with Hotmail. I tried it. You have to log in through msn.com though. For some reason it doesn't work through http://www.msn.com.

So exactly how did you check your mail with MSN? I've been trying but no luck. I can use MSN to log on to the internet, but vcannot check my MSN mail. How did you use blazer to do this? Go througha web interface instead of an e-mail program like eudora?

The ThinAir Mail app and PQA actually can check HotMail.

However, the catch is that you have to be constantly online to read your email -- there is no option to download it to the Visor for offline reading.

Of course, since ThinAir Mail is a PQA, you need to get the Web Clipping Libraries somewhere or from the Palm Mobile Internet Kit

I've been experimenting with Avantgo, Blazer, and Proxiweb. Avantgo and Blazer both let you check your hotmail, but they use MSN mobile, so the only folder you have access to is your inbox. Avantgo can be used for on or off line hotmail. They nice thing about Proxiweb is the ability to access all your Hotmail folders, and move messages among folders, just as if you were using a regular web browser from your PC. All three programs are free.

How do you get hotmail working with AvantGo? Or Outlook Express? I'm not thinking that OE works with the mac because the conduit only syncs the main folders and not my hotmail folders. So what does one need to do to get AvantGo working?

This won't help Mac users or users that want to download direct to their handheld, but for users that want to sync HotMail from a mail client, try pop3hot:

To view my Hotmail, I went into the Avantgo website and set up a new channel. For the address I used the link the inbox button in Hotmail pointed to ("http://lw8fd.law8.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/HoTMaiL?curmbox=....."). They do have an MSN Mobile channel in Avantgo, but I am not sure that that will get you your mail. Even setting it up the way I did, I only have access to my inbox. The only way I have been able to get to the rest of my folders so far is to use Proxiweb.

No dice. AvantGo told me that one link I tried to my inbox was redirected too many times and the other message told me I needed to use MS Passport blah blah blah blah with a secure connection blah blah blah. The AvantGo conduit for the mac doesn't offer a secure connection so I'm assuming I'm SOL. I wouldn't have even gotten a different e-mail account if I would've been able to get Hotmail working with my visor. Screw MS arrogance to hell. That's frustration for ya. Any other work-arounds that someone knows about?

From searching around the internet, I found http://www.wapmx.com/wap_hotmail.htm , a page that lets you check your hotmail for free with a WAP browser. You can get a WAP browser here: http://www.4thpass.com/kbrowser/download/index.html

Note that I have not tried this service.

I an error above. I was able to login to hotmail by going to www.msn.com. I wasn't able to do it by going to www.hotmail.com. Like a previous poster said, you only have access to the main folder using Blazer.
