    I hear you Igreen...
But I have to imagine that because of the nature of the product, there aren't too many practical ways to lay it out. Again... this is no defense for Toysoft. I personally use Lightwav, although it went through a 6 month period where it was completely unusable! When a more stable version was put out, I decided to use it since I already owned it.

But about the code... there is a fine line. In order for something to be successful, it has to be practical in use. JUST being different isn't always the key. It is again about quality. Volboost May have a similar layout... but I guarantee that ONE of these products performs MUCH better.

Not an argument... just a point of view.

I was speaking more about differences in look not code. I acutally have less of a problem with them using the same code as I do with them using the same layout.

I personally think it's wrong that Toysoft's app looks identical to VC in both layout and features. But now Jeff has changed the layout around a little bit so I guess Toysoft will have to catch up.

Did you see the comment that smiley (ToySoft) put in the VolumeCare download page on that other site?
    V > Vx > m505 > m515 > T/T > T3 > TC > 650 > 680

On the flipside, Volbooster is 80K lighter and $10 cheaper. May not be innovative (ironic that their motto is "Mobile Innovation"), but if it works as well, or better, what's the problem? I mean, do you all buy brand name drugs too? Generic drug manufacturers don't have to fork out for all the R&D so they can offer a cheaper product. Similar concept here. But when we're faced with an $80 prescription vs a $5 prescription we suddenly soften our indignation about such matters.

I say let the performance of the software speak for itself. If it's bad it will get poor reviews and people won't buy it. If it's good then GoTreo has some competition and, ideally, both companies will try to make the better product. The users win in the end.

I don't think he (smiley) has any good intentions about such a comment. Tsk.. Tsk.. Tsk.. and to think that VC has been out for quite a while and he (smiley) frequents that site, why only now with such a comment???? (his comment is dated 17 Dec. 2005). Poor guy.....

    But really...
I will not buy from Toysoft again...

I mean the same argument can be made about Chatter vs. Snapper. One had to come first and the other does the same thing and therefore is a copy right?

What I do have a problem is when a developer makes a copy which is exactly like the original (as seen in the images I posted above.) If you're going to steal someone else's idea at least add your own spin to it. To simply steal the code and slap your name on it just isn't right.
    This is exactly right, IMO.

I understand and accept practical competition...there have been some good and valid points made here. But this particular instance is still just plain wrong.

While I agree that a SIMILAR product to VC, which could create fair competition, could benefit us users, it just does not seem very likely in this case since Toysoft's support record is abysmal.

And as for Smiley's comment about VC....can you be a bigger sleazebag? Is it possible?

    All,

Here is the truth behind the product. No emotion and no biass. Also let me say that competition is a good thing but cooporation is a better thing.

On that note here is the story:

I got a call from ToySoft on November 21st asking if I would be interested in integrating my applications with Toysoft applications. He said there are many of our common users asking for this. I told him absolutely YES. We exchanged ideas and talked about the issues and problems we face in developement on the 650's. We even talked at a high level about the architecture of VolumeCare. I shared information and product license keys with him as I would any other 3rd party developer looking for a good faith partnership. He said *nothing* to me about developing a competitive product to VolumeCare but rather befreinded me into what I can only assume was a competitive fact finding mission. Then earlier this week he releases VolBooster. The math does not work out. He knew about VolBooster well before the call to me. I have written emails to him asking for a conversation. None have been responded to.

So that is the full story behind this product.

But on the positive side, this week I worked hand in hand with 2 great developers to improve the following Treo offerings:

Butler now plays well with the new release of VolumeCare!
CallFilter and ProfileCare are now integrated!

So to end this post on a positive note, the Treo community will see very good things from the core of 3rd party developers that truly care about delivering quality products. We will continue to complement each others work and if we do compete, it will be first communicated and it will be done in a professional manner.

    Jeff
