    Get it here. Butler 3.4
I've heard that polar bear steaks are tough, but maybe if you marinated them in beer they'd turn out all right.

    Big change I see is:

Remote Lock - Protect your treo if you lose it.

If the worst happens, you can send an sms to your treo with your secret password and either lock it, or delete all it's data!
Good to hear, as I haven't really been using TreoHelper much with my 650.

Except it ONLY works on SMS sent from other mobiles, although I haven't yet tried it. Web gateways or email gateways won't work as they prepend information to the SMS, and the author has no intentions of 'fixing' it so you can match anywhere in the sms.

Yes I know some dummy might put a common word for the password, but if they're smart they'll make it something like killmytreo or something like that it would never happen on accident.

I tried this yesterday on my verizon phone, sending an sms from www.vtext.com. It worked perfectly fine (wiped out RAM just as described). Quiet cool...Now I have to decide whether to continue using OnlyMe (provides continual protection, but have to always have screen locked), or enjoy having a completely accessible treo all the time, and use sms as an "emergency procedure" if I lose it. I'll may decide to use both...

I tried from that site, but apparently it won't deliver to Cingular phones.. Gave me "undeliverable" under the status after waiting a few minutes and refreshing.

I've tried a few other sites too, none of the online sites I've tried would trigger Butler. Tried one ICQ one, one Yahoo one.

Cingular has it's own way of sending SMS to a Cingular phone from a web site:

It's always been stable for me. The latest version is no exception.

Yeah I know, but just like every other thing I've tried, it prefixes the SMS with something which foils the Butler detection. The *very first* text has to be the password. Cingular puts from, subject, etc, in front of it, even if those fields are blank. Email to number@mobile.cingular.com puts (subject) in front of the SMS text, and if blank it's just (), etc..

I have yet to find a way to send the 'kill signal' to the Treo except using another mobile.

re the kill message having to be the first part of the message:
my thought here is that the worst thing that could happen was an accidental erasing.

I figure that if your treo really is lost and you need to lock it, there will be someone who can sms it from a phone for you. If needs be - find any kid and offer them $2 !

I just don't want people getting their treo's deleted accidentally - and however much I warned people about careful passwords - any sysadmin in the world will tell you that there are always people who use 'bad' passwords

I needed to do this on the vtext.com site, and perhaps it will help with the cingulair site. At first, I entered my name in the "from" field. It didn't work. I then tried sending the sms with ONLY the password in the message, and *nothing* in the "from" box. It then worked....might be worth a try.

So how about making it a sub-option to accept the password anywhere in the message? You could put the usual disclaimers, etc. My thinking is that if someone is enabling this feature, they should already know the risk exists for losing data. They should be making regular backups....and USE THIS FEATURE AT THEIR OWN RISK.

This reflects a problem with the american society in general. We go out of our way to protect people from themselves. At some point you have to let people make their mistakes and learn from them....in other words, Darwin had a point. Just my 2 cents.

Excellent addition to the already superb Butler application!

One odd glitch I've found though is that Butler always starts on the alarms page, rather than the front page.....

Hicks, that's an option in the Preferences (Menu, Options, Preferences).

Okay so are you saying you send the SMS FROM vtext or FROM Cingular? vtext to a Cingular phone fails. From the Cingular site adds From and Subject in the body even if they're blank. I forget the exact format, but even with just number and message I got:

    FROM:
    SUBJECT:

    message

Something like that. Just like email to the phone's address gives ()message if there is no subject specified.

khaytsus- I was suggesting trying it from the cingulair site, but if it automatically adds something in the Subject and From, even if blank, it won't help.

Wow, do I ever agree. I can't tell you how aggravating I find software (often embedded into Windows) which protects me to the point of my pulling my hair out.

I think Canadian society is even worse in this respect than in the States. Sometimes I think, for every 3 people who live here, there are 4 support societies to help them overcome their problems.
