Last time I tried Butler, it seemed great - but slowed down my system too much for my own tastes according to PalmInternals. Any word on the speed difference with this new version?
  2. #22
the speed is not bad, it adds about 7secs in the palminternals speed test

I hate when people say it "slowed down their system".. Sure, if it's like 300s I can see it having some real effect, but 80s? c'mon.. Never actually see that causing a problem.

Ummm How can I find out what version is on my Treo?

Don't wait too long -- I think upgrades are only free for 1 year from original date of purchase.

not true...upgrades are and always have been free for life.

What do you make of the disclaimer at the bottom of they Hobbyist webpage?

"*Free upgrades for a year if you purchase through this site (or another advertising this offer)"

When you start running a cpu and memory intensive application, such as SplashPhoto's random mp3 & photo slideshow, you'll see it lockup and randomly reset, unless it has almost 100% of the cpu and no overhead. So, yes - even something in the 80s can cause a problem depending on the applications you run. Butler itself, will not play MP3s with UDMH installed because of the overhead. Just because you cannot tell a difference doesn't mean that others cannot.

I installed the new Butler 3.4, and all of my existing settings were deleted? Argggh! What did I do wrong, or is this normal?

The author says it's an 'upgrade fee." In reality, he says that if the options change, it has to do that. It's apparently normal.

Yeah, everyone else hates it too. But I just use nagging in Butler so I guess it's not too bad for me.

upgrading preferences is not impossible, but it can be difficult to do the right thing for all possible previous versions. Better to not do it at all if you don't have time to do it correctly. Having to reset everything is better than having something transfer incorrectly, causing crashes or worse.

3.41 is out; it takes care of a conflict with the latest version of VolumeCare.

Do you need to uninstall your old version of Butler before installing the new one? Or can you just install it over? Will it save your alarm preferences, etc?

In the past, I occasionally had a hard time upgrading over my existing version; things may be different now. In any case, my settings for Butler aren't that complex, so routinely, whenever I upgrade Butler: I Disable All in the current version, warm reset, delete Butler from the App/Delete menu in the native launcher, soft reset, install the new version and re-enter my settings.

I had a problem with 3.30 when I upgraded from 3.28. Turns out that the problem was caused by two other apps. Since 3.30, I have been doing OTA updates without uninstalling and have had no problems. I'm on 3.41 and everything is stable. It's a great app.

Upgraded to 3.4 and then 3.41. Both versions cause a soft reset on my Treo 600 when I try to set password for the lock function. Anybody else experience this?

Do you have a link to that OTA update page?
