I wasn't aware there was any spamming going on...this is the first time I had heard about this hack. But now I see quite a few posts....ah well.

There are many "spammers" on this site, if the criteria used is that all of their posts are used to hawk their wares.

p.s. comparing the 2 devices is nuts indeed, they are clearly 2 different beasts..
But I guess nonobeez was really exited about his mod (understandable I would have been too) and took a few op poetic liberties...

No, this guy has spammed this "treo hacks" website here constantly, every chance he gets he spams it. Coffee or not, one gets tired of seeing the same drivel from the same people.

URLs in my signature? Sure. Do I post every time someone mentions something sorta related to go to my website? Nope.

I have one (not 4) URL in my signature, but it is very relavent to the topics discussed on this forum. I don't post here much, but when I do I try to stay on topic and be helpful.

I have other URL's, they are not Treo related and therefore are not in my signature!

Just wanted to post my view...sorry if you don't like it. Next Topic?

While this is a great adaptation to the Treo, an ipod Killer it is not. My ipod has never reset much less gone into a reset loop that requires a hard reset to bring back to life, my treo rarely resets, but it does occasionally. The ipod has been known to go into the docking station and keep playing through all night poker games without missing a beat.

I agree this is a neat mod of the Treo , but it's really just a fix for something that was done wrong when the device was designed (2.5mm jack on the bottom).

When someone mods the Treo to bolt on Firewire and at least a 4GB HD and figures out how to get it to not stutter when doing more than one thing at a time it'll be a legitimate competitor for the iPod. Of course then the battery will probably last 90 minutes on a charge...
    Current: iPhone 3G
Retired from active duty: Treo 800w, Sprint Touch, Mogul, Apache, Cingular Treo 650, HP iPaq 4350, T|T, M505 - Nokia 3650 - SE R520m, T610, T637, Moto P280, etc, etc...

I don't ever have to "reset" my iPod. Also, the screen and the controls are very responsive, I have 20 gigs of storage and a plethora of music accessories that Apple keeps the connector the same for so they will work with other/future models.

    Sorry couldn't resist

I try to convince myself to use my Treo as a Treopod. But it really just doesn't work for me. I've got a 30GB iTunes library, and I love all the music. Updating my iPod, the interface, the ease of use, it's so easy. And heck I spent all that time putting in album artwork, I want to see it.

But alas, I hate carrying two devices. So my husband gets the iPod and I use the Treo, dreaming of the day when either Apple makes a PDA that plays music, OR Palm gets one hell of an overhaul and helps the Treo become the incredible device it has the potential to be. Not to say it's not incredible now, but it needs some tweaking

heh thats funny you mention that bc i didnt say anything about it being scratched. It looks TERRIBLE and i barely used it. The scratches aren't just people moaning jsut because they can, its a very very bad product flaw.

Well I have had 2 ipods. I got sick f carrying it and felt it was a waste of Money. The music DOES NOT sound that much better than the treo. U can get ipods really cheap on ebay. The value is NOT there for me. TREONAUT fo sho.

I hate the idea of carrying two devices! Period! So if you only had to have one device? Which would you carry??? Huh? Huh?

I think that is the real question behind the original poster of this thread.
Most would want to tote the ipod but to have the ability to rock other devices too.. However folk in this community may be biased towards having an "everything-in-one-device" and that is where we treo-afficionados have the upper hand! It is about the zen of functionality.

(Can the ipod make a telephone call? Please leave us alone then!)

We will never be totally satisfied with our gadgets... that's the reality. I think the nano is cool, but I would stay away from DRM and I guess itunes.

My next hack, waterproof and scratchproof nano, with an inverted screen and video... to be worn around the neck and displayed proudly. Made from titanium and saphirre crystal. To be made popular by rap stars tired of their MBZ emblems.

coming soon to a website near you (www.ti-me.com). sorry for the spam...

I am seling all of my ipods, i hae a nano, and now the 30gb video. For my needs, straming ptunes with even a 256mb sd card is more than enough, and having 1 device instead of 2 is wonderful.

I can actually admit that I like the streaming shoutcast stations more than XM!!! So i will not be renewing my XM subscription, saving $12.95/ month. With the audio adapter and a tape deck adapter or fm transmitter, the sound quality is excellent.

    very cool
what service do you have? What bitrates can you consistantly maintain on pTunes/shoutcast?

I am in the same boat...my ipod is going away. I cannot believe that windows media player (I hate iTunes) was on my computer this whole time. I never gave it a chance until now, it is great. The only thing I miss are podcasts...but i open iTunes, they download, then open media player. my auto-playlist automatically uploads the podcasts to my treo.

No the Op defined the Treo an "iPod killer". The iPod does music and that's all it professes to do and it does this one function better than anything on the planet. Unless the Treo does music better than that then it's not an iPod replacement, just a secondary option that can be made to work to some extent. I'm not saying it's not OK for some folks but just like no one who uses a Treo to the full extent will be happy with a normal phone, no one who uses the iPod to the fullest will be satisfied with the Treo. I mean you have to use an adapter to even use a real pair of headphone, how in the world can you argue that this circumvents a dedicated music solution?

Can the Treo hold my 20GB music collection? Please leave us alone then.

There is only DRM applied to the tracks that you buy from the itunes store which I have about 20 of out of my 3380 songs and that's it. I'll buy one if that's all I like from that artist, but I like a higher bitrate than 128 so I buy all my music from used cd stores and then I rip it myself (with iTunes), no DRM is applied, they are files just like any other MP3 (I do rip in AAC/224kbps because it's cleaner but i can play them with Media Monkey).

I don't recommend buying compressed music anyway because in 2 years when there are 100GB iPods and 300GB laptop drives (I think perpendicular storage will offer this, maybe/maybe not) and space is no longer a concern then I will go back and rip everything in lossless for even better quality. People buying this one type will be locked into that format/quality or they will get to rebuy it.

Do you have a clear understanding of what DRM is? Or are you just saying this because you can't hook the iPod up to another iTunes library and initiate a sync to the PC from the iPod? If you put the iPod in disk mode you can drag the actual files from you music folder to it and then transfer them to another machine just like a powered firewire/usb drive so you can still do it, just not while it thinks it's a music player and not with songs from the iTunes store.

This also brings up another function of the iPod which is serious data storage if one has the 60GB version, I thought about getting one of the new 60s just because that would leave me ~30 GB to just store data on, that's enough for an Acronis compressed image of my laptop. I already carry a 60GB externa though so I can't really justify it. Plus I just love the plain old iPod I have right now. I don't need video (my 17" 1920x1200 Laptop handles mobile movie duty, why do I want it on a 2" sceen?) and I don't need a color screen, just music.

I'll buy the new Treo the day it comes out because the current one has shortcomings, but I'll be rockin' the same iPod till it dies. Given that fact, which one do you think has better filled its purpose for me?

    Hello,

    Well --
I know this kind of thread tends to erupt in flames but in my humble opinion you are only right as far as storing music is concerned and only insofar as the storage capacity of iPods win hands downs. However, with ptunes the playback function of the Treo is just as easy as that of the iPod and it lacks the iPods ONE BIG HUGE FAT F*kng problem: the iPod cannot do a decent gapless playback. There is this BIG hiccup, blip, bip or whatever you wanna call it between tracks. To be honest, this is only an issue if the original tracks are continuous, like in a live concert or in lots of classical music. pTunes has a TINY blip --- iPods have this huge ... er... GAP.

So, as far as I am concerned (I tend to listen to live music and classical stuff), iPods fail in their basic function.

The weird thing is - but now I am getting off topic - that the iTunes program cannot do gapless playback either (no no, corssover fading set at 0 is not the same thing, in case anyone was gonna say that), neither on Windows machines nor on Macs (got m both, so I am flame resistant).

Just my 2 cents. Make that 4.
