Anyone know how long the update period will be for registered users?

I'm sure something like this will be fine as is for QUITE some time, but I'm sure there'll be some feature I'll want in the future.

$20 is a pretty good deal.. if you don't get it in your head that Palm should have something like this included in the OS a long time ago

    B-

Updates will always be free. We will try to do the same for upgrades as well (they have always been so with our other products), but that is a bit harder to promise. ;-)

Just got the 1.0b2. Sorry to learn that tabs aren't available, and yet concerned, too, that I don't know what other features may be missing.

Right now my Visor is getting Fatal Exception errors and it looks like I might have to do a hard reset. Don't know if it's attributable to Wordsmith, but I'm glad I got everything on the backup module.

So should I spring for it now, pay $19.99, then pay the unstated upgrade price when Wordsmith might become fully functional? Or should I wait till 1.1 comes out? I guess it boils down to what will be the upgrade price?

I've, too, have been getting numerous SystemMgr.c,Line:4169,No more Owner IDs error messages when syncing WordSmith which result in having to reset my VDx. I've been dealing with both Tamara and Alexander at Blue Nomad about the problem and they're working on it. They're a very responsive company.

Are you getting fatal exceptions while running WS? If so, please send a bug report to beta@bluenomad.com, and we will certainly address the problem.

On updates/upgrades, 1.1 is considered an update. We would certainly not charge for that. That I can promise. ;-)

Alexander, thanks for your replies (esp. about the free upgrade to 1.1 for current 1.0b2 users). Your advocacy for BlueNomad was enough for me to pay the registration just moments ago.

Re the fatal exceptions, it just happens, and really seems irratic. Wordsmith wasn't running at the time. Software used frequently include Ultrasoft's Money, Avantgo, HandyShopper, ePocrates, Hi-Note, Stowaway driver 1.2, and BigClock, in addition to the standard Visor software (datebook etc.). Sigh... Haven't found a procedure to do it again... So I'm watching the discussions here on Wordsmith carefully.

    jy-

    Many thanks for your purchase.

It sounds like your fatal exceptions may be unrelated - but if they occurred during a system find or reset it could be related to WS.

If you do manage to find a reproducable case, as I mentioned previously, please don't hesitate to contact us.

    Thanks again,

I started using WordSmith immediately after it was available and absolutely love it! I registered as soon as I could because of the responsiveness and obvious commitment to excellence on the part of Blue Nomad. The most recent beta presented me with an interesting problem, though...when editing, I can only select a word/phrase/etc one time! After that I can no longer select an item for editing until I exit the program and go back in! I haven't written them about this yet, but as I see they're on this discussion, perhaps I won't need to and I can see if others have had a similar problem.

As for the fatal exceptions others have had, I haven't had any problem with that since the beginning.

One issue I have written about is the ability to categorize documents on the desktop and keep those categories on the handheld (ala Documents To Go). Currently it seems that I can categorize to my heart's delight on my Visor, but when I sync, the program always duplicates all the docs in unfiled! Have I missed something? When I wrote about the problem I got an immediate response which said they were aware of the issue and are continuing to work on that and others.

These early bugs aside, this is the editor I've been waiting for. Sorry Paul, but pEdit is no longer on my Visor.

I experienced the same thing with selecting. I found that simply closing then reopening the document fixed it. Due to the other errors I was getting, I removed the document I had been testing with and subsequently the problem went away (maybe I shouldn't speak so soon ). I don't know if it was a corrupt file or a bug causing the problem or not. I did email Blue Nomad about it and they've been unable to duplicate the bug thus far.

As for customer service, Blue Nomad is without a doubt the best company I've ever dealt with. I emailed them on Saturday the 23rd with a report of my first error and they replied less than 3 hrs later... on a Saturday evening... during a holiday weekend, no less! On Sunday, I emailed them another bug report with file attachments and received a reply dated 12/26/2000 2:55am... They've been absolutely great in responding to my problems and I'm confident that they'll find a fix.

I went ahead and registered yesterday simply because of their support. Imagine that, registering a buggy app! That's how much they've impressed me.

For those of you who may not know, these are the same people that brought us BackupBuddy and InstallBuddy... 2 of the best programs I use with the Visor. I'm sure WordSmith is going to be just as good as those other apps.

I have been getting this error message from time to time as well. As far as I can tell it happens when you have (or try to sync - ??) TOO MANY WordSmith BDOCs on your handheld. Whenever the error occurs it causes the WordSmith conduit to stop on whatever BDOC it was currently transferring. If I then move some BDOCs to CF (or delete some) I can sync the remaining ones. I guess if I had a lot more to sync that I would have the problem again, but I have not had that many files to sync before. I have noticed the problem using the WordSmith conduit to sync AS WELL AS using Pinstall to transfer some BDOCs I created with the command line converter. Based on the error and the conditions I have observed it under it seems that the PalmOS does not like having too many memory handles or files with the same owner.

I'm getting the error again with only one DOC being transferred. This morning, I removed WordSmith from both the Visor and desktop, did a full sync/backup, hard reset and restored the Visor, and reinstalled WordSmith. I then created a new file in Word, added it to WordSmith, synced, and everything was fine. Modified on the Visor, synced back to the desktop fine. Editied the DOC in Word, synced, and got the error again! Again, this was a fresh installation of WordSmith with only 1 document (less than 1k according to WS) being synced back and forth. I'm not sure it's connected to the number of files or file size, per se.

I found out that even when you delete an application from your handheld some databases might stay resident in memory. I posted my observation experiences with tealpaint in the software forum. I would recommend to use the applications DBcleaner from http://www.palmix.itil.com/newpalmix...clean_home.htm

and remove all databases created by wordsmith then reinstall it.

    hope this helps

How many did you have when you saw the problem? I'd like to have a look if I can and see if I can make it work.

Interestingly enough, this appears to only be occuring on Visors - which PalmOS version do you each have installed?

Ryan or MarkEagle - do either of you have BackupBuddy? If so, can you turn on backup of builtins, backup of unsaved preferences, and then send me your entire backup directory (make sure no exclusions are on)? Then maybe I can try to find out exactly what may be going on as I should then have a replica of your machines.

If you don't, then drop me a line and we can get you set up ASAP.

    Thanks in advance,

    Alexander

    Alexander,
I have PalmOS version 3.1H3 on my Visor Deluxe.

I do not have BackupBuddy, so I can't help you at the moment with your other requests, but I would be happy to be "set up" . Feel free to e-mail me directly about this.

I am currently testing out the conduit to see what causes the error and I will be e-mailing Scott and posting a short summary here later tonight or tomorrow.

I'm on a VDx running 3.1H3. I'm heading over to BB now to make the changes to send you everything. Where should I email it to? If you don't want to post the address, you can email me with it.

Well I did some more testing tonight and really saw a lot of weird results, so I take back what I said before Mark .

Below are some of my noteable observations:
    1) All of this testing was done using Pinstal, not the standard Install Tool. I really don't think this changes anything as I have seen the problem with both.
    2) I was working primarily with 14 files on my desktop, all of which I made with the command line converter (therefore it is easy to install them). I also have 10 or more other BDOC files on a CF card that I was moving on and off my main RAM during the testing.
    3) During EVERY sync of all 14 files I had the error occur. However I was able to install them all in 3 separate steps. Also it was not always the same file or file "number" (in the install order) that causes the crash, once it happened at 12 of 14, but several times at 14 of 14 files. I also had it happen at 5 of 6 files.
    4) I was able to cause the error to occur on many different files, seemingly depending on where they were in the install order. But it was definitely NOT file dependent (for me).
    5) Freeing up more memory on Visor did not help the problem.
    6) The error I obtain during install is:
SystemMgr.c, Line:4169, No More Owner IDs
    It requires a soft reset.
    7) The error I get when starting up WordSmith is:
    PRecordHandle.cpp, Line:99, Error Querying record
This "usually" happens when starting WordSmith after having error during sync, but after this error and _another_ reset WS starts up fine. Then if you try to launch the BDOC that caused the error during the sync you again get the same Querying record error. You can, however, delete the file without any trouble.
    8) I varied the number of files I have on my Visor and could reproduce exactly the error during install. The error occurred with 26, 29 and 34 files (I did not try any others) that showed up in the list view within WS (not all were BDOCs some were just standard DOCs - type:TEXt). So the problem does not appear to be directly related to the number of WordSmith files, or the number of files being installed.

I stopped after these tests as it got kind of boring . I guess the most important thing is that it was always possible to get all the files I wanted on my Visor, I just had to deal with a few resets.

I spent probably better than 4 hrs today playing with this, including a hard reset and at least 20 HotSyncs. One good thing is I'm learning just how much life there is in my new FullCharge battery pack!

I never tried syncing more than 3 files at a time. But now that you mention it, I recall the first or last file being the one noted in the hotsync log when I got the SystemMgr error.

The PRecord error never prevented me from running WordSmith; only got it when opening the file that caused the previous SystemMgr crash, and the file was never openable... had to delete it manually and resync it to the Visor.

I also noticed some additional errors with the "suspect" doc files noted under Quickword in the hotsync log (which I detailed in an email to Blue Nomad support earlier today).

Just out of principle and because I hate any machine getting the better of me, I want to work this problem out (ok, I want Blue Nomad to work it out for me ). It's a good thing I'm home from work this week, too.

    Ryan, Mark et. al.:

We just posted beta3, which we hope should solve this problem - it looks like a hairy PalmOS bug, which we had to work around. If it doesn't, please let us know!

Thanks for your help and patience,
