I don't know. I have TealDoc and SmartDoc and after I installed Wordsmith, I was still able to read my doc files with both of them.

However, none of them have any special formating in them. So that could be the diffence.

There are only two gripes about wordsmith.

1)Files seem to load slower then my other doc readers.
2)Not a gripe really, I just wish it had a find button like in TealDoc.

Has anyone else seen a problem where it sometimes displays blanks instead of two or three letters, right after you've selected and modified part of a word, until you close and re-open the document?

    Hi,
Has anybody tried using the wsconv.exe utility program for DOS yet?
I keep getting a "This program doesn't run in DOS Mode" message.

I sent a note to Blue Nomad about the need for a printing function. I received a note back that a print function was "definately on their list."

I'll hope for it in future versions.

Wordsmith seems to be piddling on my DOC files.

Either that, or it's removing the smell of one of my other DOC editors, so *it* feels required to make its mark on their databases. Regardless, my Palm is now backing up all my DOC files all over again every time I sync now, because the date's changed.

HEY, SOFTWARE AUTHORS, IF I HAVEN'T ASKED YOU TO MODIFY A FILE, QUIT SCREWING AROUND WITH THEM.

I like the potential of Wordsmith but I've also hit a few of the same bugs.
    • Characters or parts of characters disapear upon editing but reapear when scrolled off screen then back on.
    • Bullets (\.) don't appear when you reopen a document you add them to. They turn into line-returns.
    • When switching to full screen while the menu bar was minimized caused the last displayed line in a memo to turn to giberish.
    • I was editing a doc and switched to another program. When I came back to Wordsmith, the doc had reduced from 14k to 1k and caused the same fatal error: Fatal Error, Data Mgr.c, Line:6550, Indes out of Range I wound up having to delete the doc.

I still really like the program and I trust they will solve the majority of the bugs in the full release.
Some other features I would like to see added:
[list][*]Drag and drop for files on the memo/doc list screen. i.e. If you want to save a memo as a doc, you could just drag it to the doc tab as in LauncherIII.[*]Bulleted lists/ numbered lists[*]tables [*]images, or at least placeholders for them[*]built in font list instead of just fonts from the desktop copy[list]
    <table cellpadding=3 width=50% cellspacing=0 border=1 bgcolor=#000000><tr><td align=center> ***<font color=#ffffcc face=verdana>Ike</font> </td></tr></table>

Isn't the "go to" feature similar to find?

I love pEdit and have evangelized about it in the past. pEdit's still the way to go for power users. Because I do technical writing, I need to be able to create enumerated and bulleted lists. Most text editors are more powerful the most word processors, but have a steeper learning curve (e.g. vi vs. Word). You can spend months learning all the features that pEdit has to offer.

But for casual use, correspondence or simply importing Word documents with most of the formatting intact WordSmith is the better choice. WordSmith has a much cleaner UI, especially in the enhanced Memo Pad editor. I expect that I'll use WordSmith for any writing that doesn't absolutely require the more sophisticated abilities found in pEdit.

Anybody know the pace on the rev. cycle? This is a great, great, great product, but I'm not sure I'm ready to fork over the cash at official release ver. 1.0 if we haven't seen them eliminate a lot of these bugs.

One more: I use the "TextPlus Anywhere" feature of TextPlus (so it provides its word-complete drop-down lists in every app), but the screen doesn't re-write so you can see the words completed, until you scroll down. This is the only app I've ever seen so far that does this, BTW.

Our rev cycle is going to be quite agressive as we want to get *all* the bugs out before we officially release it, hence the public beta ;-) We are still getting caught-up from PalmSource (which is why I am writing this on Sat. night ;-). So expect to see frequent revs over the coming weeks.

The beta isn't meant to indicative of the final stability of the product - if we thought it was stable, we would start selling it ;-) But we do not believe in selling software before its time. So, we put it out in public beta to solicit suggestion and bug reports so that we can make sure that when and if you do decide to purchase, that the "final" 1.0 product lives up to your expectations.

As far as TextPlus goes, we have contacted them about getting our two products working together. It appears that TextPlus modifies certain OS structures in a way that is incompatible with WordSmith, though it should be pretty easy for them to fix this. If it is something that is important to you, I would recommend contacting them as well.

    Thanks,

    Alexander

The DLL problem came about because of a slight oversight on my part (not reading the fine print in the MS developer documentation can be hazardous). I have posted a new test build that *should* fix this, as I don't actually have a machine that I can verify this on (though you will still need IE4 or better to be installed if running W95/NT4).

    You can get it here:

    http://www.bluenomad.com/seeding/wssetup.exe

Please send any feedback to our beta email address at bluenomad.com (I am not spelling it out here to avoid getting spam at that address ;-).

Thanks, and sorry for the inconvenience. It took me a bit to get this out as we are still catching up on a ton of email that accumulated during PalmSource ;-)

OK, let me amend that. *something* is hanging the date on my DOC files, and it started happening when I installed Wordsmith. They say they don't modify any DBs unless I modify them, so maybe it's some combination of events that's getting triggered. Anyone else seeing this?

Wow... mine works perfect. Not a problem yet, not even the date problem you mention.

I wanted to take a second, and give my appreciate to the developer and his existence on this board. It always gives me a sense of assurance when a developer or someone in the company comes down to the user level and communicates with them. I remember Innogear did this once, funny... never heard from them again.

But, let me say that since this developer has spent time in responding to our comments I would purchase it for the simple fact that I believe we can form the product with the producers.

I have not had the date problem at all either. The conduit works very well, much better than the Quickword conduit. Maybe you (argent) should try deleting WordSmith and/or your DOC files and re-installing?? If you are not sure that this problem happened with WordSmith, it might clear it up to test without WordSmith or the conduit being present at all.

I would also like to thank the developer(s) for monitoring the discussion here. I have received a personal e-mail from another member of their team about some issues I raised about slow loading DOCs, so they are definitely listening and they definitely care. Keep up the good work!!

This is one of the letters I've sent to Bluenomad:

    Hi:
I'm using a Visor Prism with PalmOS 3.5.2H1. In my color device <B>I'm not able to view characters like "ñ óéíó´ á" using WordSmith.</B> Yes, you could write them but when you want to view them again they are not present. However, I've never experience this problem with any other software I've use like built-in Memo, PeditPro, BookWornie, CSportrun, Smartdoc, etc. I'm not the only one who has this problem. If you go to PalmGear and read the comments from users for this product, you will read comments of people that says that they cannot view special characters in his PDA.

Bad handling of umlaut characters åäöÅÄÖ in the beta 12/13/00 limits usability. I look forward to seeing a bugfix for this problem in the near future, and will certainly revise my rating."

    12-Dec-00 by Timothy Leung
This is an excellent idea...However this app does not handle Chinese (double byte) characters at all so I have to forego it. As both InstallBuddy and BackupBuddy sames to handle Chinese text without a problem, I wonder if this is an oversight on the part of Blue Nomad...

    13-Dec-00 by Ka-Lok Fung
WordSmith, although reliable, is still fairly unstable (that's why it's beta)....Two-byte languages is not supported at this time but is in the works. Implementation of more Keyboard functions is also in the works...

    <B>MORE BUGS:</B>
When <B>using Chrome black background, I'm still not able to view my memos or docs in the first view</B> or in other words, after I tap on the WordSmith icon. Very important to repair this so I can get rid of other doc readers and editors.

    Thanks

    Al

I would also like to see the ability to start writing and a new memo is started, as in the built in memo. This could maybe be a preference option to what you would like the default focus to be on, either the filter or a new memo/doc. Also maybe if you hold your memo button down for 2 seconds it would switch from memo to doc tabs and back; short presses would change the categories.

We are hot on the heals of this one. It turns out that it is a problem with the compiler's optimizer. I always test in debug mode with the optimizer off so I never saw the problem. With the debug build all of these special characters work great. As soon as we turn on the optimizer, things get wacky.

Don't worry. Now that we know what the problem is, the fix is on the way.
