Thanks for your educated guess. I think I'll hold off till we have something specifically for the Unbranded 650.

just installed it on my ROW treo...so far so good.

Upgrade went smoothly from 1.43/1.14 to 01.51/treo650-1.14dbg/6000. I just upgraded, and am very pleased with the sound quality on my side. I just now compared 'Lady Voicemail'. Those messages used to be distorted like the speaker is loose even at lower volume settings.
It was such a big difference (almost no distortion) that I experimented a little. All distortion is now gone after disabling Volume Care. Does VC gain volume at the expense of (now@1.51?) a little distortion?

The distortion rate is dependent on many factors:

    1) The quality of the signal from the tower
    2) The quality of the source on the other end of the call
    3) The boost level you have configured in VolumeCare. Maximum boost is *not* always the best setting!
    4) The ROM you are using is not in any way an official Palm ROM. Results from this ROM can vary greatly. Who knows, there could even be a virus in the ROM. It was initially distributed with an illegal copy of VolumeCare!

VolumeCare will still give you added volume gain. You just need to make increamental adjustments to the boost levels until you get the performance you desire. VC will also give you the ability to crank up the MIC volume so your voice is louder to your callers.

    Jeff,

They're pulling the FW files out of the official Cingular rom.

He was talking about the unofficial 1.14dbg ROM software, not the 1.51 firmware.

    1.51 works fine. thanks.

Can you delete the upgrade files from RAM after upgrading?

    Normally they are deleted automatically.

I've been running FW 1.51 with my 1.13-ROW.
I do not (did not) use volume care. Sometime the volume was so low that I could only faintly hear the caller on the other end. Full volume setting on the rocker was equivalent to the lowest volume output, I could only reduce the volume from there.
So yes, I can confirm the volume is lower. Unusable sometimes. It appears to be a bug or FW/SW incompatibility where the Treo volume gets out of sync with what the software is telling it set the volume at. It might be that they fixed (improved) volume on the Cingular software and firmware together and the fixes are co-dependent making the change in the firmware incompatible with 1.28-ROW software.
So I started using volumecare and it completely fixes the problem.
I think it's best to go back to FW-1.31 which was the last official firmware from palm that I was using.

Actually, that's not true. 1.28 was the actual firmware shipped with 1.13-ROW. The 1.31 firmware came from the Cingular 1.15 updater.

Personally, I haven't witnessed such sound volume issues using 1.51 firmware (from Cingular 1.17) with 1.13-ROW. Though I wouldn't be surprised to hear there may be an incompatibility, I think there are enough of us running it now that if there were a more basic issue we'd be hearing LOTS about it.

I said it was the last official firmware from palm, not the official firmware for ROW. I should have been more clear as that's what I speficially meant.

I wonder what happened to my Treo then. I have considered doing a hard reset, but I've been putting it off because everything is happily the way I want it right now and it would just be all that work to get everything re-installed an reconfigured. I'm just too lazy espcially knowing the ROW release shouldn't be more than a month away.

Well, 1.51 is no less official than 1.31 was... for ROW anyway.

There have been some cases where I have found that simply doing a full backup, hard reset, and restore can make it feel like a whole new Treo. It's scary to think that random/old bits keep lurking over time, but apparently they do...

That's part of the reason I've *so* come to enjoy BBVFSPro (though some swear by Resco's tools)... I can do this anywhere anytime w/o worrying about hotsync niggles. I have come to truly loathe Hotsync, or anything requiring it to install or license a product.

Argh, you're killing me. I never said 1.51 wasn't official. It is 100% official, I wouldn't have installed it if it wasn't. I meant 1.31 was the last official firmware prior to 1.51 (independent of software versions.)
Put it this way. All I was trying to say was that I wanted to go back to the previous version of firmware and that does not include 1.43 which is far from official.

Good tip on the hard reset/restore. I've done that before as well and it might work in this case. I have a little bit different approach. I use Botzam Backup and back up my enire Treo to the SD card.
I hard rest, then cherry-pick my restore files.

All of my apps are stored on SD so I usually just re-install most of them with the exception of few that I did a cherry-pick restore from the backup. I also restore my blazer bookmars, favorites pages, and call log. Otherwise that's it.
The only hassle is that I do not restore the preferences file, so all of my registration serial numbers have to be re-entered.
Not really all that bad of a hassle and kind of fun to do sometimes, I just haven't had the time in the last few days.

I'll try a back up, hard reset, restore and see if that helps.

I'm using BBVFSPro for that now... have you used both to compare? I haven't heard of Botzam before, so I'm curious...
