I tried VC back in the 1.2x firmware days and it caused me nothing but headaches. Been on 1.31 for a while w/o VC and am using 1.51 now w/o it too.

I am not detecting huge changes in volume (handset, speaker, or BT) with this update. I *am* noticing better signal holding in what used to be marginal areas... such as home, where I have one good and one marginal network. Unfortunately, the marginal one seems to be the preferred one, as configured by Cingular. Now the phone holds signal there much better.

Anyone have an educated guess on how long it will be till we have an update for Unbranded GSM Treos?

dunno what an "educated" guess is, but last heard that the update is with the carriers for checking... should be out in the next couple of weeks for sure.

i'd say give this firmware (cingular) a pass and wait a couple of weeks more for the unlocked gsm update. firmware 1.71 & software 1.20... sounds sweet to me!!

Totally agree with your evaluation about volume. I think that we'll always need VC, Treo is not usable in a loud environment without VC.
From the other side I noticed with 1.51 that the voice quality is better than the previous fw (1.28 or 1.43).
I made 3 calls and the echo seems to be solved.
    Ciao.

Unfortunately an italian guy posted about some FREEZE events (in CNG 1.17 issue Thread).

    What about you?

News about testing with 1.43 had always been very positive during last 3 weeks (currently I've been freeze free for 2 weeks with 1.43).

Is that italian guy the only user that nocited a freeze??
    Ciao.

is upgrading the firmware different to upgrading the ROM? On 1.43 I created a custom ROM. Can I just run this firmware updater without redoing the whole ROM?

Yes, this is just the firmware, not the software.

To answer your question, yes you can run the FW update without updating the ROM. Many folks feel it it actually better (safer) to do them seperately.

I just did the updater and in the middle of it my phone reset. Now I get a error NOT ENOUGH POWER. The phone won't work. Can any one help?
  16. #36
I had no problem upgrading to 1.51 from 1.43. I am also using 1.13-ROW code. I did a hard reset and created a temp account to install the FW upgrade via hotsync. It all went very smoothly.

    I might try that tonight.

*Ensure that you have at least 5mb of ram free. Battery power should be full and Treo is plugged when updating.

1.If you have handzipper or resco explorer, unzip all files to ram.
    2. If not, just unzip and install via hotsync to ram
    3. Go to applications or refresh your 3rd party launcher. You will then see the GSM updater icon.
    4. Tap on the update button. If your radio is on, it will automatically turn off.
    5. Once the update is done, your Treo will automatically reset.
    6. Go to phone, menu, options, Phone info. Firmware is now 1.51

Warning: Do not customize this with other ROW updaters. Use this seperately or you may risk bricking your Treo.
I think I'll wait for the official word from Palm.

Our Palm local distributor said they'll have an update available by early December.

Ok, I've got to ask - does early December mean for Sprint/cdma also?

EDIT: Assuming they know beyond GSM (in the Philippines)
