I totally agree with you. The call center is only able to say: "Do an hard reset, better if format your pc as well". The don't know nothing about what the repair center does. I'm with you at all.

I recently do a formal complain trought a Vodafone shop (where I bought my unit) for the freeze problem and some other hw issues (hotsync connector, faulty p key and a camera issue). After the 4th replacement they gave my money back.

If you want I can forward to you the details in order to use my example against e-motion (Palm distributor in Italy).

To get a list of the files in the updater, unzip the Mac installer. None of these files should be on your Treo when the update completes so you can safely nuke them.

Are you saying that you had a freeze with 1.43 or 1.51 fw version?
I've tried the version 1.51 as a last chance before sending back the terminal to Palm.

And the treo had a reboot after 5 minutes.

IMHO no sw update can do anything if applied on a poor HW.

I recently do a formal complain trought a Vodafone shop (where I bought my unit) for the freeze problem and some other hw issues (hotsync connector, faulty p key and a camera issue). After the 4th replacement they gave my money back.

I bought the my treo used, and for me is too difficult to have any contact with the original phoneshop. And I think that if I move some legal action I want to hit Palm and not the Phone shop.

BTW thanks a lot for your help.

In the last week I've tryed alomost all I can do, all the known sw/fw, and I've tried with all the Italian operators (Wind/Vodafone/TIM) and with various kind of SIMs 32/64/128 KB.

No matter the treo freezes, hangs, or reboots sometimes after 5 mins, sometimes after a couple of hours.
You must have the worst history in the world for Treo's then.. Or they keep sending you the same phone back. Can't think of any other explaination, nobody else has such problems. How could anyone use it if it reset every 2 hours without any third party software or anything like that? Sure, some third party stuff is bad, but avoid it and you're fine. Crashing like that with NOTHING installed obviously means bad hardware or something, no other explaination, but like I said.. You must have the worst history, period.

Well, like some I started the update and was informed that the ROM did not complete. Reset the unit and end tasked the job. Started it up again - it reloaded all of my apps during the hotsync. OK fine. Then I got to the point where many have had to end task because after the completion of the hotsync it would just sit there in static mode.

Well I tried about 5 more times - same results. I ended up hard resetting, loading 1.15 - syncing with new user id - the dumping 1.17 ontop of it. I have only had my 650 for about week so I was not aware of all of the faults I have been reading about lately. Anyhoo, so far so good.

Does anyone know what Device Customizer is? It appeared after I finally had a successful update.

When I tap the icon, it creates an error stating the scenerio wasn't present. It then locks up the power button. I've got to soft reset before I can turn the Treo off.

I hope you are right, but frankly I think that palm has some expertize in CDMA networks but has very poor knowledge in the GSM ones.

In the past Iv seen some terminals that had some problems with a SIM brand or a SIM size, the treo (at least the gsm one) has problem with the wireless comunication at all. :-)

    Solutor,
forgive me if I'm stressing you, but your answer is cancelling mi hope (actually more than 2 week FREEZE and CRASH free with 1.43).
Did you have the classic FREEZE event with 1.51 or just a reboot? Did you try to to call your number wile in a frozen state? Was the line free as always with 1.28?

Sorry again for my questions...........but this is important for all of us.

Yes, both freeze and reboot with the 1.51, th line when in hang state somtimes was free and sometimes not.

    Vittogn,
I feel your pain, I really do.
Here is my suggestion: If 1.43 works out for you for more than 5-6 weeks with No Freeze (which seems to be greater than the length of time that your previous phones could go without freezing), then stick with it if it's otherwise working for you.
If it works, you won't gain a whole lot upgrading from 1.43 to the next firmware (maybe a little volume, maybe not). Otherwise, at least your phone is not freezing up.
Then you can relax and stop worrying about it. Good luck.

    R:

If you have successfully updated and finalized the install/ROM update of your Treo... and all is well, you can delete them. There are four of those files that, when the update is running, compile into a full ace-palmos.zip. they are ..a, ...b, c and d.

    Copper:

Device Customizer is an initial directory, inside the Palm directory, where your Scenarios and Treo650 directories are located. Your ROM is located in the ace-palmos.zip file inside the Treo650 directory. It sounds like the 'cleanup' part of the install did not complete fully, and left that directory and or icon on your system.

If your install is fully complete and successful, you should be able to delete that directory/icon... and any stuff in it if it has contents.

    Thanks a bunch.

What I think happened is during one of my failed attempts to update the ROM, I successfully loaded the update software and it became part of my backup for the successful update.

When I performed my first Hotsync, the software was re-installed. I always have a fear that I'm going to delete something critical - especially if I don't know what it is.

I use Keyshades-light. I have to manually run a program to toggle the KB lights, but the application does not hook into the system in any way. Very unobtrusive.

BTW, my performance boost was almost identical when I deleted keyshadehack.

from 3000+ to 111. Big performance boost in moving around.

Never having tried to delete keyshadehack prior to the upgrade, I wonder how many other problems it has caused...

Once you are sure that the update has completed, do you do another hard reset (and restore using the original userID)?

The hard reset should get rid of all installer files left behind.

I wonder why Palm did not recommend the hard-reset-use-a-temporary-ID method like they usually do. That is the cleanest way of doing he ROM updates.
