the BT part of the upgrade sucks big time. on my headset (jabra 250) and my car the incoming calls dont always transfer. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. With the orginal BT software in the 650 i never had this problem (I did not do the upgrade to the version released in the summer).

Has anyone experienced this and figured out what is up?

Try removing any pairings you have (including the 250). Then re-pair and see how it works. Someone on the forum with more expertise than me suggested removing the pairing file to make a clean break. I may be saying that wrong...but you get the point.

I had to "re-pair" my Treo with my car bluetooth and my Sony HBH662 to get them working with the Treo again, meaning delete all (Treo and Headset)pairings and then pair them as new devices with the passkey codes. The voice quality on my HBH662 even improved a bit. I have the jabra eargel so the volume was never an issue for me.

Maybe your problem is Jabra 250 specific. Tried them before -they sucked!

I bought an unlocked Cingular Treo 650 from ebay about 6 weeks ago. This phone has the Cingular logo on the left above the screen. Even though it's unlocked, since it has the Cingular logo, would I be able to use the 1.17 update successfully without problems or should I wait for the version that may come out eventually for the unlocked GSM Treo 650s?
I only want to do the update if it would be without any hassles. I'd rather not do any hacking to get it done. I'd just as soon wait if necessary.

    Thanks

What's on it, now (Menu->i, in the phone app)?

The SIM unlock status of the phone has no bearing on the software you use on it. Check the software version (Menu -> Options -> Phone Info) and see if it has CNB (Cingular Blue - Formarly AT&T) or CNG (Cingular Orange) at the end of the software version. If you do, it still has Cingular software on it and you should be able to use the current update. If it says ROW or something else, then you will need the software for the generic Treo's.

SIM lock only determines whether you can use SIM's from different providers. Phones purchased directly from PALM are unlocked. Phones purchased in the US from Cingular are locked to that specific carrier (regardless of software). You can put different versions of software on the phone, but the phone will remain locked until you get the right unlock code.

Once the phone is unlocked, what software is installed on it does not affect its locked status. You can overwrite the phone with either Cingular or other software and it will still accept other SIM cards.

The problem with trying to load Cingular software over phones with other firmware is that some of the Cingular installers check the version of the current firmware and will refuse to install if it is not a Cingular version. So if you put ROW software on the phone you will have to jump through a couple of extra hoops to get it back to Cingular.

I'm not sure if some of the ROW installers also check. I know there are a few versions that don't check and that is why you sometimes have to install say version 1.21 before you can install some of the newer versions.

Then this update (1.17/1.51) would be the easiest to apply. In order to apply the Unlocked update (after it gets here), you'd have to apply one of the older unofficial Singapore updates (1.21 or 1.23), first .

Silly question (?) What is ROW?

Rest of World (meaning, unbranded & unlocked - not Cingular, Sprint, Verizon, etc).

Thanks for the help. I was able to do the update. It took a couple of hours and some errors, etc but got it done finally. I had to create a new user name and then couldn't get it to sync back to the original user name but finally did a hard reset and was able to get the correct user name to sync.
One thing I notice right off is that now the battery charge shows 100%. First time ever! It's always showed 99% no matter how long it charged.

I am enjoying the keyboard light adjustment! Also, when I first reset and restored everything I had about 4mb free whereas I has 12 before the upgrade. I deleted all the install programs that were left over, and even though they only amounted to a few hundred kb, I got all my space back.
    specifically what programs were those?

    I'm in the same boat.

sounds like the updater didn't clean up after itself when it was done so all the files used to perform the update were still on the phone

Do a hard reset when you're done with the update. You backup before you start, and *I* always hard reset before I start, then after. No questions that way.

One odd thing that is occurring (although not necessarily a bad thing) is that when my Treo crashes when the phone is on (after a crash, not a manual soft reset), the phone turns itself back on. Lightwav is the only program I have that turns the phone on after a soft reset but I don't have that feature enabled. Has this been the way the 650 has always worked? I always thought by default the phone would stay off after a soft reset, regardless of if it was caused by a manual soft reset or a crash

Edit -- don't have anything locked with Resco Locker either BTW at the moment.

Had my first spontaneous reset last night while the Treo was in my pocket (off), fatal exception caused by "Web"

This is what leads me to beleive it's a problem with the firmware not a third party app.

I beleive the resets are happening when the Treo is communicating with the network for some reason (calls, web, status etc.)

Agreed. Since I have CNB I wonder if I change the network select from Auto to Manual if it would make any difference? Maybe it's switching connections at random times which causes things to blow up?
