igz, have you tried to do a hard reset? Starting from scratch has major benefits.

So, I downgraded to the 1.06 (1.23) and that worked. Then I went to the 1.15 and it seemed to work. However, when I go to the info it says
    FW 1.31 and SW Treo650-1.06/9027/0...

When I try to go to 1.17, it tells me I can't and need to get the software for my version of the phone. I can see it probably never gets to the Cing 1.15 but can you give me some idea as to why and how can I fix it? Thanks.

You need to perform the 1.15 install again; your last one was incomplete.

I am a 10 year Palm OS user, been through my share of updates. Had to run this one 5 or 6 times this morning to get it to "take" which it finally did, but not until I had the "hangs at step 2 / static" issue, and even one "ROM not updated" At long last, all seems to be right. Now, lets see if the phone, firmware & software play nice together! Happy Thanksgiving. Locked Cingular branded Treo650 software 1.17, firmware 1.51 Hardware "A" In service March 05.

    Jeff
I am quite happy with the volume now from the front speaker and will no longer need Volumecare though it served me well while I had it.

In my opinion, Palm is limiting volume for a good reason - otherwise they would simply turn it up like VolumeCare. Perhaps is causes network problems - an over modulation or a feedback loop. Perhaps there are regulations with regards to loudness - remember the iPod restrictions in France. Perhaps the higher volume causes problems in the long term. Perhaps it's a battery life issue as the amplifier uses a lot more juice at higher volume. It seems unlikely that the volume would be lower than the amplifier is capable of unless the engineers thought it worthwhile to limit volume.

My bottom line is that you should be able to hear a phone properly - now I can with 1.17 so I'm happy.

This file is a temporary file used by the installer which hooks into HotSync Manager. I believe the way to get around this is to exit HotSync Manager from the tray item and then relaunch it from the Start menu.

If your HotSync is not working afterwards, I found that I couldd get it working again by removing the registry entry that referred to this notifier. Tread carefully in the registry if you decide to try this. You should only remove the onee notifier key that refers to this - the key has the name US Robotics in it. This method worked for me and I was able to run the installer again and also to HotSync normally.

So I am trying to do the update to 1.17 and following the directions exactly from Palm One website. It suggests creating a new user as a temporary user. To my total confusion, when i create a new user, the new user carries all my old conduit settings and try to resync everything from my old user name. Isn't the new user supposed to be blank?

Perhaps others have replied to your DTMF question. I DLd 1.17 yesterday and found the tone sequence much faster when inputting passwords.

Regrettably, for this upgrade, Palm is not recommending the
(Hotsync -> Hard Reset -> Hotsync with temporary username -> Do the upgrade -> Hard Reset -> Hotsync back to the original username).

    They should have.

Where did you see this on Palm's website?

Just did the 1.17 installation with no problems and with the Outlook conduit. Uninstalled the network hack, as advised, first. Used the hard reset, sync with a blank profile, install upgrade, hard reset, sync with original profile method. Everything went smoothly. Then installed the 1.17 network hack. Thank goodness for so many knowledgeable people on here that are willing to share their insights.

Hi DanInSD -- yep i've done multiple hard resets, and each time it's the same thing -- when it goes to upgrade the ROM it says there's not enough memory for the operation (there's some 20+ MB free) grr.

I noticed from your previous post that you have an unlocked Cingular Treo.

This 1.17 update will not work.

    Sure it will.

    Unless I'm missing something here.

It's not for "unbranded" Treo's. But an unlocked Cingular Treo is still a Cingular Treo.

Thanks - I called Palm support and the rep had me start over with the install. The install worked part way through and then ceased, but it did leave the PalmUpdate05.dll file in the PalmOne directory. Everything seems to be working fine now and I don't get any error messages.

The firmware upgrade went smoothly but my data was not restored. Thank god for BackupBuddy 2. I used the "zoom back" feature to get all my apps and settings back. I still had to reinstall Java to get Kmaps and Hourly 4cast to work. My main reason for installing the firmware was the hope that Handsfree Link in my Acura MDX would work better. Unfortuneatly, there has been no improvement. In addition, I still get the auto off reset to 30 seconds bug - guess I still need Stopdim. There is an improvement in volume, so I guess the hassle was marginally worth it.

No. The process should be something like this:
    1. Launch Palm Desktop
    2. From the menu, choose Tools/Users and click New
    3. Enter a new user name (do not use "temp")
    4. Click OK and close out Palm Desktop
    5. Download the update to your PC/Mac, run it and choose the new username as the recepient
    6. Hard reset your Treo 650, and Hotsync to the new username
    7. After applying the update on the Treo 650, hard reset and hotsync to your old username.

You da' man. I rebooted the PC and hard reset the Treo, it installed it again and gave the succeeded message and sure enough, all set. Thanks.

Well I did the upgrade and limited improvement with my issues.

I have a CNB Treo that I did the 1st Cingular/ATT upgrade on a few months ago. My issues were: low handset volume, DTMF tones that responded slow to the keypress and lasted too long, power-off being set to 30 sec. after a phone call.

The DTMF tone problem is definitly not fixed for me! The handset volume is the same but at least Volume Care fixes that. The power-off being set to 30 sec. seems to be fixed.

I installed the upgrade after doing a hard-reset on my Treo and then not restoring any backed up software just to be sure my problems weren't caused by any installed software.

I have been fortunate that my phone has been very stable with few resets or problems other than the above ones.

Does anyone know if the DTMF tone problem has been reported by anyone that is using a ROW ROM image? I'm thinking of installing that if it fixes this problem.

downloaded 1.17 and took 5 trys to gey it loaded. Had to call Palm and they had me make a new user and then it installed properly.

Don't know how the improvements will work yet.

I haven't been able to put my finger on the cause yet but I thought I'd at least throw this out there.

I seem to be getting a lot more spontaneous soft resets since upgrading to the Cingular 1.17 release.

I can't find a patern but it happened at least four times today. Once in Blazer, once when I was about to make a call, once while in my pocket (I heard the reset tone) and I can't recall the other two times. The device just soft resets all on it's on without warning.

I'm sure anything can be done about it (unless it's a third party app. which is now not playing well with the new firmware) but it's something to keep an eye on.
