So obvious in hindsight! I tried everything but that. I even called palm tech support! Our favorite overseas techies had no clue what I was talking about.

If you have a CNB phone, then you most likely have an old AT&T wireless SIM. AT&T wireless didn't disable the manual network selection in their SIM the way Cingular (old cingular/orange) does.
If you were to put a cingular Orange SIM in there (your Treo would need to be unlocked), you would most definately see the select network go away unless you install a hack.
In other words this is a function of the SIM, not the phone software version.
Actaully to clearify, it's a bit (instruction) set in the SIM that instructs the phone to disable manual network selection and only Cingular orange uses it.
Put a Cingular SIM in any version Treo and the select network will hide. Put an old AT&T wireless SIM (or T-Mobile SIM) in any version Treo, and select network will still be there.
If I'm wrong and you have a Cingular (orange) SIM, then you truly did stuble across a welcome bug in the CNB software.

OK finally got a DL that seemingly was working. Trasferred everything to the 650. At the very last step, the Treo puts up an error message that says "Error updating ROM". Treo reverts to the menu screen, and I'm still at 1.15-CNG.

    Help anyone?

I tried updating about 6-7 times. I would either get the Static message and the updater would stop ... or the updater would look like everything was working, then at the end I would get the error "Error Updating ROM", with no other explanation.

Finally, I tried nixoloco's suggestion above (Thanks nixoloco!). Worked like a charm. Only variation I did was to let the updater finish. Here are the steps I did. Again, having a backup to SD is critical.

    1. Went to the palmOne folder. Renamed the folder for my device sync.

    2. Did a hard reset on the Treo 650.

    3. Ran the Treo updater. When it asked for my device ID, I entered "tempid".

    4. When updater was complete, I restored my device using my backup program (Resco backup).

    5. The updater then asked me to do a final hotsync. I didn't cancel the Updater at this point. Since my backup contained my original device hotsync, I just ran the hotsync as the updater asked. It created the device folder in my palmOne folder.

    Now running 1.17.

I am not so sure it is a function of the SIM. The reason is I have an unlocked Samsung D600 and it shows 1. Cingular 2. Cingular Extend 3. Tmobile in the network selection list. I also have an unlocked Nokia N70 and it shows the networks as well although they are not displayed like the Samsung.

There is an "After the Update" link on the download page. This includes a troubleshooting section. In that section there is reference to the Error updating ROM message. Does that fix the issue?

In order to move to 1.15 CNG, you'll need to move to Treo650-1.06.../1.23, first (commonly called 1.23).

I noticed since the upgrade the following "feature":

When I miss a call, the YOU MISSED A CALL screen now has an additional button "Send SMS".

You're right, I did a reverse migration back to AT&T and totally forgot about the change in SIM cards.

Thanks, Bill. Obviously the 1.15CNG update was unsuccessful (I just tried it). I'll update to 1.06 first. I presume I'll be able to go all the way up to 1.17CNG after the 1.06 downgrade?

    Bill.

I've looked for 1.06 and couldn't find a link. Can you give me one?

    Thanks a ton.

And this isn't SharkMsg doing this? If not, I guess SharkMsg shamed P1 into doing what they said (during the 700w announcement) wasn't possible on the 650.

    Bill,

I found it. Sorry about that. (I was an ***** and was looking for 1.06 even after you said it was commonly called 1.23!)

this is only working on "You missed a call".

Shark message is a pop-up that appears when you IGNORE a call and offers preset message options.

BTW- Lightwav Pro is also adding a similar feature

Yea, sorry. I posted and tested in the wrong order. It does seem odd they'd add this feature only to missed calls unless they hadn't thought of the SharkMsg functionality when they put it in.
