Any clues on whether we can install Ubuntu Touch Preview on the touchpad begin Feb 21? Says will be able to install on Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4, "we love the tablet" etc.

I like the touchpad hardware a lot and still use webOS every day, lunace version, but the browser lack of functionality is slowly destroying the experience for me. Hope we can get something going on the touchpad besides android, I have no need to buy yet another tablet with a 1st gen kindle fire and ipad also sitting around, I just need my 2 touchpads to be more functional.

Touch Developer Preview of Ubuntu to be published on 21 February 2013 | Canonical

Looks like on the 21st it will be Galaxy Nexus (Samsung) and Nexus 4 (LG) phones only, but they will try to expand the compatibility list as the year rolls on...

I think they (Canonical) will aim at more current hardware than the TP... Just a guess.

So then the question becomes if any Developers here will attempt a port.

@RumoredNow: But we might see it from the community. We currently have a native port of Ubuntu 12.10 and 13.04 on the HP Touchpad thanks to devs at XDA-developers and 13.04 is working fine in dual-boot here.

I would like clarification on the drivers. If the HP touchpad drivers are closed source will that make it not possible to install any other port on the touchpad than android?

@bluenote: Like I said: we have Ubuntu running natively on the Touchpad thanks to XDA devs. Everything works, from bluetooth to wifi to 2D acceleration. So what are you trying to say?

Finally found an article in-house...

Canonical delivers Ubuntu Touch for tablets | Android Central

Nexus 7 and 10 tablets targeted as well...

I guess I was thrown off by the links in the article bluenote brought in the OP. It will be interesting to see if the Tablet and Phone versions are one.

I believe the chance would be dubious, at best...

The Touch Developer Preview of Ubuntu will be published on the 21st February 2013 with installation instructions for the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablet devices as well as smartphones such as the Nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus. Installable images and source code will be available from developer.ubuntu.com.

Perhaps it can re-compiled for the HP Touchpad.

Again: we have a WORKING 13.04 alpha of Ubuntu with working bluetooth, wifi et all so why wouldn't those same devs be interested in porting over Ubuntu Touch? It's open source and could be based on the same 13.04 kernel we currently have for the Touchpad 13.04 alpha.

Because it is a tablet/phone OS not a desktop OS. Touch is such a different interface than mouse that it would make sense to port it over.

What's the onscreen keyboard experience like on the current "Working" v13.04 of ununtu on the touchpad?

uses a well setup 'onboard' setup, even setup well for the login screen, easily enabled/dibled from notification area/icon.

hp bluetooth and other keyboards work as do mice.

Porting Ubuntu Touch is as Simple as Building CM – xda-developers

"...Since Ubuntu Touch is just a CyanogenMod 10.1 base with the Ubuntu Touch interface running in a container and accessed via*chroot, if your device currently runs CM10.1 then youíll be able to port this. The instructions for porting are found on Ubuntuís Wiki*and are quite extensive, so make sure you follow them EXACTLY..."

You don't even get what I said. I said that those devs MIGHT port it over for us. So basically you're just agreeing with what I said.

Ubuntu Touch works on the Touchpad. Take it with a grain of salt. It's unstable, but that's par for the course. Check it out. Translate if necessary...
