oh, me too. I really like the Vx (in fact, now that i've owned my visor since last november, i've looked at how i use my visor and the Vx would work just as well for me (i only use my modem occasionally and the V/Vx modem is elegant, and i use my stowaway, which also exists for the V/Vx model). I've decided that my next PDA will definately have a metal case (body) and unless this new StrongArm makes my jaw drop, i'll basically be using my PDA for organizational apps, datebook, toDo, etc. (like i do now) and contacts.

So unless Handspring's next offering is in a metal case, when my current Visor dies on me, I'm heading the Vx route.

    But that's for my requirements.
wow, it's been awhile.....things have REALLY changed...why is my Visor Edge still in my hand? Will a Treo fit better?

    Brief article posted here

    http://www.insanely-great.com/news/00/8/31-sonypda.html

says The Clie is not compatible with Mac Unix, Linux, WinNT or Windows 95.

Curious limitation if you ask me.

So i finally got down to the local Best Buy and took a look at the Clie and the M100. WOW!

The M100 is neat right at first glance...there's nothing too new under the hood (as you all know) but i can see how this thing will appeal to first time PDA purchasers. It is impressively nice to hold. The size was nice.

The Clie was VERY impressive. I like the jog dial and the SIZE!!! oh my god!! and there's a colour version coming??? I compared it to the Vx and it was amazing. I don't think Palm or Handspring have an excuse when the topic of colour in a small device comes up. If sony pulls this off it'll be VERY cool. I was 3 heartbeats from pulling out the Visa card and buying the monochrome Clie. They had memory sticks (32MB) selling for $79.

Shortly after christmas i'll be in the market to upgrade my visor....i can't wait to see Palm's and Handspring's response to the Clie.

oh ya...I DIDN"T realize how small those memory sticks are!!! everybody keeps saying 'size of a stick of chewing gum'...I'd say HALF that...(picturing Wrigley's Spearmint stick in my mind...) those things are TINY!

I have renewed faith in the PDA world. I'm excited to see what unfolds in the next 6 - 8 months!

(I also looked at the Compaq I-Paq deal....impressive)

    Hey Hoser,

You aren't jumping ship are you?
To be honest I haven't seen the Clie yet (don't think they sell them out here yet) but I was thinking of getting a digital camera. Sony has a nice one with MemoryStick If I get that one it might be tempting to go for a clie too (providing it has a colorscreen...)

I had a chance to play with a CLIE at the local CompUSA. I only had a couple of minutes, but I have to admit I was favorably impressed. The form factor is nice, and the jog dial feature is fantastic. It's not quite nice enough to make me give up my Deluxe, particularly since there doesn't appear to be many peripherals using the memory stick yet. However, Sony bears watching in this space - I think they could give HS and Palm a real run for their money.

The CLIE may be thinner, but the height and width dimensions look like a Palm III form factor. People are willing to shell out big bucks for the Palm V/Vx because it's not only thinner, but smaller all around. You can really put it in your shirt pocket, unlike Palm IIIs and Visors. Thinness by itself won't cut it, as one of the Compaq Aeros (can't remember the model numer) demonstrated.

As for playing the M100 card, there are a lot of reasons for that product's disapproval (hideous form factor, smaller screen, etc.) as opposed to, say, the Palm IIIxe. I still think that most people buy PDAs -- even expensive ones -- as organizers, not as conversation pieces.

The Clie (KLEE-ay) is actually thicker than a palm Vx, But it is skinnier than a palm Vx and about the same height maybe shorter. The big bucks ain't really that big anymore with retail price @ $349 with a $50 rebate and a free leather case rebate

As for the m100 i own one and i dont see any disaproval of it in society and what'd u mean by hideous form factor? its about the same size as a palm V granted a little thicker, also the smaller screen isn't that bad, you get bigger font sizes if it is a problem for you but ain't no prob for me, the screen is actually clearer with pictures because the pixels are closer together

I Suggest next time you go bashing a product get your fact RIGHT, and oh yeah here a quote for ya

I actually like the CLIE that also stands for Communication Link Information Entertainment, I think it was a good move for sony to includ an 8MB stick, you CAN run gMedia File from a MS you can also view pictures directly of it

If anyone has seen the Matchbook idrive how you have to copy files using FAfile mover, i dont see people saying that it sux, i know this is a visor board so it is Biased, anything visor related get's praising.

it felt good to get that off my chest

You're right to correct me on the dimensions, but I still think it's overpriced. On the latter point the market seems to agree.

You've resurrected a 5-month-old thread. At the time my comment was posted, many reviews on the m100 were negative. The prevailing wisdom among pundits at the time was that it would fail. They were wrong, and so was I. For the record, I also predicted the Palm V and the iMac would be failures, so don't treat me as if I were the oracle at Delphi. But yes, I think the form factor is hideous.

Some people think the size difference between the Palm V and its competitors is exaggerated. I'm not one of them. I haven't seen pictures on an m100, but your observation about the pixel density enhancing the picture quality sounds reasonable -- an interesting point I hadn't thought of.

What fact are you referring to? My comment about the m100's "disapproval"? Notice that I specifically used the word "disapproval" in the post; that was a reference to the reviews, as well as numerous posts (again, at the time) here and on other sites like Slashdot, CNET, PDABuzz, etc. It wasn't a reference to the sales, which were unknown at the time since it was a new product.

If anyone has seen the Matchbook idrive how you have to copy files using FAfile mover, i dont see people saying that it sux, i know this is a visor board so it is Biased, anything visor related get's praising.
If you haven't seen the numerous complaints, then clearly you need to spend more time reading these boards. But I personally couldn't care less about memory expansion. I've still got 5MB left on my Visor, and I'm not planning on getting TealMovie anytime soon.

it felt good to get that off my chest
I prefer Tums in similar situations, but if belated responses on old discussion threads do the trick, more power to you.

I think someone was expecting Clie color to be out soon, but don`t expect too much. I was reading some Japanese magazines and most of them are talking about color Clie, which available in Japan already, being so dim, and it`s 256 colors, not 65,000 like Prism. Think it as Palm lllc in Clie body. Other than that, it`s same as b&w Clie.
    Just FYI...
