Well, I finally did it! I got a PPC!! I saw a deal on the X50v that I could pas up: $369 USD via coupon posted over at bargainpda. I've been seeing the price intermittantly dip below 400 bucks for a couple weeks now and I just couldn't pass up the chance to grab one of these beauties when I had the chance. I've been in palmos land for a very loooong time, so it's gonna be wierd feeling like a newbie, but I figure I had to make the jump since there literally were no other traditional non-smartphone palmos pda's that I was interested in. This is a huge deal for me since I've been a fervant palmos users for a very long time, but a change will be nice. Anyway, so now the great adventure begins so to speak! I just ordered the device, so I'll probably get in within a week or so and I'll post my impressions as well (if you're interested of course).

Cool....Welcome to the other half of the world!

I am interested in your first impression. I have never played much with the X50v myself, but have heard from others that it is the best PDA they have ever had, hands down.

If there is anything we can help you with, just let us know.

well gfunk, it took you long enough. to really impress yourself (and make yourself feel ashamed you used a crap 160x160 treo 600 for so long) search google for betaplayer, download it and the matrix 640x480 trailer from it's website. then, be impressed. betaplayer is the best media player i've seen, hands down. even more impressive, it's free.

then, if you have a tv tuner card, search for a program called beyond tv and download it (21 day trial). start streaming tv to your handheld, from anywhere. i've recently started using it on Sprint, and can't wait to be even more impressed when evdo gets rolled out.

    other programs to note:

audio : gsplayer (streaming audio, .ogg, FREE)

Agile messenger (icq, msn, yahoo, aim, FREE)

    PocketWeather (free)

MorphGear (emulator, certain plug ins free)

last but not least, try using the handwriting recognition (letter recognizer or transcriber) with wm2003se. i never thought i'd use the stylus for writing emails or msgs but it had improved a lot over the past OS' and i am quite impressed. i believe the x50v has built in wifi so i would like to hear your wifi speeds range. the only big disappointment i see so far with the ppc-6601 is that the sd wifi card speeds are only around 50k max i haven't been able to get around this, but i only have 2 routers and a Socket SD Wifi card. if you know anything about this, i'd love to hear it.
    good luck and congrats!

ps the only thing you might have wished for in the x50v is more ram. i still can't get over having over 90megs available for programs/storage

I have yet to test my new 6601, but my last one was pretty similar to the speeds this SprintUsers.com member posted with my Socket Wifi card:

Very nice. I asked for a high end PPC and Santa brought me a Ipaq HX4705 for Christmas. The x50v was my other choice. Check out www.aximsite.com for answers to your PPC questions. So far my must have software additions are:

    Resco File Explorer
    Netfront
BetaPlayer - excellent, free media player

    Good luck.

Can the new PPC IE handle streaming media (i.e. Espn Motion clips) or does it require some sort of plug in?

Also, gfunk: since you are not converged what will you be using as your 'phone'?

um i have a 650 and an Ipaq hx4700- and i feel more converged! i am pretty sure that the treo 650 and a high end windows mobile pda is a great way to go about. i tend to have my treo all the time and the ipaq only the times i'm at work or if i plan to need it for an impromptu meeting... so i dont need all the features of my ipaq all the time, but my treo holds my PIM and email and instant messenging- the ipaq does note taking and gps navigation and movie watching and mp3 playing.

pocket pc ie doesn't support streaming natively (at least i dont think so) but if you copy the url and put it into a media player such as betaplayer it will work.

You could have all that and more with one of the PPC phone, and be trully converged. I'm nt pushing any particular PPC phone, but I tried PPC6601 and now I have an SX66 with built-in Wifi. Both are great. I eventually chose the SX66 because it is an unlocked GSM device. This way I can leave it at home and pop my SIM into my Moto v551 when I'm mall hopping, jogging, etc.

it does support streaming video, provided its in a mms:// format. meaning, if the link you click on starts with mms:// instead of http:// it should work. however, if its a 300k or 500k stream, good luck (unless you have verizon evdo). i've been streaming my cable tv to my device and it works pretty well.

The right move with the right device. I'll recommend ListPro, Pocket Informant, and UBook, though you'll find that the built-in apps are excellent.
You may be right; I may be crazy. But, the Treo may be just the device I've been looking for.

Thanks hobbes for the links! I'll defintely have to check them out! I actualy JUST gto my X50v TODAY almost 2 weeks after ordering the damn thing! Took them long enough, but so far I'm very impressed with the looks of the lthing. Very solid and not that much bigger than my 650. Will report back later with more pics and questions!

In the mean time I have to read a gazillion threads over at aximsite to get up to speed on my new toy!

Hehe... again tx for the info. Also, I was looking into the pocketpctechs upgrade for the ram, but it was too pricey for my blood. I think right now, I'll have to save up for an extended battery for the X50v...

Well, right now I plan on using both my Treo 650 and the Axim X50v. I have the PWK and need to find the PPC drivers to make it work with the x0v. Also need to get BT gps combo that will work with both deviices, perhaps the Tom Tom? Anyway, I have lots to learn!

gfunkmagic, how's your Axim X50v? Brief likes, dislikes, screen res, WiFi and BT performance, etc.

I'm thinking of going that route if I don't replace my SX66 once UPS picks it up. For now, I'm enjoing hi speed WiFi, and slow speed GPRS. But this puppy gotta go cuz my BT stack got messed up after the Siemens' Firmware update.

Hobbes, I downloaded and ran BT3900 patch from the PDA2K forum. It works for SX66, helps some, but not enough for me to remain happy. I need an EDGE capable fully-converged device if I wanna stay with Cingular. Maybe the HS6500 when Cingular gets it.

gfunk...I use the iTrek BT GPS unit with iGuidance on my 6600 and love it. But I am not sure how it will work on the Palm. The big catch here is, as you mentioned, first to find a BT unit that works with both handhelds....and then find software that works with that GPS unit and that you don't have to buy twice, for both Palm and PPC.

The best place to find all these answers that I don't have is where I went when I was in buying.....GPSpassion. They have a great forum with good support from the mod.
