I have been bouncing back and forth in my head between the two phones for some time now. I love my 600 and with the 650 form factor being the same it just seemed to be a logical upgrade. I have been following the bluetooth fixes done by Shadowmite and have been impressed by the whole community coming together to fix what should have already been taken care of before release...but then again, the 660x already has these issues taken care of. The 650 has a better size and feel for holding to my face to use as a phone...but a BT headset (which I would probably use for 80% of my calls) negates that advantage. Landscape mode on the 660x makes me giddy. I "hear" the keyboard isn't up to 650 par on 660x, but it gets the job done...and it is at least a keyboard. (Can't go back to a keyboardless phone ever now.) Voice Command is "The cats pajamas" so I am sure I will like that (cats are cool). So this all had me leaning hard to the 660x side until I read a thread in the 650 forum where Shadowmite is once again working on a bit-o-software...a today program. Now that in itself didn't really make me go wow...I think the 660x has a nice program by default, the "wow" came when I thought about the fact that a user, a "treo central family member" sort of speak, is listening to his peers and creating software based on what they all would like to see. Keycaps, Butler, my favorite map software which I can't think of the name of, but don't know how I am going to live without if I do go 660x, and various other programs that I use so much that I feel they are default programs...all made by users to help other users. My fear, or question I should say, is does the PPC community have active and friendly developers and a website where they meet? (And if so, can they move here? I love the forums here.) I am not sure if it would be worth losing the creativity found in the palm community for a "change of phone styles". Any thoughts are welcomed!

I will try my best to answer your questions:

Keyboard: I personally really like the keyboard layout. Sure it is different than the treo and does take a little getting use to, but once you do the logic to the layout is very sound. It does have "nubs" instead of actual buttons, but have never found this to be a challenge in the least.

The advantage of the sliding keyboard is that it is not always exposed. The disadvantage of the sliding keyboard is that is is not always exposed. All depends on the situation, but the more I use it the more I appreciate the additional screen real estate while having the keyboard a slid away.

FORM FACTOR: The treo has the best form factor hands down....but at a price. The 660x has a larger screen with landscape mode (which is REALLY nice when surfing the web or spreadsheets, etc..).

Software Available: I was always under the assumption that the Palm had a lot more programs available for it becuase of it's tight and dedicated community, but I know feel that was an illusion to a large degree. I now think that the PPC has more (or at least often times more developed) main application solutions. There are some a lot fewer programs available for Palm that are not available for PPC than the other we around.

The total page is default in the OS on PPC. There are more PPC mapping / GPS opportunities with the PPC than Palm.

Software Development Community: I must say the Palm no doubt has more hacks and OS utillities, or at least ones that are easy to use....many of which I do miss, i.e. lights, keycap, profiles, etc... due to a greater presence of comuunity based software developers vs commercial. But with that said, there is some level of many of those utilities available for the PPC. For example Keycaps was one of my favorite...even though the PPC does not have anything I have found to match it, the OS does provide a list of what the word is you are tryping to type which can really help speed up typing.

PPC Community: There is a good PPC community.....even here at this forum at TC! A lot of us former Treo users still hang out here because we love the enviroment and community. We also hang out at out forums dedicated to the PPC or 660x....PDAphoneHome (one of my favorites), SprintUsers.com, Hofo, and PocketPCthoughts.

Bluetooth: BT on the PPC provides more opportunities than does the 650, which was crippled. I use mine with a BT keyboard, BT travel mouse, BT iTrek GPS, BT with my laptop...all without a lick of problems. The only issue with the 660x BT is with headsets. But this has been addressed by users to resolve most of these issues while we wait for the official update. More info here: Link to BT fix

Conclusion: After being on both sides of the fence, I can say that I honestly like both. You have evaluate your needs and wants as both can suite the needs of the individual nicely, depending on your needs. But if I was going to have to choose the one that offers the most road warrior power between the Treo and the PPC-6600....I would have to choose the PPC-6600 due to it's features and to the OS with application options.

there is actually a "today" program for the treo - if gives you calendar and appt notifications, along with unread emails. it also can do 4-5 shortcut buttons on the bottom of the screen. i used it quite often on my treo 600. i didnt like it as much as ppc's today screen, but ppc today has many more options, plus a great program called SPB Plus gives even more options and control over the wm2003se interface. however, you seem to like the treo form factor and keys. i have gotten used to the 660x keyboard but - it took me over a week! that for me was a long time. i'm still not as fast as i was on the treo, and i wasnt as fast then as i was on my blackberry 957.
as for forums, yes there are quite a few, especially because there is an array of ppc's out there. a lot of us ex-treo users goto pdaphonehome.com along with the xda ii developers forum (which if someone would post, i'd be grateful since its not in my current history).
as for being on the fence, you have to think what do you REALLY want. for me, i needed a larger screen with better resolution than my treo 600. i needed to have a good amount of memory. i really was getting tired of no being able to "multi task" without closing a program. i hated if i were to be in irc on the treo, everytime i left the program it would disconnect. same goes for vnc for palmOS. i also wanted the ability to play wmv and mpg4, etc, with a stable program that didnt cost money. the ppc OS provided that to me (yes, i paid for mmplayer on t600 but i did not have a good friendship with it) and the 660x fit the bill. also, i like the browser in ppc - its light years faster than the browser in the 600 (i even used web pro and the java one). plus internet formatting a webpage is faster too.
now for me, i can live wth the temporary bugs the 660x has right now. while bt support is being updated constantly with new builds, the original was kinda crappy for bt handsfree devices. then again, i bought cheap ones under $75
the beep of death wasn't often enough to send it back (i made sure to disconnect from sprint vision before outgoing calls) so for me - its pretty decent. plus wifi is a blast if you get a wifi card. there are a few things i miss such as the very nice 5 way the treo had, and the fantastic program known as verichat that would send msgs via sms. for some reason, verichats ppc version of im client is horrible! i miss msgs and get disconnected without it reconnecting. same goes for agile. great design but...where are my msgs? there should be an auto reconnect to im client if i get disconnected , but if there is, it works poorly.
i also miss pocket tunes deluxe. while i can stream mp3s and shoutcast for FREE with gsplayer for ppc os, i still liked tunes deluxe, for some reason. both support .ogg fyi, which is nice.
if you like the treo, either get the 650 or wait for the next version. for me it had come to the point where i was so sick and tired of waiting for a web page to load or havng it reset on me when a call would come in. it got to the point where i could no longer send email or make a phone call without being plugged in. while this is not palmOS related, it got me so frustrated that i was waiting for something better.
however, that it not to say the treo was unreliable. i relied on it quite often, and more than once it provided map instructions when i was lost. if you like the form factor, go with the treo. the 660x may be too large for you! i am still eager to see these 2.8 " screens some of the newer ppc os' have -and if i could cope with that instead of this large 3.5". i do love being able to watch movies and tv shows on it. to me it has become the complete multimedia solution. i just wish it was offered in black in the states.
but back to one of your original questions, yes we afre a friendly bunch of newly coverted ppc users. there are forums. but just as it is here, once the debate on which os or which phone is better, all hell breaks loose so i try to not participate in those discussions. i like my phone but undoubtedly there will be better ones out there. hopefully with as much ram
    good luck in your decision!

See that's my other issue...I am a cheapskate (which I guess isn't accurate considering I plan on spending $600 for a phone), but the point is, free software makes me smile. Directory Assitant is the name of the "mapping" program I was thinking of...yeah I know it is just a frontend to mapquest, but it does so much more. Anyway, I guess its an issue of do I really need the other software that made the 600 so user friendly, or does the 660x come friendly out of the box? I am pretty sure most of Butler is not needed on the 660x and I can manage to hit shift to make caps if I have to. But are there any apps like DA for PPC? I would even pay.

I do not own either and am gobbling up all the info that gets passed back and forth about Palm OS and PPC. I too am on the fence of which way to go, however I do not have an attachment to either as of yet. I fiddle around with my fiance's Tungsten E, but nothing about it draws me to HAVE to go with that OS. I like the look, convenience (styli/touch screen/5-way/Qwerty), and size of the treo 600-650. But I think I am more drawn to PPC. I guess if the rumors are true about a treo 700 with PPC, that would be the perfect device for me. I also need it to run on Cingular network and look like a combo device. I was leaning toward PPC on MPx220, but I think I need a larger screen and more convenient navigation options.

This is great, Hobbes. You're probably my favorite non TreoLander

I looked at the PPC 6601, and I liked it a lot. Bt the price tag was too steep. Unless Cingular offers it with a $150-200 instant rebate like Sprint PCS and affiliaties I would not jump fences.

I still have a couple of days to shop around and return my T650 if I have to. Any hot deals out there on a 6601 or similar PPC phones?

Btw, Hobbes, great review by you at http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/foru...ic.php?t=35917

Since there is nothing good being said about the Treo here on this post. I will be the first. Can we get over the which device is best post please! The PPC has some features which the Treo can never do, screen size, windows integration, more polished software. But donít through the treo in the trash heap yet. The Treo has some features that the PPC can not do. Screen size, keyboard, creativity and originality. I know that there are several MS phones coming out that will do this or that but the bottom line is the Treo leads and others follow. No One has equaled the Treo keyboard to date - period. No product has matched the Treo keyboard/OS/Phone integration on a pocket size device. Its plain Brilliant. Match this with above average battery life and a screen that will almost display your DNA. The Treo is a winner not a looser!
When the dust settles I think we will find that the large majority of users want a clean integrated device which will be a phone, calendar, reminder, game platform and alarm clock. The Treo does this and a lot more. The PPCs will also meet a certain type of user who may be less a phone user and more a a data centrist looking more the the tool features of the device. Apples v. Microsoft; Russia v. USA, Euro v $ no maybe not that extreme I think the Truck v SUV is the best analogy
So buy both and keep the economy going strong.

Just try both of them for an extended period and make your own decision. Asking the folks on this board is not going to get you a true unbiased response - the TreoLovers will say it's the best, and the PPCLovers will say it's the best. Your needs and your requirements are just that - yours. What I like may have no relevance to you, and my opinions may be complete BS to you.
All the new devices coming out are strong in some areas, less so in others - just depends on what you want. Some folks want a big screen, a more PDA-ish experience. For them, perhaps a BlueAngel is best. Others may want a smaller form factor, less PDA-ish experience. Just depends. Hard to take the opinions of a small sampling and apply them to you, or me, or anyone. I mean - walk into a Chevy dealership and say.."hmm, I dunno. Do you guys think these Corvettes are really ALL that nice?"

Try them both for a couple of weeks, then decide. Just like buying a car - you wouldn't make that decision just by asking folks. Too many variables.

    Good luck.

G.711.....I don't think anyone was trashing the 650. The original question was focused on the benefits and concerns of switching to the PPC-660x and that is how many us answered.

Nearly every post stated I like this or that, but both are good and choose the one right for you.

As I have always said, I think anyone trying to decide these two should try them out....or at the very least make a list of all the cons and pros for each device. Decide which pros you cannot live without and with cons you cannot live witih....then make your decision.

This was far from a which is best type of post. In a nut shell I was asking if there was indeed a forum of people who developed software for "fun" and usefulness for the PPC community as they do for the palm peeps. I do appreciate everyone elses views on their favorite devices and the answers to my questions as well. So far, I still find THIS board to be the best source for 660x talk still (thanks "real"). I think I am sold on the 660x no matter what the end software results are...too much windows functionality for me to not buy it I believe (I am in the IT field and it just has the needed "geek" factor.)

I currently have a PDA2k, (had it since late october) I do love the multitasking OS, huge screen, no antenna, wifi, and built-in memory/storage space. This only thing I dislike is the bluetooth headset issues... even with the latest patches there are still distance issues (can't go over 3ft from the phone without hearing crackeling, static etc... and you can't slip the phone in your pocket and talk on the bt headset without hearing the same thing) There are also a dozen or two people on the Imate forum experiencing 'lack of sound' when calling people. This only seems to happen after the latest ROM update, and only a few times a week. I'm not sure if everyone who updated to the latest ROM is experiencing this, as I only know from first-hand experience, and from reading the Imate forum. A lot of people have downgraded to the old ROM, and thus resolved this issue. In all honestly, they only thing that makes me consider the Treo 650 over a Blue Angel device is the fact the 650 will support EDGE on a GSM network, and I also like its SMS client a lot more than anything I've used on the PPC. Other than that, the small screen, non-sliding keyboard, no wifi, exposed antenna, and out-dated operating system really turns me off. Even though I listed more cons than I did pros please don't think I completely agree that you should choose a BA over the 650... I'm still battling the decision... and it will be even harder once the 650 gsm comes out with a super-low 1yr contract price.

Personally, I never liked the 600 keyboard.

And I wouldn't call myself a PPC lover, nor was I a Palm lover.

Is it a 'guy thing,' getting all tribal about which device/os is the best? I've never seen such craziness, excpet teenagers arguing over which rock band is the best. I don't thing MS nor Palm employess would get so protective.

    Just having some fun.

    So what's your point?

We're basically talking about two types of OS in pda/phones. Palm and MS, no? That seems to be the dividing line here...

Anyway, I like 'em both. I just don't see palm/treo improving on what they have. That's all...
