Every time someone calls something a treo killer, they are saying the Treo is the best of what's around. I love it. :-)

Interesting thread about the one-handed operation. I haven't used a PPC, but how can you quickly search 5,000 contacts without the quick keyboard look-up? Scroll through it with a navigation button? Pick a letter of the alphabet and scroll through that? I just don't see how an interface can do that nearly as well as the Treo. I can get to anything with about three key presses to dial.

Please don't bring up voice recognition, unless it's good enough to handle 5,000 contacts flawlessly (i.e. 100% accuracy, I never want to call the wrong person because my phone didn't understand me) without training.

The T650 has been on the market for a very short time, and only by one carrier thus far, and you've got "Treo Killers" out there? Sounds like some people have too much time on their hands.

I originally wanted to keep the clam shell (folding) form, like my former Kyocera 7135, but could not find phones with all the features offered by T650, and a data access plan as cheap as SPCS.

The unlimited data plan rate of $15/M with Sprint is unbeatable. Try $79.95, $49.95, and $29.95 respectively for Cingular, Verizon, and Tmoble.

None of the problems with the T650 being cried about here are unsolvable, or deal breakers. I see solutions (ROM patches) being posted here by users like shadowmite long before palmone or sprint get to them. This tells me that the user community is not dead. I think I'll keep my T650 CDMA with SprintPCS, despite the massive incompetence I personally experieced with Sprint tech support.

TreoCentral has been an eye opener for me. I don't plan to make a carrer out of setting up my T650, or posting replies here. But I will continue to read and learn.

Umm, no. It's entirely too much fun.

There are plenty of pictures of the i730 with the keyboard open. There are also lots of people who played with them. The phone seems to be bottom heavy, not top heavy when the slide is open.

    Cingular is $19.99, FYI.

Nevertheless, this COULD be a good phone for some people but...

    A number of definite issues:

    *Lower res screen

*Bigger than 650 -- especially when open

*Slider devices have a spotty track record on how well the slider holds up

*No keyboard access when slider closed. limits one handed use

*Looks like hard to hold when open especially for one-handed use. Very likely topheavy

*Windows -- Although Windows does some things well or even better than Palm, its still not as easy to use for the vast majortity of what you need to do with a smartphone. Things that are one-step/one-handed on a Treo are multiple step with stylus on Windows devices.

*Thought you HATED external antennas Ocean, LOL

In addition a number of Serious Concerns:

*First report was in November, no announcement of availability or carrier or price yet

*Nobody has actually seen the thing working. If it was around in November, why not charged up version in January? (I find it interesting when they say its an "excellent" phone when they haven't even turned it on!)

*No photos allowed of it with keyboard open at the Jan show. Why? Especially since the November article had photos of it opened up. Is there a problem with the keyboard? Copyright infringment? Redesign?

*Again NO PRICE. The benQ has quoted at $800 that would kill the killer right there.

HEY, it's my old pal midmofan! I see you've missed me. I missed you too, and bmcfarland too. What would you guys do without me? (Don't answer that!) Anyway, wanna hear something that will really make you two, and some other fans of mine, laugh your a**es off? The firm I work for announced yesterday that they will be providing all of the lawyers with shiny new Treo 650's! I almost fell out of my chair with shame! I tried to dissuade the senior partner, but he was not having it. He is a long time Palm user and is too old to try something different, regardless of how much BETTER it is! So, after all my complaining, screaming, bit**ing and moaning about this freaking device you call the Treo 650, I HAVE to get one for me to use at work!!!!!!!!

Go ahead, laugh it up, I can hear you already... That's okay, one day I will move out into my own law firm, and my PDA of choice will NOT use PALM OS!!!!!!! Until then, what's your favorite Treo app?

    Ocean18,

I can tell you one thing my treo has that the Jam doesnt.

    ......a keyboard.

More than you could ever imagine. Floods, firestorms, busloads of nuns running into stagecoaches full of orphans.

Easy..just like on the 650....on the 660x, just hit the contact button, type in the first letters of the name on the physical keyboard, and hit the 5 way nav okay button. Unless it is really tight on that specific phone, the keyboard is easy to slide open handed. My screen is cracked, so I cannot use the screen for a lot of stuff, so I do it all the time.

As for the voice command, it has never called anyone else by mistake with me. You just say the name and what phone to call. For example "Call John Smith on mobile". It will ask you "Call John Smith on Mobile. Correct?". If it's not, say "No. Call Call John Smith on mobile" again for it to get it to find the right one. If it is correct, which it is around 98% for me, you just say "Yes". And then it calls....all without training.

The other cool thing about VC is you can use it launch applications. So when I want to read an article with Express. I just say "Open Express". No nav'ing at all.

The latest update published last week will also read the caller ID, which is really nice while driving!

But if you don't like VC, no problem. You can use the 5 way nav to launch an app, just like you would on a Palm with a OS interface program like Silverscreen or Zlauncher. No stylus.

The 650 has voice command software available as well.

Yup...and I heard it works pretty good too...though I have not seen it in action yet myself or know all that it can do.

Read the paragraph above the rates on the link you provided, it is for tethering your laptop to your PDA for web access, not accessing the web on the PDA. The MEdia Works plan is what you are looking for.

All this talk about treo killers can really mean only 1 thing, the treo is a market leader...
The harder people try to find this treo killer, the more they point out that fact, kind of ironic isnt it?

This machine looks nice, but the keyboard looks a bit fragile to me...
And I am biased to POS, but that is a personal preference..
I see it as another PDA-phone and hope it makes its users happy..

Treo central doesn't know jack about PPC. It's the type of clueless place that keeps spinning for handspring until suddenly realizes nobody cares about the handheld they spin.

it happens with visor, it will happen with treo again. Treocentral fails to give honest feedback and actually helping handspring believing their own marketing BS.

so, mark my word, by the end of 2005. treo is about as alive as visor during the introduction of iPAQ. Visor central was so busy spinning and believing their own spin, everybody forget to see if visor is alive or not.

    treo:
    -no wifi
    -old OS
-no new and exciting advance apps.
-rehash of old handheld (it comes from one hit wonder company. whaddya expect?)
    -plenty of bugs
    -still using odd screen ratio

except it happens in the very center of treo fan site.
that makes a difference. (ie. the fans are already craving for next big thing, and treo fails to give it)

Fans/fanatics allways crave for the next big thing, nature of the beast isn't it?
But I have seen this 'treo-killer' label on other sites too..

To be honest I don't care much about it, whenever it is time to get a new PDA, I pick whatever suits my needs best..

You can see the same thing elsewhere. People labling stuff an "iPod killer." Though I would never use an iPod (Rio Carbon and some no-name flash player with all the bells and whistles the Shuffle doesn't have), I recognize that it is the market leader.
