My XV6600 is due to arrive anytime in the next hour. I keep watching for the fed ex truck to turn the corner.

I am converging from a 3 year old samsung b/w dumb handset. I have absolutely no idea what to do first with this new phone.

Can anyone suggest some quick thoughts:

    1) What do I do out of the box? (immediately put it on the charger and not even turn it on for 8 hours?)

    2) How do I activate it? (Have to wait until it is charged?)

    3) How do I switch my old Sprint number to it (now VZN)?

    4) How do I activate the EV-DO?

    5) How do I synch it to my laptop (I do not have BT on my old IBM A20P). Is there a cable for synching it to the computer?

    6) When can I play with it? I am dying to surf the web with the EV-DO.

    7) Where do I buy these SDIO memory cards cheaply?

    8) Should I get a SDIO wi-fi/memory combo card?

Sorry for sounding so dumb. I am so excited, I can't sit down. But, without the above, I will just stare at the box. Or...like my father's little sex talk he gave me years ago..."just do what comes naturally."

    Thanks for your help.

lol. you talked to your pop about sex? lol!
well first make sure you get insurance, its really too nice of a phone/pda to break and be out $600+ dollars. second, if you want to chargeit and play with it, plus it into the ac adapter/sync adapter and charge while you are playing. call up verizon and activate it. and for those other questions about evdo (sorry i have the sprint so no evdo for me yet) look over on pdaphonehome.com forums since it seems this forum is populated with more sprint users (due to their very low data plan $$). but tell us how much verizon wants to charge you for data!

WOW WOW WOW, thanks for all the information and ideas.

I spent the entire day playing, er, I mean setting it all up. The CS at Verizon is better than any CS I have ever had from ANY source. They insisted on giving you excellent service, and refused to go until they knew you were completely satisfied. See why I can't keep a steady girlfriend?

This XV6600 is so AWESOME. I will write a full report this weekend as I have to now catch up for losing a day at work. I will say this: It blows away any Treo I have seen in terms of sheer power, speed, expandiblity, storage, coolness, you name it.

I have no beep of death, aka dreaded beep.

I had EV-DO right out of the box and it is actually faster than my wi-fi speed on my laptop.

The unlimited data package is $44.95, which includes unlimited broadband.

I got the insurance, only after reading input from here and pdaphonehome.com and it is $5.99/mo at VZN, but covers all of your accessories as well. So, they will replace everything, headsets, memory cards, wi-fi cards, etc, anything that gets damaged or stolen with your unit. I don't like paying an extra $6 on top of everything, but then again I am not used to handling a device like this, and I imagine it doesn't bounce very well, and we have probably all dropped our cell phones at one time or another.

I got mine for only $399 with a 2-year agreement and unlimited data pkg. There were no mail-in rebates to worry about, it was all take right off the top and is charged to my first phone bill.

The "push" email system that VZN has is awesome, works just like a blackberry, only using your own email account from work, home, school, yahoo, wherever and as many of them as you want to push.

I played all afternoon and night on the battery and was only down to 49% when I went to bed. However, I do not have any BT devices. The screen is so BRIGHT that I have to keep it on the very lowest possible level on battery. My EV-DO didn't seem to drain the battery much. I will see what happens today when I am away from home. I did buy 2 extra batteries, just in case since VZN has them at half price right now ($29.99 instead of $59 list).

I know nothing about the microsoft voice, but it sounds awesome. I want to get it, but might wait until the upgrade that I have heard is coming out soon, optimized for these phone. Any word or information on it from you guys/gals?

Okay, more formal views later. Just a tease for now.

I LOVE IT!!! And I highly recommend Verizon over Sprint for the service I got and the EV-DO and the no beep.

Good idea. It doesn't bounce very well. Glad its going well for you. Keep the info coming. I want to know specifically what you think of VZN data services esp. the impact of the "Push" settings on battery life.

Hope you get caught up at work.

sheesh, I want to try one! any info on when this will be available by "Sprintel"
"I have to return some videotapes."

"SPRINTEL" Business has them now. Apparently they might give you until 1/31 to return it if you don't like it. Verify that with Business BEFORE you bite. That's the Holiday store return policy and Business may not be so generous.

GOTTA Know more about the EVDO from what I have ready its much faster the WiFi ... so who needs a WiFi card. battery drain and weight if EVDO it really that fast.
Would like to see a beanchmark speed test.

    Pictures Pictures Pictures,
Can you compare the Tre650 camera to the PPC?
    How about the keyboard, loose?
    Size fit in pocket?
    Hows the landscape view?
    Outlook sync'ing?
Do you miss the Treo "size"?
Can you compare any PPC apps to what would be the same on the Treo?
these have been asked beforebut it is nice to have a 2nd view.

Can anyone suggest some quick thoughts:
    1) What do I do out of the box? (immediately put it on the charger and not even turn it on for 8 hours?). Mine came nearly fully charged, if so just start having fun. If not this is the fastest charging phone I have ever owned so charge it up.

    5) How do I synch it to my laptop (I do not have BT on my old IBM A20P). Is there a cable for synching it to the computer? It comes with a VERY nice cradle that even includes an slot for charging an extra battery. Just connect the power supply to the cradle and the cradle to your USB port. Simply load the CD that comes with it and it will walk you through installing ActiveSync. Load the software before connecting to USB.

    6) When can I play with it? I am dying to surf the web with the EV-DO. Im with sprint so EVDO is coming early next year. But vision (or the VZN equal) should be good to go out of the box as soon as it is activated.

    7) Where do I buy these SDIO memory cards cheaply? I bought my 1 GB card at www.MyDigitalDiscount.com for $95.

    8) Should I get a SDIO wi-fi/memory combo card? NO!!!!!!! The do not support the version of Windows and Scandisk has been reported as not even willing to try to offer a driver for it. There will be some new ones coming out the first half of next year.....but I have found the Wifi so useful as to not to recommend to wait. You can always eBay your Wifi card when the new combos out and have been proven to work. I have the Socket Wifi card and it is really nice hardware and software with low power drain.

Here are my 3 must haves for software though:

Must Have: VOICE COMMAND: ABSOLUTELY A MUST!!!! Whether this should of already been standard on the phone could be debated, there is no doubt the $30 is more than worth it. There is no voice training. You do not have to assign a voice command for each contact or software program. The program reads the names and listens for you to say it. It is ready and accurate right out of the box.

Since I don't use Voice Memos, I assigned that button for the Voice Command. You just click the button say "Call <Name> on mobile" and it calls their cell phone. It is even smart enough to confirm if it is not sure. You can even say "Launch <Program Name>" and it will launch it for you....no nav through menus or folders to find it.

Must Have: SPB POCKET PLUS: This is both a start page enhancement along with several OS addons (think of them as Palm OS hack enhancements).

The Start Page. Ever since I installed this, I don't think I have gone into Programs or Settings to find a program yet. This makes every program on your entire handhald available, including system utilities like connections or ringtones, all on your start page. Or you can only have your most favorite and mosted used there. You can create up to 5 tabs to organize your programs.

    OS Enhancements.
    • Close Button. You can actually have the program close with the close button. You also set it up to do stuff like minimize on tap and close on tap and hold on the close button.
    • Pocket IE. This adds the following to Pocket Internet Explorer:
      • Open Link in a new Window (invalulable with the way I browse the net).
      • Full screen support.
      • Page save ability.
      • Picture save ability
      • Copy link to clipboard
    • Taskbar Battery Indicator. Nice and really small along the top of the unit. It does not take up any screen real estate while letting you know how your battery is doing at a glance.
    • File Explore. This adds the following to File Explorer (which if you Resco makes this a mute point):

      • Enable ZIP support
      • Enable Storage card format support
      • Add Properties to the context menu
      • Add folder up button.
    • Program Manager. You can have a program manager, or least switch between running programs, added to the context menu.
Must Have: RESCO EXPLORER 2003. All I can say is that this really does give you just about every tool you have come to expect from a file explorer. Nicely laid out and very easy to use. Supports file drag and drop.

    I hope this helps.

Granted if you EVDO available, that is the obvious choice. But actually there are still lots of reasons to have a Wifi card on you....first of all EVDO is only as good as long as you are in a covered area or have a signal. I am not sure, but I don't think it works while roaming as well, please let me know if I am wrong.

A prime example. At my local airport, which is fairly large, there are areas in the deep terminals where everyone loses their signal. But since our airport offers FREE Wifi throughout the entire airport, I still internet and email, and voice through VOIP if I wanted.

If you are in a none EVDO area, and roaming, you have no data connection. No vision, no internet, no internet, no web or email. But throw in your Wifi card and presto you have it all back.

My Socket Wifi card actually has very low battery drain. Sure it uses more power, but nothing alarming at all.

To answer some of your questions.......
    • Pictures Pictures Pictures, Can you compare the Tre650 camera to the PPC? Dont have the camera version, can't help you here.
    • How about the keyboard, loose? As for the phone......every phone I have seen (or owned) have been built solid. The sliding Keyboard is a little easier to slide on some phones over others, but all very well built. Every user on all the forums I am active in have said the same about their phone....solid, nicely built, etc...
    • Size fit in pocket? I am not a pocket person, never have been unless it is my coat pocket...so again not the best person to ask. It is only a couple mm bigger than the Treo and thinner I think. Many have reported they pocket it just fine. I use a belt clip and it works just fine.
    • Hows the landscape view? Once you have it you wonder how ever did a spreadsheet, browsed the web, or played Warfare Incorporated without it. I assigned it a hardware button so with a click of button I am back and forth between landscap and portait.
    • Outlook sync'ing? Flawless. Have not read a single issue about yet in any forum.
    • Do you miss the Treo "size"? There is no doubt that the treo fits better in your hand, but please see here for my full answer to this: Using 6601 On the Road for Week..... and go down to the paragraphs titled Size, One Handed Operation, and Navigation.
    • Can you compare any PPC apps to what would be the same on the Treo? Here is how I answered a similiar question on another thread:
      http://discuss.treocentral.com/showpost.php?p=498905&postcount=94
But I can say that with my first phone it would not sync so I had to use it with only the software out of the box for a week on the road and did not feel lacking any major areas. I have found that the Palm does have a lot more OS hacks, which often can come in handy. But as for main apps, I was amazed at the shear volume of software options for the PPC.
