Hehe. I actually thought he was giving advice to everyone on how we should get Sprints attention!!!! That plan of attack has worked before, i.e. though hardware related, the flip on the Treo 300....Sprint for the 6 months responded that it was customer abuse until nearly everyone started returning them...

Like I am one to be talking (am on my 3rd phone), but since it is not available through Retail it can be a bigger deal to go through the process of returns. I understand the willingness to want a software problem fixed for a hardware sound device. Though Sprint has to address it first. So returning the phone may fix it, but we need to find all the ways to add pressure to fix what is probably a very small software issue.

O.K. I understand. I was concerned that my constant bleating was irriataing readers. I have been vocal and sometimes strident on this issue. Hobbes is right. R&R services on this device are hard to come by in a timely manner today. A month from now, it should be better.

The issue as I understand it today:

    1. Only SOME SPCS PPC's are affected.

    2. Affected phones are likely using Vision or quite possibly Vision with SPCS BC.

    3. The problem seems to occur only with Vision services maintaining a DORMANT connection to the network.

    4. Verizon phones are not reporting this problem.

Therefore, It seems very likely in my mind that this is an issue of the phone app, and, the Vision and/or BC app negotiating or failing to negotiate properly for the use of the radio while Vision is dormant and the user is connected on a cell call.

    Let's call that "Today's Theory".

Let's all switch to Verizon. That sounds like the perfect fix, and it will certainly grab Sprint's attention then.

I am investigating the XV6600 now. VZN has EVDO now, I am told it has broader coverage than Sprint, and that it is more reliable than Sprint in Atlanta. I currently have Sprint, so I might even get a sweeter new customer deal with VZN to make the switch.

Can anyone think of a reason not to switch to VZN, especially for this phone? I do not want the beep issue.

I agree. THAT would get SPCS attention. SO far Verizon is looking better and better. But wait, I have three phones on this plan. What WOULD THAT COST ON VERIZON?? Their data packages are quite a bit more expensive as well.

Even though, their succes with this device is very attractive.

    Bob,

I hear "rumor" that VZN will start offering a $10-$15 unlimited data plan in January, similar to Sprint's deal.

I think VZN might be the answer for me. I am tired of Sprint and all their problems. Now, if I could only find a way to purchase the phone.

rbright: Try walking into a brick and mortar Verizon store and telling them "I am the first of many dissatisfied SPCS customers I am bringing to your carrier. What can you do for me on the PPC-6600?"

If they cut you a reasonable deal, I'm there in a heartbeat.

SPCS has dominated my days for too long. If they won't respond to our needs, why continue to support them?

Good Luck and let us know.

    Thanks,

    Bob

    Bob,

I will do that this weekend. Of course, they won't know what the XV6600 phone is in the brick and mortar store, but maybe they can make a call to find out.

I have been with Sprint for 8 years, been off contract for 7 of those years. It is time to demand better service, and to make a change due to the poor service.

I have called every day for the past 2 weeks, asking Sprint about the PPC 6600. I have received at least 25 different answers (I call back several times on days I am bored), some say it is in stock, put you on hold, and never come back, some say it is here, let me take your money, oh, yeah, it is backordered now until January. Some say, the 6600 is already outdated and out of stock now because the 6601 is already out (why would they go backwards in number, she says). Oh the joy of poorly trained CS. Very bad, and probably illegal.

LOL!! CS is always good for frustration and/or laughs.

I've been with SPCS for 7 years and my contract is long gone as well. I was reasonably happy until the 6601 beep debacle. What a joke their response has been.

This is a great device to have IF they could make it work correctly. I will miss it's verasatility when it goes back which should be today if they managed to send the return kit.

Let me know what you hear from VZN.

    Thanks,

    Bob

You know....I have been with Sprint since 1996 and I must say that overall I have received good service, VERY competitive pricing, and good resolution to CS issues (though sometimes weeding through the more ignorant CS reps).

As far as the beeping issue we are talking about a phone that is still so new that it is still not even available through retail yet. Think of all the problems with the 600 even after it went retail.

We do have confirmation that Sprint now have recognized the issue and so now I can at least follow up on the progress of this. Compared to all the 600 issues, if we only two main issues (beeping and BT headset) then we are already in a better boat than many of 600 users were months after it's release. At least these all seem to be software issues that can be fixed with an update.

Switching to VZ is certainly an option, but man, I will tell you to check their pricing VERY closely. When I sold my 600 two months ago to upgrade I looked at VZ, but it took only 10 minutes in their store to see that they could not touch my monthly plan with sprint:

    2,000 minutes
    1,000 minutes of roaming
    Unlimited Data
Good coverage from WY to CA (the size of my District).
    Cost: $90 month

It would have cost me, after seeing all the add-on pricing, more than $85-95 extra a month for a total of around $180 a month to get a similar deal with them.

Sprint will be rolling out EVDO the first 2 qtrs next year, with more rural locations following the rest of the year. So it won't be long for that to be equal.

Just some food for thought before jumping into another contract.

I called VZN (you have to call the business service line) the phone is $549 with 2 yr agreement. If you sign up for the 44.95 unlimited (EV-DO, yea) plan they take another $100 off, so it is $449. The service plan that I use is only 39.99/mo for 400 min unlimited night/WE, plus free IN calling. Right now I pay 34.95 200 min Sprint, plus 1000 night/WE, no IN calling.

So, I am getting twice the minutes, unlimited N/WE calling, unlimited IN calling, for $5 more (BTW, Sprint is now at the same prices, my plan is just old), plus I get unlimited EV-DO for $44.95.

I don't think that is a bad deal. Plus I get VZN and MAN, the difference in the quality of the CS I have experienced this week in TREMENDOUS!!!!

One of you should try loading the device without Sprints extended ROM. (the custom software sprint forces on the phone) Try doing this; hard reset the device, when it comes back up, and you have to do that stylus test, and enter your timezone, you should see a box that begins counting down from 3 (or something like that). This is the extended ROM loader. Simply hit reset before it finishes counting. It should not prompt you again (unless you do another hard reset) Atleast this is how I do it on my PDA2k.
Ever wonder if those FreeIPOD / FreeMiniMac scam sites work? Well, I found out Have a look at the results:

Great Tip. As soon as I get my new phone, where I can do the calibration without a cracked screen, I will try that before I restore all my info.

I just talked to a local VZN business person who couldn't find the phone (no surprise there). A VZN plan comp to my SPCS plan (3 phones, 2000 anytime shared, unlimited data (44.95/month - EVDO where available, 1xRTT otherwise), unlimited phone-to-phone, unlimited nights/weekends) - $185 bucks a month. SPCS now runs me roughly the same.

I agree that I have had competitive service from SPCS, but it looks like VZN is stepping up to the plate as well. With the rumors /confirmation of SPCS/Nextel getting married, who knows.

If they can get the phone, I may well be gone.
Then again, I may just be a maroon babboon.

Yup, that is probably same deal I looked at. The cool thing with VZ is that you get EVDO now, at least where available. They have finally started to realize they have been way overprice for too long. There is no doubt that Sprint is starting to get a real run for their money from VZ. Which is why they are probably going to go through with the Sprint / Nextel merger.

But with my two phones 2,000 minutes shared with 1,000 minutes roaming, all the other standard bells and whistles, including taxes, I only pay $130 a month with Sprint. That is still an extra $55 a month for me......of course I realize that I am the odd ball user with all the traveling I do, roaming can be a killer if you don't read the fine print.

I think the bottom line is now coming down to coverage for your area and pricing for the specific needs you have.

    Hobbes:

You have a great plan! With your traveling, do you find yourself roaming off SPCS much? I travel a good bit as well and only in MT did I roam off SPCS (well and Canada, but the beer was worth the additional costs). Just curious why you would need the roaming minutes.

The problem now is that VZN says they can only sell the phone to current VZN business customers. Since I am a new customer, they cannot sell me the phone, yet.

Any ideas how I can get one?
  18. #38
Never mind. I got one (VZN XV6600). It is on the way, will be here Tuesday. Unlimited EV-DO...whew. Who needs wi-fi now? I am a die-hard wi-fi person, but if this is actually faster, and unlimited data, I don't see why I should buy a wi-fi card, or why I would drain the battery with the wi-fi card. I can use the slot for memory only...or maybe a cheap camera.

I will let you guys know how it goes. Now, how in the world will I sleep this weekend?

Who/How/Where did you come up with one?

The business lady I talked to hadn't heard of it/couldn't find it in her computer.

I did find out my company has a business comtract with VZN, so that may help me as well. Typical of corporate they didn't tell anyone. What a bunch of dolts.

Cool....I look forward to hearing about EVDO as a sneak peak in 2-4 months from now with Sprint. I can't wait for it.

As for Wifi....does EVDO work if you are roaming? If not, then there is a HUGE need for it if you are in Digital roaming. Plus if you ever travel outside of a EVDO area or even out of cell reception, wifi may be your only chance. Prime example is that I great reception, but there are a few spots in our airport that the signal is REALLY week...but PDX offers free Wifi. I may not get a call, but I have all my emails and the net.
