....they are all built in (for the basic function, for fancy schmancy features there are too many to mention)

    Snappermail
-this is the fanciest you get. (if the built in or freebie pop email are not enough. $25. It does everything)
    http://pocketinformant.com/p_webismail.php

    Treo Alert Manager
-In PPC there is this thing called 'today's page. where the machine compiled together appointment, unread messages, etc etc... (GPRS/SMS alert included)

    PDA Net
download from sprint. there are some third party too.

What do you use for directory assistance on the ppc? This is the only app I fear missing...

In case you are not familiar, you can look up business or residential listings, and tehn dial, copy them to phonebook, or link directly to mapquest for directions. Is there anything out there liek that for ppc?

go online and look up directory assitence maybe? I don't know what you are looking for... PPC has full internet service, so if online directory is what you want, why not go online?

if you want one of those directory in a can.
then pocket directory has some phonebooks
    http://www.pocketdirectory.com/

Most high end 'city guide/GPS roadmaps/ect)
has Point of interest, which list among other business establishments. Several advance PPC maps has integration with address book. (Microsoft's one works this way... read review around the net for more info)

Well, I know I can do that but in all honesty it is not the same caliber solution is DA for the palm.

I like launching a tiny program, entering info in fields that dont need to be downloaded and then let the program do the work in the background. From there I get list of matches and I can directly copy to my internal phonebook, click on "dial" or even link to m,apquest directly and have the "to" field in directions be automatically populated.

in all honesty, if I was sitting in front of my pc I would still go to the treo to look up a number. DA is that good.

So it sounds like there is nothing out there like it?

In addition, DA is actually polling 555-1212.com for the info so it is not canned, it just feels like it is.

I still don't understand what exactly you want, since the DA is just a front end for YP.com search.

why not use the yp.com page directly?

This page seems convinient enough for me. Just slap it to pocket IE bookmark or create a homepage fronpage launcher for pIE)
    http://m.yp.com/

(to cut and paste.....well just paste it like any other text. I forgot which service has active phonenumber link. ...)

Thanks for the link. It is actually better than I thought it would be. It looks usable.

Still I cant believe that there is not a direct substitue. I guess I just need to let my PQAs die!

    Thanks

    ehrr...dude. It's the SAME....
DA is what a browser is to iJam. DA is a specialized browser to see YP.com database.

I thought you seriously was asking for highly integrated apps. (ie. you tap your address book, say...your corporate customer, and ......the PDA will automatically chart a GPS map for you) PPC can do that, but not with live online map. Only with canned map.

Call it whatever you want, but at the end of the day DA is much more more functional and efficient. I have used yellow pages like engines on the treo, it is just not as good.DA does not need to download the fields for text entry, I dont have to go into a favorites page to find it, and it talks to my address book and web browser for both maps and directions. It integrates everything extremely well.

A couple of more forums I have found useful for such questions:

    Aximsite
    IpaqHQ

Also for media player - BetaPlayer is a must have and it is free. It blows away many of the popular and expensive alternatives.

I don't care how long a list of software links you see posted, the software for the PPC is not only smaller in quantity, it is also of less quality as compared to the PPC. There is just no money it in for developers, per the response from several developers I've written over the last couple of months.

However, you'll really like some of the things the PPC can do that the Palm cannot. For one thing, it handles time zones properly.

Mail: I feel you but I'm going to tell you straight -- there is no replacement for Snappermail. I purchased a WebIS registration and lost my mail 2 times now like many others. The author expects you to maintain your mail on a server and suggests you uninstall/reinstall to solve software bugs. Uninstalling deletes all of your email. I can't recommend ANY email package available.

Since Snappermail stores mail on expansion cards in HTML, you can view/use all of your stored Snappermail data on your PPC with PocketWord. Send your cards and letters to support@snappermail.com and maybe they will change their priorities and port to the PPC this year.

Treo Alert Mgr - sorry, I never used it with my Treo 600 but the Today page is pretty good. It is almost as nice as Shimon's 2day! app.

PDA Net - you don't need it. There is freeware available to do this. See the above links and search around for "wModem".

DA - nope, no substitute. You can search using PIE, copy/paste/dial though. I know, I know, it is not like DA where you can put the results in your addressbook. Maybe someone will write the code. Not holding my breath.
