In other news, I got a thing from Cingular today talking about the merger and stuff (I'm on AT&T)... In their catalog, they showed a pic of the 6601/PDA2k/Siemens SX66 (cingular's branding)... Looked purty -- I guess they'll have it available soon if they're already promoting it in print..

Although most Treo users are rather cavalier about SAR ratings (the Treos having rather high ones, especially the CDMA versions, hence the bulbs on the 600s), here is another big advantage for this 6601: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6602_7-...1.html?tag=txt
You may be right; I may be crazy. But, the Treo may be just the device I've been looking for.

If anybody wants the T9 app from mini, somebody extracted it from ROM.

With the actual and software keyboard on the 660x, doesn't this seem a little counter productive.....or since I have never used this program, am I missing something?

Dreaded "Beep of Death" . . is gone so far. I did a hard reset and reloaded the software. So far so good.

Hobbs...your review and recommendations are great!

One quick question...you mentioned problems a while back with the SanDisk 256MB/Wi-Fi SD card. Did the problems ever get resolved? A working Wi-Fi card with storage would sure be nice.

    Thanks!

    maynard,
its going to be difficult and buggy for the 256 combo wifi to work - here's why. that card is "backwards" when it comes to load things - most cards you pop in and dont need special drivers for them to work - that card works first and foremost as a wifi card and *requires* you to load drivers to recognize the memory/storage aspect. it seems silly because of the way the card is laid out to do it this way, but if my memory serves me right, you cant use that card in *any* device without first loading the drivers, in order for the device to recognize both MEMORY and WIFI. its a shame really. lcukily, the 6601 has about ~90 megs free after programming loading and storage, so the best bet right now is to download to the storage/memory area and then transfer. perhaps more sd wifi companies like socket will produce a combo card. 1gb +wifi would b nice

Thanks Sledgie...very helpful. Perhaps I'll just get a wi-fi SD card, and switch out the storage card when I need it.

Here is what happened with my adventures with the ScanDisk combo card:

I DID IT!!!!! I Got the Scandisk 256mb Wifi Card to Work!!!!!! At Least....

So.....now I have the Socket 802.11b Wifi card (without any membory)....and it works GREAT!!!!

I just installed the drivers and monitor software on the 6601, plugged it in, and I was looking at 6 different wireless networks around my home and (after I remembered to add my MAC address to MAC filtering on my router) I logged onto my own wireless network browsing the net and downloading emails. It took awhile for IE to finally dump Vision and use the Wifi, but BC used it right away.

It did use a little more power than usual, but nothing like others claimed it would. It is not that bad if your aware of it...especially, since this is the fastest charging phone I have ever had, if you have a car charger for a quick recharge afterwards.

The card does suspend itself when the 6601 hibernates, which is an issue with some other PDA, so it does not suck any power during it's downtime.

My wireless router is upstairs. Downstairs in the kitchen, which is about the furtherest I get without going outside, I was still at 50-60% signal strength at 11mbs transfer.

Since I travel to a lot of roaming areas, which is not hard to do in the Northwest, I will be able to have internet access via Wifi. I have a wifi sniffer program....and you wouldn't believe how many free access points there are out there. Whether from hotels, cafes & resteraunts, homes nearby that don't have a clue about security, or some city sponsored hotspots.....they are all over the place.

Yes.....a gb wifi would be VERY nice and if it worked, I would pay for it.

What WiFi sniffer are you using? On your PPC?

    TIA for the reply.

    OK, I'll bite...
Why would we delete his review?
Seems like an honest fair review to me..

I don't know, at least somebody change the 'display last day' to 'display last month' setting in this forum.

pretty pathetic attempt to hide information don't you think?

Thats a user specific setting... I think you are being a bit paranoia here...
Mine is set to a month and I havent changed it manually, so I assume it is the default..

No he is not paranoid.....a TC admin acknowledged this issue in another thread. He said he did not know why but this forum defalts wrong so threads disappear really fast. He said he was going to fix it, but don't know for sure if it was.

Here's one -for your next staff meeting http://discussion.treocentral.com/sh...hlight=default

I think this has improved lately or been rectified. For awhile there, all we saw were Today posts on this forum -by default.
You may be right; I may be crazy. But, the Treo may be just the device I've been looking for.

I am in the same boat as a lot of you. I upgraded 5 days ago from the T600 to the T650. I have a 6601 on the way to test out and have been combing the forums for information to assist in the decision that lies ahead. First of .. Hobbes, that is one of the best and most thorough reviews I have ever read in a forum. THANK YOU!

Now my next question may sound ignorant, but... what is the benefit of WiFi? I see quite a few people asking about it and I have no experience with it therefore cannot comprehend the benefits. I realize that you can connect to the hotspots and surf the web, but we can surf the web without the WiFi. Is it any faster?? Any insight to WiFi would be really helpful.

    Thanks!
