BBC News - ZTE's new Firefox smartphone will only be sold on eBay

what do people think, is their idea of selling via ebay a smart move or risky?

depending on exactly how they manage things im personally leaning towards a smart idea given that they shouldnt anger any shops/retailers if the devices dont roll out as fast as expected.

I can't speak toward the UK, but here in the US bypassing the carriers is probably the smartest thing I've seen in mobile for quite a long time...

The carriers don't like unlocked, they disdain a bargain and they adapt to change at the same rate as a glacier making a sharp left turn.

Here's the spec run down: ZTE Open - Full phone specifications

And here's a puzzling item on eBay. Claims to be zte_us selling out of Hong Kong with "New Other" Opens that do not have a buy it now price... ZTE Open Firefox OS Black | eBay

One of ZTE's factories selling QA failed phones? Or a clone factory that preempted the ZTE name?

theres a ?developer? one very much the same as the one you linked for 79 on ebay.co.uk and a "normal" one for 43, quite a price difference to the one on ebay.com.

    Prototype / Developer ZTE OPEN ( Firefox OS ) - Pre-Production Collectible | eBay

ZTE OPEN ( Firefox OS ) - ORANGE | eBay

no "buy it now" for them either, just bids, i also note their shaped very much like our beloved dead pre phones. The lack of "buy it now" im guessing will put many off tbh, the ebay plan looking less sensible now.

In choosing Fleabay over Amazon, they are making their products look suspect, and with no "Buy it now", even more so : /

I fail to understand. Ebay doesn't have the go-to reputation for getting your shiny new phone.

    Amazon? sure, but "Fleabay"?

    why, i don't even.

Apparently the eBay seller we were looking at earlier IS the official ZTE channel.

The Open is out on eBay for $79.99 USD: ZTE Open 3G Unlocked Firefox OS Cellphone Orange eBay Exclusive | eBay

If the thing had 1700 MHz on the 3G radio I might be more tempted.
