They say a picture is worth a thousand words -- but in this case, a picture is worth tens of billions of dollars in market share. Nielsen has broken down its US smartphone market share stats between November and January in two dimensions -- by market share and by platform -- and stuffed all that data into a single block of mesmerizing color. It's interesting to see the Apple and RIM juggernauts flanked by two imposing, red slivers of HTC, isn't it? The research firm also took a look at platforms by age group; the shares are surprisingly consistent across the board, though Android does have a slight edge with the young'uns. Follow the break for that chart.

    And the critical bit?

But an analysis by manufacturer shows RIM and Apple to be the winners compared to other device makers since they are the only ones creating and selling smartphones with their respective operating systems

Didn't HTC make some Palm devices? The category seems to be a mix of HP webOS with Palm OS and Palm webOS. I say that only because it says "Palm/webOS" rather than "Palm webOS" (without the slash).

Without a doubt....just look at Apple's revenue from the iPhone. Absurd.

A lot of people chime in with android vs. iOS and say "No android device does numbers like the iPhone on 1 (well, now 2) carriers.

While true...i don't think you can do a comparison as easy as that. There are tons of android devices so they compete against themselves meaning its hard for just one phone to take a large bulk of the shares.

They really did change the relationship between cell phone manufacturers and wireless providers - something no one else has figured out how to do yet.
