After using a EVO myself for 6 months, and can say that the battery life was as bad, if not worse then my palm pre is 4G the culprite? Now with reports of the HTC Thunderbolt being delayed now because of even worst battery life (2-3hours), it is a question now of do we really need 4G right now, or can we wait until battery technology increases and is able to provide us with some normal daily use?

HTC Thunderbolt said to have terrible battery life, might explain delay? -- Engadget

Well, honestly, my evo gives me a solid 9+ hours on heavy use on 3g, so im guess with 4g, it probably would be 7 hours. 7 hours on a smartphone on heavy use? Ill take that. You have to understand that this thing uses a small battery and it does what you computer does and beyond.

yeah I feel u, though funny u get that long on your EVO when I had it the first one I had gave me 5 hrs on 3G and 3 on 4G. I returned it and got another one and got a little better battery life, but def never 9 or 7 hrs. I rooted it, bought an extended one etc, and have alot for employees (maybe 8) with EvOs and all have similar battery lifes and has to carry around a charger cable all the time.

yeah, i think thats why palm held off on 4g. pre batt life was already crappy, imagine with 4g! i wonder why 4g sucks so much power? is it a reception issue?

well i believe 4g is great if you use it like i do with 3g. i only activate 3g when i need it. With my pixi i am having an average battery life of two and a half days.

the benefit of 4g would be a faster connection for heavy usage, like facetime/youtube/navigation

With 3G at 1.5 Mbps, there is rarely a time you need 4G. My Pre and EVO download plenty fast. The difference is in how long it takes apps to load. Google Maps on the EVO in 3G loads so fast it is hard to time. Facebook is almost instant as well.

The difference is not 3G vs. 4G or CPU's. The difference is that BlackBerry, iOS, and Android "optimize" their code for their apps into "native" code. webOS re-interprets the program every time and converts it into native code on the fly. With all things being the same, the compiled code will always be faster than interpreted.

A lot of what we attribute to slow download speeds are due to other factors.

aww that makes sense, so do you think companys like HP(webos) should worry about optimizing Webos, and pairing it with comperable internal specs to make the experiance faster, as opposed to worring about a 4G radio? To me yes with the EVO i didnt see a big difference at all from 3G to 4G with regular app usage, but I def saw a battery difference.

Well i mostly run cyanogen roms. They are know for their great battery life. I also run a savage kernel. Savage 0.10 cfs havs wimax. I refuse to use setcpu and all those screen off underclock are irrelevant with savage kernels. My battery can go a day with moderate use and i kid you not. Ill show some stats of an hour of texting and other things

Well, i didnt come up with any of them though. If you still have your evo and you're rooted, then head over to xda forums. You'll find tons of kernels and roms. There are people that have far more better battery life than me.

4G: More data consumption, for battery consumption.
