On webOS, I just kind of reconciled myself to getting a few new games here or there but not much as far as applications. On Android, I'm geared up with all of these things that I can do but when I actually try to put them to work, the apps aren't available or half-work or are so riddled with ads that you can't even see how the app would work to consider buying it.

There's some good stuff out there that just doesn't even exist in webOS, but there is a huge amount of extra garbage in their main app catalog. That's what you get when anything can be in the app catalog.

Pros: Great hardware selection. Great carrier selection. Good app selection. Large attractive installed base means a reason for developers to deliver apps (big name apps as well as fringe apps)
Cons: Clumsy, disorganized user interface. Marketplace is full of garbage.

I keep switching back and forth between my webos phones and my Droid2.
YOU Have pros, good application selection,,,, cons, market has mostly garbage,,,, which is it.

I am not comparing the two. I was making a comment on how Android and iOS overstate their apps. It's much worse with Android though.

And yes, webOs doesn't have very many apps... we all know and hate that.

I've never looked for them and I'm glad they don't show up, when you're searching for other stuff.

Yea, the fart apps on android is not a big deal. They never show up on the front page of the market and never show up when I search for another app.

It's not the fart apps... those actually count as apps. Wallpaper (live or otherwise) shouldn't count. Android is loaded with stuff that requires no programing. Not defending any other OS at all. Android just seems to attract stuff like that, and Google is more than happy to count them.

I don't think they other stated their apps because according to androlib they should have 250k.

Android Market statistics from AndroLib, Androlib, Android Applications and Games directory

Livewallpapers are apps. Most of them are interactive. I did a search for "wallpaper" and I came up with 14,872 apps. But not all of them are wallpapers. I scrolled down and found weatherbug, google maps, beautiful widgets, etc...

Whether 150k or 250k, there are a lot of non apps there. Either way, Android has a crap load of apps without all that fluff.

I really thought you were kinda joking. I love webOS as far as the UI but to say the the app catalog is pathetic is an understatement compared to apple, android even palm os. After 2 years why can't someone view pdf's,edit a doc, voice input,dl med apps, etc.

I am telling you that counting wallpaper or icon tweaks should not count.

Oh well. This is like fighting that whole chicken/egg thing, or the grassy knoll thing. Was there a second Chicken? Or did they shoot the egg first?

There are legitimate gripes with webOS, just as there are with any OS. I was trying really hard to not be a fan boy type guy. Just calling it as I see it.

And yes, I was joking a little, but counting non apps as apps bugs me. It paints a picture that is not accurate.

As a Droid user the ANdroid marketplace is a disaster. You can find most of the stuff you want and not much more - simply browsing causes you to stumble across a lot of garbage news readers, wallpapers, root only apps and bad match 3, ringtone, or unofficial crap ("Mario Jump Game!"). You pretty much need to know what you're looking for because you won't discover anything by browsing the market - rankings never ever change.

There are a handful of really useful Android only apps aside from the usual suspects like Kindle and Fandango. These would include StatusNotes, which pins notes and icons to the notification pane, Where's My Droid which lets you text your phone for information/ringing, iSyncr Wifi for wireless iTunes syncing and Catch for cloud notes. Then there's a ton of garbage. Check for yourself at the site.

It's great to have so many apps and a lot to choose from but don't look with envy - it's not some source of abundant useful apps.

My point being that regardless of how many apps a company advertises, like the 150K apps comment, if people are buying hardware that can't even access those apps, it's kinda pointless. So in otherwords, my mother was one of those people with access to only a handful of apps, was ticked off, and will not buy an android product because it was not advertised that it could not access the android market. This fragmentation problem only drives people towards apple.
