The problem I have with Pre tethering is Battery and Heat. The battery life gets cut severely (90min avg) and the heat tends to force it to shut down constnatly. So EVO will probably perform better, but its not ideal

It doesn't mean I wouldn't have made a different choice given the option. These days you can't have a smartphone without a data plan. There is no reason for it other than money. The option of no data plan isn't offered simply because it means they would make less money, not because it can't be done. If they wanted to, they could give multiple price points for the phone depending on what type of data service you want.

Oh and... your solution really isn't a solution for me because it means I'd be carrying around another device - no thanks.

I guess I'll just keep bending over.
Not sure why this is so hard for you to grasp. You want companies that provide voice service and data to sell you a device that uses voice service and data, yet you only want to pay for the voice portion.

And you're surprised and/or frustrated about this? Of course, they CAN offer you a no data plan option. It would make no sense to, and any carrier that made this an option would probably be doomed shortly thereafter. It's not them "bending you over" because they won't offer you everything you want in one device at the price you want. It's you being unreasonable. If you want that scenario, it's clearly available with two separate devices. That's the price you pay.

For me the upload speeds aren't good.
I often need to upload large files to clients.
I actually get better uploads with 3G.

Tis true. Speed is not all about downstream. However, I was getting 2 mbits up speed in Boise.

I have heard it said that the 10 dollars actually is more for the qik service than the 4g.

It's been a disappointing year with the companies I buy from. Microsoft killed courrier Apple went overboard with power. Palm failed to deliver with the Pre. And TiVo and Sprint were the two companies that I was a real "fanbo-" for and they disappointed with this and the TiVo Premier.
I have a Tivo Premier and even though it's not perfect it still beats the crap out of Comcast's craptastic DVR.

I think 10 bucks a month for WiMax access is a good deal. I don't think you guys know how fast it really is.
    Palm Vx -> Treo 600 -> Treo 700p -> Centro -> Pre (Launch Phone 06/06/09) -> AT&T Pre Plus with Sprint EVDO swap -> Samsung Epic 4G w/ Froyo

Blackberry cost 15 bucks a month for email. Iphone cost 30 extra for notoriety. The difference is you are getting super fast internet with the Evo. I don't think your getting ripped off at all. You can cancel your home internet that cost 30 bucks and have faster internet for 10. So, honestly the Evo will be saving you 20 bucks a month.

Keep in mind the 5GB cap.

I posted in another thread that there's a 5gb cap.
I have to watch myself - very easy for me to go over.

Edit: I forgot, the cap is for 3G.

There is no 5gb cap for WiMax...it is unlimited. Also the releases I read said that the extra $10 you pay to own the Evo also gets rid of the 5gb cap on EVDO as well.

Is Blackberry even an extra 15 on Sprint?

I would gladly pay the extra 10 a month if my city was at least on the roll out plan for 4g, but to pay for something that I don't even have the option to use is crap.
