I wonder if this had anything to do with the poor QC with iphone 4? Looks like apple went the route that most U . S . Companies take... Build a reputation on quality... Then cut back quality and pump out a billion products with lower QC controls.

I had once thought they had begun to coat the antenna bands with a non-conductive clear coat mid production run -- which accounted for the mixture of bad and not bad reports.

Now I'm guessing that Jobs likes that $30 he makes from each set of rubbers he sells to bother with a fix for some while

It seems location is a factor, the one the software update may "fix" by being honest about how good or bad the signal is at a particular location.

A second factor may be the user. As well as different people holding it differently, not everyone is as conductive - read "sweaty" - perhaps?

After that, perhaps there is an issue with some individual phones? I did see reports of screw burrs partially shorting the antenna internally, which may explain why some units seem to have poorer overall reception.

As I've said before though, there have been zero real problems with the phone in my house.
