Sony has announced the SL-10, with only one online site (PC Mall) giving us any notice...

    320x320 monochrome screen
OS 4.1 and the standard Sony feature set
T-Series Connector (yea - Sony's sticking to it!)
    Jogdial AND Back button
    AAA Batteries
New buttons (but the up/down looks just as bad almost...)
Extra USB Port (!?) - probably only for charging, etc., not for USB periph.'s...

    www.sonystyle.com/micros/clie

Well, I'm not giving up my 615c for this one, but it looks like a great bargain...

This is Sony's 6th new baby this year, and it's only July...wonder what we're gonna see in the next half of the year...?

well, now that the springboard is being phased out, why would anyone want a BW PDA other than this one?

SD slot? CF slot? Battery life? Virtual graffiti? Voice recording? Rechargeable battery? While being able to keep the jog dial and back button?

Is everyone in the world dazzled by shiny objects?

Ok, what I was wanting to say was why would any one want any other mono PDA *around this price*.

I wasn't think too clearly since I was apparently dazzled by all the pretty, shiny things.

What did sony do? Yet anther model? There is nothing here that is earth shaking Palm,Handspring both have models in this price range (and theyll be around longer) so out side of Sony throwing out a average of a PDA a month I don't see much to get excited about.

I like it. Of course I'm not going to run out and trade in my N760C (which, by the way, still serves me well despite being discontinued - imagine that). But this will probably be the new low end PDA that I recommend to new users.

It's not that it has an extra USB port, it's that it doesn't come with a USB cradle, it comes with a cable and I guess the cable fits the standard small USB port like on digital cameras and what not. Funny isn't that when things like digital cameras start to move towards cradles, PDAs start to move away from cradles.

WEll, the no cradle move is a legit. cost cutting measure...you need it for something this cheap.

Palm has made NEW devices this cheap before, Handspring has offered OLD devices this cheap before, but never with this featureset. Standard 8 megs + USB syncing + hi-resolution screen + all the added software (docs to go, etc.) + expansion + tiny size...nothing individually is groundbreaking, but paired together for a under $150 SUGGESTED retail price, that's pretty damn good...

No cradle is fine with me. I use a hot sync cord anyway.
I especially wasn't going to pony up $79 to Kodak for a docking station for my digital camera. For the $79 I got a 128meg CF card and a better charger for my nimh's.

Excellent device; HOWEVER, I'm still crabbing about the exclusiveness of the memory stick. No CF,SM, SD.

-I don't care much what format of external memory it is really...
-being greyscale batterylife should be ok..
    -Voicerecording would be nice indeed
-virtual graffiti is the best thing since sliced bread...well allmost.. I really like it on my NR70V
-on a grayscale I actually prefer replaceble batteries since you can easily carry some spares and use rechargeble AAA in it too, best of both worlds.. color devices use too much juice for replacable batteries..
    -Jog dial is nice too..

This new Sony is not perfect, but has pretty darn good vallue for money...

I believe D-R was making a disquised attempt comparing this to his Handera 330 - small differences though that people would buy this one and not the 330 - the SL10 will be in stores everywhere, people know Sony, they don't know Handera, and the Sony is half the cost (with a better, non-vg screen...)

I have to admit, Sony is really impressing me all around, either with design, the features on the upper end models or with what you get for the money on the new low end peg-sl10.. Handspring really dropped the ball BIG TIME with the whole Treo gaff and Sony is picking it up and running with it.. Sony is going to mop up Handspring I hate to say...

When my Prism finally needs to be replaced, there really isn't much doubt in my mind anymore which manufacturer I am going to look at for a replacement unit, (hint: and the device I get won't have a cell phone built into it )..

I just don't like the idea of having yet *another* flash media format, but I think I could eventually live with that, as it seems no matter where you look the memory stick format is being forced onto us anyway. It's a lesser evil I suppose.

Ooh oohh look pretty shiny thing!

Yes - shame about the memsticks. Oh well.

Monochrome, voice recording, hi-res!!!! But only 8mb? Sticking to my Pro.

Pretty shiny thing nearly got me to buy it.
    I'm just a dreamer..

The device was irrelevant. I just happen to know the feature set of the handera better. We could just as easily have looked other features (maybe bundled software, SD slot, rechargeable battery, etc.) The point, which was obviously lost in the details, is that there are many needs that this device - even with its comfy price tag - can't meet.

    And that crippled Handspring how?

Better screen? Is that a blanket statement or would you like to qualify that? And, as I mentioned before, what good is that price if the device doesn't do what is needed?

Try to understand, I'm not saying the Sony is a poor machine. If it weren't for MS, I'd be all over it. But, realistically, the reason this is going to sell is because Sony has the resources to sell these things at cost and the manufacturing to flood the market.

I was comparing Sony to Handera, not Handspring, not Palm. Just to Handera. That's how I was able to say better screen. (Many people, despite the great advantages of the HE screen, complain about it's quality, how it is very Palm III'ish...) I thought my only Handera comparison was obvious, but I apoligize.

There are always going to be needs in a device that won't be there. The point is though, this is a entry level device. You don't need the voice recorder, or rechargeable battery in a entry level device. I also am thinking this is going to have a great battery life, compared to the 360...we will have to wait and see.

I don't think at this this price point 320 x 320 is going to matter. At this price point it going to come down to what the sales person points them to. So I just don't see Joe consumer going to care.

The post you responded to was mine. I wasn't. Here's to clarification.
That's how I was able to say better screen. (Many people, despite the great advantages of the HE screen, complain about it's quality, how it is very Palm III'ish...)
I have heard no such complaint. Then again, the Palm III screen is one of the last I would consider comparing handera's to. In fact, including its backlight, I haven't seen a screen I'd compare it to. I could've just gotten lucky...twice.
I thought my only Handera comparison was obvious, but I apoligize.
As I didn't think people would get hung up with the specifics in my post.

The point is though, this is a entry level device. You don't need the voice recorder, or rechargeable battery in a entry level device.
Allow me to disagree. The point is, even given that this is an entry level device, people are going to have different requirements that entry level device needs to fill (word and/or excel synchronization come to mind).

How is Sony going to mop up Handspring? Handspring is no longer competing with Sony (or Palm for that matter) head to head. If anything, this release by Sony vindicates Handspring's strategy. Sony have enough money to throw at an unprofitable business...Handspring does not.
