After hesitating long I have dicided to spend my tax return on a Sony NR70V...

It was really hard to make the choise between the Treo270 and the NR70V but the lather won...

I realized I would use/need the MP3 and Camera ability more often than the Phone on the treo...

I really like the 270, but it was the functionality of the NR70V that won....

Hopefully I made the right choise...

I think you made the right decision regardless of whether you're a mod.

Ik zie het als een goed doordacht besluit.

According to me HS need a good kick somewhere for their behaviour. The latest insult is that the 270 costs only 7% more compared to the 180 (EU conditions) but has color and 3 times more power.
I believe this is the last time I bought an HS device.

No. I only did the first one. You can choose different translations for each word - did you try that?

I'm not so sure about the NR70...it looks really cool but after toying with it I had a few problems. The biggest was being unable to get to the quick launch and the scroll buttons. As a lefty I often use the scroll buttons when the Lefthack doesn't work in a program. Being unable to get at them when it is in PDA mode would be really frustrating for me. Also at $1000CDN it is $200 than a Compaq iPaq H3850 or about $50 more than the H3870 which is just under ten times the speed and has in my opinion a surperior OS that will eventually be the downfall of Palm if they don't get their act together. The one thing I loved about the NR70 was the keyboard which I thought was well layed out and picking it up for the first time was amazed at my accuracy and speed while typing on this little device, also the 66Mhz chip makes a lot of difference when running power-hungry apps like the camera. The only thing I can't figure out is with PalmOS 5 just around the corner why they did wait with such a revolutionary device to make it that much more, a waste of R&D if you ask me.

Over here the PPC's are about the same price I pay for a NR70V in the US so I'll buy one oversees (the NR70V will start be sold down under in August )
As For OS, I think most people here will agree with me that Palm OS is more elegant, uses less resources and has more (free) software available for it... But to each its own... PPC has gotten a lot better over the years...
As for processor speeds, a PPC has a faster proc, but the OS slows it down giving you the same end result... Same with RAM...
PPC in general use more power because of the faster CPU leading to shorter battery life...

I spend a lot of time using Windows CE. But I was burned by MS and HP because the "upgradable" HP 360LX never received the upgrade. The applications are definitely usefull when you need "near" windows applications and do not have a PC within range but the office applications under 2.11 are limited. Also the newer generations (PPC) do not have a keyboard which makes the use of word and excel questionable. And since Notebooks have become "standard" equipment I rather pull out my notebook when I need the use of more sophisticated applications.

It is important to understand the Palm philosophy. The PalmOS device is an extension to a normal PC and not an replacement. Processor intensive tasks should be performed on the PC, while the Palm allows information to be portable. According to me the problem with the PPC is that people see it as a PC replacement (or gadget) and not as an information tool.

I use the Treo as an information tool, I keep my appointments, todo's and notes on the device, use it enter information for processing later on the PC, and to be able to make and receive phone calls. The major advantage is that I take it with me (almost) anywhere and only carry one device. In the past I would only carry a phone only most of the time. Because of this I did not make the best use of the palm. (the same can be said of the CE machine). Now I carry both in one and I can use it at anytime.

I spend the last few days away from home in the Alps without my notebook, my sister-in-law told me that there is a concert near them in July. Because of the Treo I was able to check my calendar and make a decision. Under the previous conditions I would only have carried my phone on me and would not have had access to my calendar.

I have a long history with organizers, I started with the PSION Organizer II, then Sharp Zaurus, HP 360LX, Palm III, Treo 180.
The "best device", performance wise was the Sharp Zaurus, but for usability the Treo tops them all.

The only thing that would make me even happier is when HS fixes the bugs in the phone software that causes the Treo to reset the wireless mode under bad coverage conditions.

Ok, I'm not a PocketPC "advocate", but I hate to hear things repeated over and over that just aren't true. As a developer, I'm pretty familiar with the internal operation of both PocketPC and PalmOS and I can assure you that there is nothing in the PocketPC 2002 OS that makes it fundamentally less efficient than PalmOS. If apps seem no faster on PocketPC than on PalmOS, its because PocketPC app developers tend not to work as hard at optimization as their PalmOS counterparts. Optimization takes a lot of time/money, so when apps hit a point developers consider "acceptable" they tend to stop tweaking. It has virtually nothing to do with the OS.

PPC in general use more power because of the faster CPU leading to shorter battery life...
Faster CPU is only a tiny part of the increased battery load. The big hitters are high res backlit/sidelit color LCDs, significantly more RAM, integrated audio hardware, IR that you can't (as far as I know) disable, and very small batteries (additional hardware in the same size package takes away battery space). Put a PocketPC size battery in a Visor Prism (the Prism's battery is huge) and you'd be lucky to get 2 hours of run time.

I'm not trying to convince anyone that PocketPC is better (or worse) than PalmOS. But a choice between the two should be made based on facts and not folklore
