iPhone OS 4.0 Claimed to Include Multitasking, Revamped Interface

Boy Genius Report claims to have received information from a source regarding iPhone OS 4.0, which is rumored to be introduced at next week's media event in San Francisco. According to the source, iPhone OS 4.0 will be limited to the iPhone 3G and 3GS (presumably including at least more recent iPod touch models and omitting the original iPhone) and will incorporate solutions for multitasking by running applications in the background and a revamped user interface for easier navigation.
    - There will be multi-touch gestures OS-wide. (Would make sense for that as the rumored OS for the iTablet is close if not the same as the iPhone)
    - "A few new ways" to run applications in the background -- multitasking.
    - Many graphical and UI changes to make navigating through the OS easier and more efficient. We haven't had this broken down, but we can only hope for improved notifications, a refreshed homescreen, etc.
    - The update will supposedly be available for only the iPhone 3G and 3GS, but will "put them ahead in the smartphone market because it will make them more like full-fledged computers" more than any other phone to date. Everyone is "really excited."
    - The last piece of information is the most vague, but apparently there will be some brand new syncing ability for the contacts and calendar applications.

The ability to run iPhone applications in the background has been near the top of many users' wish lists, but Apple has yet to implement full backgrounding and multitasking due to its effect on performance and battery life, instead opting to deploy push notifications as a means for closed applications to serve data to users. The expansion of the ability to run applications in the background beyond those few specified by Apple has been a relatively common theme, with multiple reports suggesting that Apple has been working on ways to deploy the functionality in at least a limited sense, although many expected such developments to be included in iPhone OS 3.0 last year.
if true, what can palm do to get another leg up on the iphone? the multitasking feature is/was the best thing about webOS that doesn't even make me question my decision of getting this phone instead of switching to at&t. with this, and the already proven apps the iphone has, does the pre have any chance?

PALM has its task cut out.
They have to really work hard against two best companies , APPLE and Google.
If they survive (which they will), we as consumers will benefit from this three way race.
We are lucky as the consumers living in this era.

Wm and android do multitasking too, obviously none of them can't compete with Pre in this area.

a new way to run application in the background? thats not where near the desktop level multitasking of Pre.

WebOS gonna always has a leg up in this department, sounds like iPhone 4 will be approching android or WM, rather than remotely getting close to what WebOS is doing.

If the iphone can multitask as well as the Pre, then we are in trouble. Multitasking is the the one thing we do better then the iphone...

I would still never sell my soul to apple. Even if their phone was 3ghz with a holographic projector. I would go back to winmo 6.5 first.

    1) If the iPhone can multitask, then I doubt many people will be considering WebOS if they were undecided earlier. All the iPhone would need at that point is a landscape QWERTY slider and it would be one of the best phones of all time.

    2) Why does everyone type it 'PALM,' when it's Palm?
    no 'Thanks'

Yes it sure does because it isn't on AT&T and has many other things the iPhone probably still won't offer.

    1. Developer Freedom
    2. Hardware Keyboard
    3. Better Notification System
    4. Unified Email Inbox
    5. It isn't on a ****ty network

I could go on for a while but the Web OS still has things thats great. So does the iPhone OS but AT&T is that devices achilles heel until it comes to Verizon or Sprint I am no longer interested. The apps will come eventually you have to remember the Pre has only been open to certain vendors till a couple of days ago. Unless AT&T pulls a miracle and gets coverage like those two. The only downside to Verizon or Sprint is that they can't do simultaneous data and voice which will supposedly be remedied this year with the deployment of SVDO.

The same people will decide if they want WebOS still because the UI will still be ridiculously different and the multi-tasking will almost for sure be better. As you can see just by glancing on any tech review site the multi-tasking on the Pre blows Android out of the water which is arguably it's closest competitor in that way. I am highly doubtful that Apple will get it's multi-tasking on par with Palm's. Palm has it's job cut out for it I agree but im sure they can figure out how to make their multi-tasking much better.

Notice it doesn't say if its TRUE multi-tasking or not. I would guess it's likely a more advanced notification system rather than true multi-task like the Pre has. True multi-tasking has been something that Apple has been adamantly opposed to for awhile now, as it can compromise the speed and continuity of the OS with overconsumption of resources. Just my 2 cents.

The single reason why I won't even come close to owning an iphone until it's on a carrier that doesn't suck complete balls. If the 4g indeed goes to Verizon this year then maybe that will change but until then I know MANY MANY people who would buy an iphone if it wasn't on AT&T.

this really has no effect on me at all. My ipod is already jailbroken and running proswitcher so it works just like the pre. Im pretty sure if apple implements multitasking it will be locked down and limited some way or another...this is apple we're talking about here. So them officially supporting multitasking doesn't excite me one bit. Im willing to bet its not even as good as proswitcher even in beta

even if its not as good as webOS, i doubt people will know. ive had the phone since launch and people still ask me almost daily what kind of phone i have. nobody knows anything about the pre, and now that the iphone will have multitasking it will probably just boost its sales.

if the iPhone has great multi-tasking, and is on more carriers, i will have more options next time i upgrade!

    go go competition!

even if it does a decent job at multi-tasking, all it really needs is a physical keyboard and ill be sold.

i think anybody who got handson will know that the multitasking on the Pre is miles ahead of other so called multitasking on android, wm, bb, or upcoming iPhone.

now palm just need to make an ads to show that.

It amazes me how everyone thinks that just because iPhone may come out with this feature, that suddenly no other phone company has a chance. Just because one car manufacturer comes out with a killer car - it doesn't mean everyone wants one. Not everyone likes the look/feel of the iPhone. Not everyone likes Apple themselves. Not everyone likes using the iStore. Not everyone wants what all the other drones want. There is plenty of room in the market for competition, and I'm pretty sure the guys at Elevation Partners knew that they had features that would be copied if it took off. It won't be a killer. Palm has a better form factor and a much better OS design (IMHO). You can slap wings on a dog and call it a butterfly... you know where that analogy is going.

I'm excited to see what Apple has up their sleeves. I was disappointed by Palm at CES. I just switched over from an iPhone too, I'm kinda hoping that the iPhone doesn't tempt me back to AT&T again.

Worry No. Multitasking on WebOS is as good as it gets on any mobile plaform. I can't see Apple besting palm in this area. If anything, I see palm having ground for a lawsuit against Apple.

im glad about this if its even true it will force palm to improve webos so its a win for us
