I absolutely can't believe that I am now using my 4th brand new Palm Pre. The first one wouldn't landscape and dropped every call. The 2nd one would not turn on consistently, and the 3rd one would shut off completely when accessing my voice mail and/or when making a phone call. I have spent at least 50 plus hours with tech support at Sprint and Palm. Sprint sent me an airave and that made my reception worse and "scrambled" my voice mail on my Pre and on my Samsung. I have done several "total erases" on the 1st three Pre's. I feel like I've been through a battle. Even airave engineers have called me. By the way, I live in a very densely populated area of southern California, so should have good reception. Bottom line: now that I have had so many debacles, do I cut my losses, bite the bitter bullet and buy the I-Phone?? Please, HELP...

Thanks for asking Turbo... It's better; however, it continues to drop calls in my house. I guess that there is not a fix for that. Had it on the Touchstone charger yesterday and suddenly there was a weird alert icon on the screen. The battery should have been fully charged, instead it suddenly drained out. Luckily, I had a spare battery and had to install that one. Haven't gotten a chance to recheck the battery with the problem. I think I have recently developed bad cell phone karma. Can't figure out what to do...

    Hi Jane,

I have to be honest with you...I walked into an Apple store last evening, played with the iPhone for a while, and SO badly wanted to walk out with one for me and my son. AWEsome device. I "like" my Pre, I'm just not in love. And there was A LOT to love about the iPhone. The ONLY things keeping me from jumping from the mother ship (Sprint) are: 1) I have four phones on a family plan, and Sprint is WAY cheaper (by around $50 per month (comparing apples to apples (pun intended). ) 2) I am a very loyal Sprint customer and they have treated me great over 10 years. 3) Look and feel of the Pre...LOVE it.

Now...to be fair...there are things not to like about the fruit too. No removable battery. iTunes only, along with other "Apple only" stuff. Fragile, for sure, with NO option for insurance through AT&T. No picture mail. No "multi-tasking" capabilities, like the Pre.

A dear friend of mine, with similar opinions as me, says to wait it out and the Pre software improvements will come. Four software realeases later and not too many improvements to get jazzed about, the iPhone has gotten my attention. Good luck...David

dude just quit- if you've had 4 phones and they aren't working, something is amiss. Sprint probably would like you to switch to AT&T since I'm sure they have spent several hundreds/thousands of dollars trying to troubleshoot it. My wife and I each got our phones and they work perfectly. I'm not saying this is the case for you, but in some cases of people that have gone through 5 phones I begin to think the problem isn't so much with the phone as with the person.

Make sure you have roaming enabled in your phone settings. That might fix your lack of reception.

I take issue with this statement. Although I love the Pre and Palm. I have been through 4 Pre's. All three had dead/stuck pixels. All 3 approved for exchange by sprints technical support. At least in my case, the phones were clearly defective.

PM me your questions, If I cant find an answer, I'll show you who can.

He clearly said some cases and he' s right, there are people that are just screw-ups or severely technically challenged. If there weren't any, or very few, I'd be out of a job.

Your case is a little surprising though. 3 phones with dead pixels? Makes we wonder if it wasn't just a bad batch or they got slightly smushed in shipping. Quick question, did they develop these after a while or were they messed up right out of the box?

So it sounds like you have a reception problem in your area(which would explain most of your complaints) and the phones probably weren't defective after all. Maybe you should be angry at the carrier(s), not the phone itself.

No landscape is either a phone issue or a false expectation. The phone shutting off trying to make calls & hear voicemail messages is not a carrier issue. Although it sounds like Jane's in a bad reception area, besides everything else.

Jane, some of what you describe sounds like phone issues & some sounds like reception problems. I live in Baltimore City, also highly populated, but my home is on the wrong side of a hill from the local tower, with several streets of brick duplexes directly between my house & the tower. Finding a phone with good reception there has been an adventure.

If you buy the iPhone, two things come into play. You buy a new phone & you change carriers. Do you really want to do both? And what do you want in a phone? In my case a GSM Treo Pro turned out to be almost perfect, including getting mostly solid reception in my home, when my neighbors still have spotty reception & my previous phones didn't cut it.

I had a 4th pre too then just got a 32 iphone 3gs but ended up coming back to the pre after 6 days.. The iphone is really cool but it feels more like a toy so im just gonna buy an ipod and use mytether with my pre....also I have no signal in my house either so sprint sent me an airave and it works great always full on bars... maybe if iphone had a real keyboard and did at least 3 true multitasks with their apps it would be perfect also screw att and their rip off service

I don't know about the bad batch thing though. My first 2 Pre came from Worst Buy and my 3rd directly from Palm and they all had pixel problems as well as build issues. I actually left Sprint last week due to reception issues in and around my home (where I work) and went to T-mobile for the My Touch 3G. Android is pretty nice but after Web OS....Let's just say I have a Pre on the way from Sprint, Hopefully the newer build dates are better than the first ones. I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT THE PRE!!!!!!!

The phone shutting down is well known an is probably just a loose battery. Palm released a new battery to take care of that issue. As for the no landscape, that sounds like user error.

I understand your addiction. As much as I loved my Iphone 3g for the first couple months, I started to get sick of it after a while. Then I had problems with phone itself which didn't help. When I first saw the Pre, I knew my iphone days were numbered. There is something about this phone that's hard to walk away from, even with its quirks.

Just got my Airave today. Fantastic device. Full bars even in my downstairs computer room. None before. No more dropped calls. Now I really love my Pre!
Best part is that Sprint gave it to me and waived all the purchase and monthly fee's! nice.

Im currently fighting with Sprint to get an Airave. Tech support identified my house as being in a "coverage hole" even though the Sprint web site says that Im in the best coverage. Im waiting for a supervisor to call me back, because they dont want to give it to me for free. How did you get your free Airave, darkstarx??

Hi David: Thanks for your reply and your understanding. I too have been a loyal Sprint customer for years. I have had a variety of Sprint phones and they have all worked well in my house and that's part of my frustration. I also don't want to pay AT&T rates and I've never been an AT&T fan. I think that I will try to be patient for a while and see if I can get the Pre to function better. I really do like many of its features and I do understand that a new OS can be quirky. Good luck to you...

Sprint has consistently given incentives to me so that I won't switch to AT&T. They are as flummoxed as I am and they appear to be very committed to resolving this issue. If the troubleshooting expenses are bothering them, they have certainly given NO indication of that. Glad that your phones are working for you. Thanks DUDE...
