    Ok:

Handspring drops their tech support. Vphone is out of the picture. Edge continues to have problems. And so on.

Sony's screwing 710 owners on the OS upgrade.

Palm has USB static problem with their M505.

Neither Palm nor Handspring can seem to get a new wireless device out the door.

...sheesh. Maybe I should just get a Handera!

LOL! Well...not really, I have a 710+. Most everyone that has a 710 is a power user, and most all of those power users now about the warez upgrade to OS 4.1. So...yea, they kinda are screwing their 710 users, though most of them have upgraded already. Although a few honest people might purchase the upgrade...hehe...

HandSpring: While I do not like the fact that they now charge for support, I can understand their motive from a business point of view. Of course, I never used their support anyway.

Sony: Again, if I had purchased the 710, I would be plenty upset that I had to pay for an upgrade that is nothing more than flashing ROM. Paying for it would not irritate me nearly as much as having to send in my CLIE and sit around waiting for it to return. I do understand this as well, from a business perspective.

Palm: The idea that static electricity can build up in a PDA and cause problems really concerns me. Who knows what it might do to the PC. The fact that they will not admit to it bothers me more.

HandERA: Quite possibly the most advanced PalmOS device on the market. Unfortunately, they totally forgot about style. But, if you look at it from a business perspective, they are after a very specific demographic. I guess they figure style is not a key selling feature.

What it all comes down to, is the companies are acting just like companies. They can do these things because the consumer rolls over and takes it. I know I do most of the time. I am far more inclined to take a problem back to the retailer than to the manufacturer, because I can get instant results. Manufacturers know this. Consumers will continue to buy regardless. Look how many FordExplorers continue to be sold.

Quality Control will continue to suffer, only because it is cheaper to mass produce products and sell a certain percentage of them defective, than to maintain a higher level of QC. They get away with this because consumers simply return the product and exchange it for another one, in the hopes this one works.

The saddest part is the fact that retailers use this to increase profits by selling ExtendedWarranties. We have become so prone to electronic device failure that we pay in advance to have them replaced, or at least I do.

Handspring: I would have no problem with their charging policy if their track record regarding QC wasn't deplorable. Hell, Palm has (and has had) the very same policy since June or July or somewhere-around-there. We'll see how well my m500 holds up, but I'm willing to bet it's a hell of a lot better than the 6+ edge's I went through.

Sony: I think it's a rather odd policy, personally. That wasn't the impression I got when they addressed the limited color capabilities of the 710 when they released the 610, but what do I know?

Palm: can you link for me, dietrichbohn? I did find an interesting link for possible QC on the m500.

I'm of the considered opinion that it's the sales numbers that matter - not customer satisfaction as much. Same goes for fast food.

    I agree with "GSR13GSFOUE52HSDIUDO89"

As a FIRM I would charge for tech-support, charge for an upgrade, and Make $$$$$$$$$

As for the ****-ugly-ness of the handera. Well it works for techie people, **** for the JOE CONSUMER, the need style.
I would get the Prism, **** its an eyesore. That is why I have an Edge. My edge is shinny and oh so pretty.

I also agree with the fact MFG.'s know they make sub-standard products, knowing retailers sell warranties. I paid $50 for my warranty on my VDX. 4 VDX's and now I have an Edge. (second one). I have not spent any money on upgrading or replacing.

Retailers sell their warranties in hopes that person will only try to use it one month after it expires. (and then its void and have to pay full price for a new one).

Well I got my money worth and more from BestBuy.

TAKE THAT BLUE POLO SHIRT PEOPLE!!!!!

Well folks you can have your cake and eat it too. If you want cheap PDAs then you are going to have to put up with quality issues. Quality come at a high price in the real world.

Well, PIC has a secret letter supposedly from a tech help rep at Palm. The explanation of static burning out the USB controller makes sense to me. I guess be sure you're grounding yourself properly.

Exactly what part of $450.00 is cheap? That is what I paid for my Prism, and QC obviously did a poor job looking it over or I would not have had to return it. Got another one, and it too had some problems, though minor. Finally ended up a with a third and the only problem it had was the UP button did not always work.

Now I have a CLIE, a device that costs $499.99. How much should consumers have to pay to get good CustomerService and free upgrades.

Even if they did charge a higher price for better QC, the manufacturing would not improve, they would just do a better job rejecting the substandard units. In my opinion, this is something they should be doing anyway, no matter what we pay.
