It seems to me that she complains about AT&T service and not the iPhone itself.

She also complains about how locked down it is hence, why it can cure cancer but it wont allow it.

    * Stuck patches? Partial erase worked for me.
    * Stuck virtual keyboard? Partial erase AND folder deletion worked for me.

That is the main complaint. The iPhone is pretty good, but it's tied to AT&T, so...the iPhone, as a phone and web device, sucks.

Yes, pretty good. I have a feeling that if the Pre rolls out in pretty good shape - more good reviews than bad, there could be a lot of defectors.

You know, most gadget lovers like the newest and greatest thing. The iphone is old news, nothing spectacular. It's not thinner, not lighter, no physical keyboard, different look, nothing. If they were to spruce up the physical aspects of it, I think there wouldn't be defectors. But, if I had an iphone, I would switch, because the Pre is "new".

That's interesting. And probably very true. It's just not how I roll.

I become interested in phones that are the new hotness, but I don't just buy them for that reason. I've got certain needs, desires, and expectations that I use to size up the device. I embrace it or reject it on that basis.

It was refreshing when an associate told me about his interest in the iPhone a year or so, ago, then quickly revealed that it wasn't about features. It was about the cool factor and prestige of having this item-of-envy.

I want my stuff to look cool, too, but I'll take an ugly, old phone that's productive and/or entertaining over the pretty, young thing that just shines. Maybe that's why I'm happy using my 755p, still. (Not that I think it's ugly.)

Well, there's also the fact that its not just a smartphone you buy, but apps & accessories too. If i switch to the Pre (from the iphone), then all those go to waste. Or i'll feel compelled to get a iPod Touch. But not only that, i'll have to buy similar apps for the Pre.

So just because its a new phone isn't enough. You're buying into a new platform.

I'm definitely trying out a Pre because I much prefer Sprint and was a long time Palm user. But i definitely can't say i'm all in til i know all the details. There's much we haven't seen.

Very, very true. It is a platform investment.

I'm not prepared to dive into the Pre until I know I can at least approximate my Kinoma experiences (755p). Classic helps, but only so much.

For someone with a bunch of iPhone apps, Classic is irrelevant, I suppose. I'm hoping that I'm right about many of those apps being unnecessary - not just frivolous (farting, etc) but like a Bizarro version of the pc/Mac comparison.

People say Macs come with applications that pc owners have to search out, then settle for weak approximations of... them... or something.

Well, it looks like Apple's the one having people buy apps for things their smartphones ought to already be able to do. That's also been true of some/most Treos, but I'm hoping it won't be as necessary with the Pre.
