All carriers versions, third party software, etc. aside, when it come down to Windows Mobile Pro or Standard which is more predisposed to instability and problems?

    Thanks!

I have found WM/Pro 6.1 on the Touch to be very, very stable... soft resets a month apart or more (I do not reboot/reset/restart every night, but keep running... so that's 1 month of run time on average. I'd estimate about 4X more stable than WM/Pro 6.0 on the same device). It approaches the stability of PalmOS 4.X (soft resets around 3 months apart).

I haven't tried WM/Std 6.1, but WM/Std 6.0 is pretty good too. So overall I have no reason to believe that WM/Pro and WM/Std differ significantly in stability. Too many variables (hardware, memory, 3rd party software, configurations), to judge accurately. But in sum, I would say that 1) both WM/Pro and WM/Std CAN BE very stable and the old notions that WM is inherently unstable is no longer valid IMHO, 2) both can still get a little laggy at times, but 6.1 seems to be considerably better (less laggy), 3) you definitely want at least 128MB of memory.

I had really good stability with my Q9c (Standard) with a few very minor exceptions, but I am not having good luck with my 700wx (WM5). About the same level of problems I had with my 6700 (WM5) and my i730 (WM5). So is the difference improvements in WM5 --> WM6? My 700wx didn't ever respond well to SPB Products. Well this could be a number of issues I was interested to see why my Q9c was so stable and my 700wx/6700/i730 were not. I though "It's Pro vs. Standard" when maybe the link is WM5 vs. WM6.

    Thoughts anyone?

I believe it is WM5 vs WM6... with WM6.1 being even better than WM6. Certainly WM5 on the Dash was also less stable than WM5 on the Dash... Both Pro and Standard use the same underlying WinCE kernel.

At what point do the Kernels differ? Where does the change come in.

I guess I should start looking for a custom ROM for my 700wx for 6.1. Maybe that would solve a few problems I have had with all the WM5 devices I have owned. Perhaps WM isn't the problem-prone OS I have thought it was, just its old versions.

Standard is designed for devices that do not have a touchscreen. Thus it is useful only if you want a more basic device and have no intention of editing documents.

I'll have to dig out my Motorola Q9h but if memory serves me correctly, you can edit documents with it. Can cut and paste too.

Standard manages memory better than Pro, adding a level of stability that Pro doesn't have. It also adds to the performance of the Standard devices (hence the reason the Q9h appears faster than the Pro).

    You are right.

I retired my 700wx for a Q9c (sprint) last month... I can do everything with the Q9c that I could with the 700wx... I've not seen on single difference.... touchscreen is not a big deal.

I've found the stability of the Q9c to be the same as my 700wx... my 700 never gave me any problems... I replaced it to move on to something smaller.
