I believe you are correct, the only difference is in the 3G frequencies. The base GSM and EDGE frequencies are supported in US and Europe so phone calls and texting (even slow internet) should work fine with a European GSM SIM card.

Well according to Nokia's main site:
    http://www.nokiausa.com/A41146207

    The phone is:
Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, WCDMA 850/1900 MHz, HSDPA

And according to this site UK frequencies used are:
    GSM 900 and GSM 1800

So you should be good to go for TXT and Phone!

Nice, glad to see you are enjoying it D-Daf.

US version will work in Europe just fine, just no 3G over there.

I had the E71 for a couple of weeks.
    Pros: Great build quailty
Has pretty much everything you could want with regards to Hardware
Battery life is astounding! to say the least
Cons: I just couldn't take the antiquated OS
The calendar.. and Contacts do not work at all together.
and no ability to categorize contacts or calendar!
Lets say an Email comes in.. with a phone Number.. I couldn't dial from the email app by highlighting the number..
The fonts are weak to say the least..
My dpad light would NOT go off.. I turned it off in settings.. it still had a mind of it's own.
My email wouldn't load more than the title by default.. no matter what I chose in settings for KB to load.. , if I select an NEW email that comes in, I'd have to wait another few seconds to load the email so I could read it.
The voice command works, but only for one number for the contact which was assigned as the default number.
    I sold mine...
If the OS on that phone ever exceeds the build quality.. well.. I'll come back to it.. otherwise.. it's just doesn't do the things I want it to do.
