Hmm...the clie or the Handera? The choices are getting better!
Hey I'm in the same boat!!! I think maybe one of each will do...I might add an m505 into that collection for the 16 bit color!!!

The Clie is a better value because it has a 320*320 screen AND an MP3 player built in which I WANT!!!

I was going to put out $180 for a Samsung Yepp but then I decided to wait for the Clie because it has the MP3 capability build in heheheheh.

Regarding a headphone jack, none of the Palmstation pictures show the SIDES of the unit very well... There is one picture of the Handera in its cradle, and it does appear to have some kind of jack on the left-hand side. I don't see any "MP3 player" apps in the launcher, and I wonder if the Dragonball VZ has enough juice for that. (Doesn't the Clie have a separate DSP for that?)

Still I love that big screen and color isn't that important to me.

Any bets on pricing? $400 seems to be the current going price for grayscale units...

anybody else confused about including both sd and cf? For people hedging their bets as to which one will become universal? Seems like the space would have been better used slimming down the thing...

Yuck! That thing is **** ugly. I was hoping Handera would design a totally new chassis. Instead they just modified the old Palm III shell.

I like the soft graffiti input and high res screen though!

I was thinking hte same thing!!! They should have teamed up with sony...told them to ditch the Mem. Stick and add SD/CF and to add the soft screen!!!

Why can't these guys get it right!!!

    Nooooooo!!!
Ok, the new HandEra has cool features. SD and Compact Flash slot - fine.
But did anyone think about the programmers? Do they have to choose between 160x160, 320x320 or 240x320 (with optional graffiti area) or what? Anyway, how should this device emulate standard 160x160 software? Mathematically impossible.

I'm worrying about the "screen chaos". It's a good idea from Handheld developers to improve the Palm Platform. But PLEASE not that way.
Like mentioned in another tread: Dear Handheld developers, PLEASE do not invent any own creations (like the HandEra screen now) but do such things together. The Clie 2's screen is good enough. Take this one.

Otherwise we will have the same chaos like the PPCs. Different devices and software that runs only on one specific device.

I don't think that there is any definates on the screen, execpt that the grafiti area is soft...

ZDNET and Cnet are running an interesting article on the new Handera device:

Hmmm. I'm not wild about the design, but it's an attractive product, aesthetics aside. My first thought when seeing the virtual Graffiti area was, "What apps will currently support it when it's out of the way?" But the spreadsheet and Doc viewer in landscape mode look fantastic.

Here is a story on Palm Infocenter that should answer some questions. There are also links to other stories.

For me, it looks really good. Personally, the only thing I use my Spring Board for is memory. I'm really not interested in MP3 or anything else. Maybe someday, for wireless, but not until the infrastructure is there. But I want memory and the combo of CF & SD on the same unit is superb. Especially since it would support the Microdrive. Also, the larger screen, higher res, soft Grafitti area are all tops. Add the jog dial and other features, and this is a great package. Plus factory capability of interchanging rechargeables with alkaline batteries is excellent. I'm glad that I'm a Sam's Club member...

All of your posts just prove the point. It is impossible to be all things to all people. Hell, when you put all the options each of you want, you end up with a laptop or at least a device that costs as much as one ...

You know, I thought that the whole point of increase resolution and screen size was to allow better graphics and easier readability. The HandEra has a larger screen and better resolution, but they forgot about the color!!

IMHO, a monochrome screen is horrible for reading text for a extended periods of time. A color screen's black-on-white text will be easier of the eyes. However, current color screens (excluding the Clie 2) are only 160x1160, at that resolution, the grid-lines are too distracting for text reading.

It appears that HandEra was heading in the right direction, but stopped way short a perfect handheld. It's like they have all the ingredients to bake a cake, but forgot about the water!!

Maybe they'll have a color model in the future, but from their infrequent improvements to their devices (the TRGpro is 2 years old without improvement) I don't think that's likely.

Perhaps instead of HandEra, it should be called HandError!!

The Clie is still the one to beat in my opinion. 320x320 color resolution, 8mb memory and 7 mb flash ROM (Japanese version), multimedia capablilities....still hard to beat!!!

    Come Handspring....where's the Visor X (twist/snap/whatever)

At $350 with the improvement, this will give the m500 some stiff competition especially with the power (memory hungry) users. Although, the HandEra's pretty ugly and bigger.

Is it me or does the Edge looked better and better with the introduction of the new handhelds.

So in the high-end monochrome arena, we now have the m500, the Edge and the HandEra. I vote for the Edge... it has a sleek form-factor and expaniblity options.

If I owned a Palm III series PDA, and was looking to upgrade to a new monochrome, I'd get the new HandEra 330 over the Palm M500 and HS Edge. Sure, the Palm and Edge are sleek and pretty, but the HandEra would be cheaper in the long run. From the specs I've seen, it's the same size, so new cases would not have to be bought. I think the connectors are also the same as before, so old accessories should also work. I would have to consider not just the cost of a new PDA, but the cost of everything else to go along with it. (Plus, those accessories are already available NOW.)

A German Palm site (www.palmtopmagazin.de) says the 330 is powered by 4 batteries. No rechargeable battery - that's not good.

Another thing: Palminfocenter says 160x160 application can be run in a "window"

Imagine: a 160x160 window on a 240x320 device. This window would be quite small, wouldn't it?

    From PDABuzz:
Update: Now since the cat is out of the bag, I've gotten the official word from HandEra about this device. Here are the specs:
    • Official Name: HandEra 330
    • 33MHz Dragonball VZ Processor
    • 2MB FlashROM
    • 8MB RAM
    • 240 x 320 x 16 greyscale display
    • 4.7" x 3.2" x 0.7"
    • 5.9oz
    • SD and CF slots
    • Voice Recorder
    • Side mounted "jog wheel"
    • Powered by 4 AAA's for "twice" the battery life. Li-Ion battery pack also available
    • Virtual Graffiti area
    • PalmOS 3.5
    • MSRP: $349.99
    • Available Q2

The option to use either a rechargeable battery or regular alkaline batteries is a feature I wish my Prism had. There have been times when I stopped reading or something because I wanted to save the battery juice - just in case I would need it before charging at home or work. At times like that, I really miss my Deluxe. I guess I'll have to get one of those Emergency Chargers...

I thought that the reason that manufactures use rechargable Li-ion batteries was that they hold onto more power and last longer than reg. AAA's. So wouldn't 4 AAA's last the same amount of time as a sigle Li-ion charged?
