    I'm faced with a dilemma...

I think most of us know about the current happenings in the PDA community. A new crop of PDA's are coming out or have already came out...the Edge from Handspring, the m500 and m505 from Palm, and the PEG-N700C from Sony. Rumors are flying about the new HandEra device, the new m700 (check out palmstation), and maybe a new Handspring Visor_?_ hopefully . My dilemma is not which to get now (pretty much will be the Sony or maybe what Handspring's answer to the m505), but...

We are also aware that newer palm devices are being developed with availability maybe new year with a brand new processor, the ARM, which would revolutionize the Palm OS platform enabling it to do stuff that current devices can't.

So my dilemma : succumb to gadget-lust and get one of these new PDA this year OR have patience and wait another year for the ARM-processor pda's to come out?

The question is - what (if anything) are you using now?

Get now. Get later. Thank God for Ebay.

I'd only wait for the release of the m5x series. The quality of the 505's color screen has been thrown into doubt, so I want to see the screen firsthand.

I'm not interested in the HandEra device, since several CF springboard adaptors are currently on the market. The springboard slot may create an upper limit on miniaturization, but at least you can create springboard adaptors for other expansion cards (MMC, SD, Memory Stick, etc.).

Sony may release the new color Clié in the US, but I'm willing to bet that it'll be later than sooner. And I have reservations about the Memory Stick's content protection for media. Also, the size limits of the MS (and SD cards) make me skeptical about how many hardware expansion options will be availabe, given the delay in Springboard releases during the first year; it can only be worse with the Memory Stick.

My understanding of Palm's plans for ARM is that the Dragonball is underpowered for cell phone technology, and the company's migration has more to do with attracting and appeasing licensees like Nokia, and less to do with multimedia or PC-like functionality. Palm's own dismissal of MP3 integration seems to bear this out. I haven't read anywhere that PalmOS 5 is going to be a multitasking kernel, so I don't think we're going to suddenly see the PalmOS morph into "the good WinCE." At any rate, I wouldn't base any of my near-term purchasing decisions on the future of ARM. Personally, I'm either upgrading to a Prism or an m505.

Color is terrific. Get something now I don't think you'll regret it. I just bought a used Prism (thanks Handsprung) and couldn't be happier. Gadget lust is too strong , when I bought my VDx I convinced myself that I'd keep it for at least two, hopefully three years and one year later here I am with a Prism.

    Now back to my vacation...

Waiting for technology is pointless. There will ALWAYS be something bigger, better, brighter, the week after you buy your gadget.

    Always.

So, don't loose sleep over it. When you need it, that's when you get it.

The key is "need" vs. "want" .

Personally if I already had a Vpl, I wouldn't consider getting the VE. I'd wait to check out one of the new color machines, or possibly the rumored wireless m700. Now there's enough gadgetry for you! If SD peripherals ever get going, then you'll have a whole new dimension of lusting available. And if you want something really different (i.e., you're a beta-testing kind of gadget freak), you can check out that Agenda Linux-based PDA.

But **** richardson is right, any decision you make isn't completely binding. There's always eBay, and if you're a good salesman you can pawn stuff off to co-workers, friends, and family.

This is how I got my Prism.. not that there was anything wrong with my Blue VDX, I just came down with a bad case of Prism envy.. Only one way to cure it..
